To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

So if men started watching videos of women jumping off cliffs, does that mean we should all go and jump off a cliff to please them?

Women who do things because a man tells them to are idiots. If you look around you most women do not have these procedures done. The women with sense, at least.

I don’t believe it’s down to men. It’s down to certain vain women wanting to look like a Kim Kardashian clone.

No. You are preaching to the choir really, since I have never even had Botox and never, ever will. But I don't believe it's as black and white as you think it is, and nor is it as simple as "Women who do things because a man tells them to are idiots."

There are reasons why this kind of look is catching on. Just like there is a reason why so many women are having Botox, including on MN. Women need to look a certain way to keep their jobs, their status, their positions. Men, on the other hand, can mostly be unashamedly wrinkly. Like Nicole Kidman vs Hugh Grant.

Their choice.

We aren’t all copycats thank goodness. Some of us can think for ourselves.

At least, we think we can.

In reality we are so steeped in our own culture that many of us aspire to look like other people.

LocalHobo · 26/09/2024 18:26

It's a tragic, needless waste, and I hope something is done to prevent it happening to other women We can't legislate for idiots. We need to raise DD's who are confident in themselves. Some adult females set dreadful examples to their developing teens.
Who cares if you look cross? That is your face, don't feel pressure to change it.

Women need to look a certain way to keep their jobs, their status, their positions. Sue Grey is doing ok.

Ive had a big bum all my life and i loathe it....I spend my life trying to hide it...why on earth anyone would want this procedure is beyond me.

And mine is flat and I hate it. I wish I had a naturally big one. It’s funny how some of us want what others have.

Sure - but men don’t seem to be dying from BBLs in the same way. Why’s that?

duh, cos maybe they haven't had it done !!!

Do you shave? There's no reason for it, it's societal pressure.

I don't shave, i don't dye my hair, i don't wear make up or have my nails done. I wear what i want, i buy whatever shoes and handbags i like. Societal pressure is not a court order, you can just ignore the SM, magazines etc. It's called having your own mind.

Mine fell off after a period of ill health and inactivity. Never thought I’d miss it 🤣

So is Mary Beard. She had to defend her natural state though.
One can always find exceptions.

But even on super intellectual super feminist MN, I never see threads saying " I really admire Mary Beard". What I see mostly are threads saying " I really admire Abby Clancey or Kate Middleton". It wasn't always this way.

I wonder whether you will feel the same when it’s your chin that’s hairy. I held out for ages, but am now shaving weekly as the facial hair is somewhat embarrassing.

UtterlyOtterly · 26/09/2024 18:33

It is so sad women feel the need to modify their bodies. There are many things "wrong" with mine, including a small flat bum, but who cares? I'm healthy and alive, that is all that actually matters.

It hasn't seemed to affect my long happy marriage, my friendships or my career 🤷

Maybe i will shave, maybe i won't. Why do you shave ? Is it because you don't like the hairs or is is because a man may let his gaze fall upon you or because a magazine told you too? I hope it is because you don't like them.

EI12 · 26/09/2024 18:35

Don't. It is in poor taste to start a discussion like that now.

I was thinking the same thing.

Good grief. Why on earth would she go to him?!

ukgone2pot · 26/09/2024 18:39

SensibleSigma · 26/09/2024 18:24

Or she could have accepted that her booty was normal for her.

Believe me, I had a massive arse and thick thighs before they were fashionable. That was normal for me and I wish it had been acceptable back then, in the same way I wish all body types were acceptable now.

It was probably absolutely fine. Nevertheless, it was clearly an insecurity of hers and she could have changed it without putting her life at severe risk. That's the beauty of some exercises, you can change your body if you want to, but people want quick fixes unfortunately.

@user47 who on earth would trust anyone who looks like that to work on them?! He’s a mess.

Saw photos of his ‘studio’ too - a typical home set up with a a battered sign on the back gate.

The woman who died looks like she’s changed her facial appearance a lot in the last couple of years since she started working in aesthetics - a very dangerous slippery slope

I’ve seen 16 year old with lip fillers - they look awful but think they look amazing 😩

I have Botox between my eyebrows (11s) twice a year. it stops me looking really angry when I'm not. It is completely safe and is in no way comparable to a BBL!

Botox is not completely safe, there is still a risk.

Unfortunately we live in a society infused with societal pressure. We're socialised to behave in a certain way according to sex, we buy clothes that are available due to fashion, we copy looks that we see around us, we shave because it's the norm.

I find it difficult to believe that you don't conform in anyway to British culture.

It beggers belief

As the story unfolds I imagine info will come out about him influencing her over a long period of time and essentially grooming her into more and more expensive procedures.
