To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

I just dont see the appeal of this kind of wanky tv.

You clearly don't work in TV advertising ...

No, thank goodness.

The advertising comes because there's an audience.

Why is there an audience for Love Island?

Oh god I’ve just read the daily mail
link I posted as it’s been updated and it showed her before she started messing with her face. She was a VERY pretty woman. What on earth is going on where already very attractive women are using fillers and Botox to ‘enhance’ their faces and basically running their looks in the process?

It has to be body dysmorphia surely? Too much scrutinising of perceived flaws.

She was a natural beauty. I guess once you train in aesthetics you practice what you preach and become an advert for it.

Why are these women looking at this stuff? Why do they get these apps, watch this shit telly, not put their phones down? What are they getting from these apps etc that undoubtedly make them feel inadequate and shit about themselves, that makes having them worthwhile? What hole do these apps fill? Is it boredom?

I watched an interview with Lauren Goodyear recently from TOWIE and she said all the girls were given the tweekments for free and she is trying to undo the whole lot right now. She said you end up getting a very distorted view of what’s normal because of social media and the scrutiny that comes from the press/paparazi.

It is not de rigeur for men to shave legs and pits

Most of them shave their faces surely?

Some sportsman shave/wax their legs?

It's not de rigeur for women to shave legs and pits for that matter? In fact some probably don a winter coat??

It is absolutely tragic, and says a lot about our society and the expectations on women to endure pain and to butcher themselves in order to conform to a norm. However, I do think that the title of your thread is insensitive to the individuals involved- she didn't simply "want a bigger arse", she was a victim of societal pressure, and your wording sounds like victim blaming to me.
It's all incredibly sad for all involved.

I think this is going too far. A massive bum isn’t the societal norm, it was still a choice and she wasn’t pressured. Although no one can disagree that there are societal pressures on women, no one is under such intense pressure (at least not from society) that they would voluntarily put themselves through an incredibly dangerous procedure. Most people with sense realise that life is more valuable than looks.

I dont get this either. I've only seen 20 mins of love island and it was the biggest pile of vacuous shit I've ever seen. I am not saying everything we watch has to be noble or intellectual by any means but I just dont see the appeal of this kind of wanky tv.

But it was the same with women's magazines. I could never understand why women read them. I saw one once which had pictures of Victoria Beckham with circles around her cellulite. They were always about shaming.

Why anyone would have something injected into themselves by someone who is not medically trained in that particular area is beyond me. The law needs to change.

Totally agree

I see Studio 23 in Gloucester has now shut all its social media down, but having found images of those running it I'd have thought their own "enhancements" would be enough to put clients off Confused

If these procedures were illegal, then a lot of people would think twice.

The history of abortion suggestions otherwise.

Getting an abortion and getting a bigger backside are two different things.

Someone's entire life doesn't change if they don't get a larger backside.

I wonder how much filler needs to be injected into a bum to make it noticeably bigger.

It’s not filler, it’s fat from other parts of the body.

Runnerinthenight · 26/09/2024 16:31

newyorkhotel · 26/09/2024 15:39

Her husband should have maybe talked her out of it? or tried?

I've had a nose job and my husband told me I didnt need it. I did it anyway. I did it for me because my nose was all wonky from being broken as a kid.

Many of my friends get fillers and would hit the roof if their partners told them not to. Their response would be: "my body, my money, my choice". Regardless of the rights/wrongs of the cosmetic industry, if someone is very determined to do something, they will do it. You cant blame their family for it (unless of course they were the ones who pressured them into doing it in the first place obv but largely, people do this because they want to).

Your nose job was entirely different to this situation. I would have done the same probably in your shoes. I'd never have considered a BBL.

nosmartphone · 26/09/2024 16:32

Not angry for her - angry at her.

Stupid is as stupid does unfortunately. Incredibly selfish to even consider it. Surgery is dangerous. Injecting yourself with chemicals just as dangerous.

If one person who might have been considering doing it and reads this thread and thinks, actually not a good idea, then at least something good will have come from it.

Inslopia · 26/09/2024 16:32

Alcohol, smoking and junk foods represent a greater risk to society than this though

Has anyone said they didn’t?

Runnerinthenight · 26/09/2024 16:33

ginasevern · 26/09/2024 15:50

Fuck sake, anyone that thinks shaving your armpits is equivalent to pumping your body full of chemicals or going under the knife needs to grow up.

Every single medical procedure comes with risk and everyone with half a brain knows it. Every mother I've ever known who's had to have surgery prays to god they wake up afterwards. Not for themselves but for their kids.

As for societal pressure - I figure there's a pretty good mix of women on this site. How many of you feel pressured to have a Brazilian bum lift? Do you feel your husband will leave you if you don't? Do you feel your friends will judge you or that you'll be ridiculed in the supermarket or your favourite restaurant without looking like Kim Kardashian? I don't know one single woman who feels that way.

Neither do I gina - I've two cats snuggled up beside me and honestly they've more sense than some of the posters on this thread!

Inslopia · 26/09/2024 16:33

I don’t really understand some of the comments on this thread.

“maybe it’s not the best idea to inject stuff into your bum”

”but alcohol can kill you”.

🤔

Natural, but enhanced by the procedures she practiced. I’m surprised that someone so versed in aesthetics wanted to get it done, given the well publicised risks and unfortunate deaths associated with it.

YesterdaysFuture · 26/09/2024 16:35

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 16:25

@YesterdaysFuture but when done properly they're a lot safer, same as a lot of things - people choose the cheaper price point and sometimes have to deal with the consequences

Yes, and I believe regulation is required.

I don't think it is regulated and people have been talking about it for years.

If you go to someone not regulated then you know it is a lot riskier.

Lafondah · 26/09/2024 16:35

I guess you can get obsessed - look at Katie Price or Bobby Norris who take it to the extreme.

Interesting point PP made saying "celebs" get tweaks for free. Its like all industries, create a need and people will flock. And its so easy to advertise these days with SM pumped into everyones hands every hour of every day.

Love Island isnt the problem per se. Years ago the women looked natural (ish!) but its gone wild the last say 5 years. This year was a joke with the women looking like inflated gargoyles. Also seems to be mainly a white girl problem.

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 16:35

@YesterdaysFuture you have the option to go to registered nurses etc., or to go to these backyard people

Not to be facetious but wouldn't eating chocolate and crips get your there in a more enjoyable way? I have a big bum and hate it, why the hell are people doing this?

To society but not to the individual women concerned. As a pp said, if this puts off one woman having unnecessary surgery then the thread is useful.

Runnerinthenight · 26/09/2024 16:36

Allfur · 26/09/2024 15:58

The reason you don't like hairy legs doesn't come from nowhere

Oh please!!!!

Uricon2 · 26/09/2024 16:37

Whether shaving your legs is giving in to societal pressure or not, the fact is that doing it (or applying inch thick makeup, or orange spray tan) isn't going to harm you. Having "aesthetic" procedures, especially when done by dodgy people with no medical qualifications, may end in disfigurement or death. The two things are not equal.

In addition to much, much better regulation and rogue operators having the book thrown at them, there should be open conversation about the dangers of aping people who can afford to get these things done with a modicum of safety (and even then it can go wrong)

challengingaminime · 26/09/2024 16:37

I'm probably showing my age but when I was her age I was paranoid about my bum looking too big and when girls when shopping together you'd often hear 'does my bum look big in this? (With the hope it didn't.
Now it's with the hope it does. I still couldn't imagine wanting to look like I had a bigger bum than I did. I was proud of my pert little bum in my youth.
