Labour PIP benefit cuts

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:01

Can someone help me please?

I'm absolutely spiraling. I've just read up about the Labour conference and everything about PIP reforms.

I'm absolutely panicking. I feel like giving up. I'm on PIP with mental health.

I do work. Part time.

There's been no official announcements, but plenty of scaremongering

hoglets · 25/09/2024 21:11

I don't think there was any announcement? what are you worried about?

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:13

That payments are going to be slashed immediately.

Eligibility will be changing.

Where have you seen this

randomchap · 25/09/2024 21:16

They would not slash the payments immediately and plunge thousands of people into poverty.

Where are you getting this info from? Is it reputable and well known news outlets?

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:16

In the media.

Newspapers.

Labour are making noises about long term sick needing to get back to work, so they will cut benefits in one form or another. Hard to know exactly what this will look like though.

LadyKenya · 25/09/2024 21:18

What media outlets? I have seen nothing to back up what you are saying OP.

hoglets · 25/09/2024 21:19

please stop posting this nonsense. None of this is true otherwise you would provide some links. It's total BS.

something2say · 25/09/2024 21:20

Stop panicking. It may not affect you.

FWIW I worked in one place where one lady received £1600 pcm and spent it all on stuff that later had to be donated. Her disability qualified her, but her actual need was for a part time voluntary job as she was lonely for people, not stuff.

I then worked somewhere else where one man was in a wheelchair and couldn't tolerate any interaction or he would self harm until he bled. He absolutely doesn't need £1600 of the taxpayers money each month.

Hopefully people like this will be re means assessed. Along with those who receive that amount, never spend it and regularly get benefits cut off because it gets saved and they go over the threshold....

discoballdave · 25/09/2024 21:20

PIP is not long term sick. They're talking about long term sick absence from work/ineligibility to look for work. You can get PIP while full time employed regardless of your salary.

Please don't be concerned. It's unlikely they'll go for PIP at all.

As far as I know the maximum pip payment is around £800 per month so not sure where you are getting £1600.

I've just posted the links. I'm not good with phones and IT stuff.

Not PIP there on about ESA.

Very different, but it's BS anyway. They'd plunge thousands into poverty.

@Mainoo72 yes the government are talking about getting people back into work - by cutting NHS waiting list s. I haven't heard a word about cutting PIP.

I think, if you simply want to make a political point, your comments are fair enough -though they are wrong. But to frighten the opening poster by seeking to agree that the government are planning to cut benefits for people with disabilities/illness?

not on. No such thing has been said.

Putting · 25/09/2024 21:26

The Big Issue article doesn’t say anything about PIP being cut.

The other link regurgitates something from an IFS paper where they propose different things, most of which won’t happen.

Until something is announced formally then it’s just scaremongering so best not to listen to it / read it.

EsmeSusanOgg · 25/09/2024 21:26

There's been extensive media coverage of an IFS (Institute of Fiscal Studies) report that has suggested PIP eligibility changes/ level changes could save money. The report also says that many people receiving PIP would face hardship. This is one piece elf budget speculation being reported. The actual report from the IFS seems fairly 'here's the pros and here's the cons' and quote balanced. But there's been a fair few alarmist headlines about this online. Separately the PM said that they would be cracking down on benefit fraud.

I'm guessing this is what OP is refering to? OP, try to not focus too much on the headlines if you can.

MyPeppyTaupeFox · 25/09/2024 21:27

Please don't panic OP. My understanding is that they are talking about getting people out of work into work (so people on ESA for example).

Newspapers.

The government hasn't said anything. Newspapers make up stuff.

DinosaurMunch · 25/09/2024 21:30

It's true that we have too many people long term sick. They have announced plans to tackle this with increased preventive health care. Not slashing benefits

Miley1967 · 25/09/2024 21:33

I think it is just scaremongering, but it does need massive reform.
