Labour PIP benefit cuts

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:01

Can someone help me please?

I'm absolutely spiraling. I've just read up about the Labour conference and everything about PIP reforms.

I'm absolutely panicking. I feel like giving up. I'm on PIP with mental health.

I do work. Part time.

🤣🤣🤣 I wonder how many people claiming PIP voted Labour.

Pretty much everybody I should imagine

Just like the WFA cut then. Extremely nuanced.

Those in most need of it will still receive it.

Why are you laughing that disabled people are concerned about their future, regardless of whether or not they voted Labour? Frankly, this says much more about you than it says about them.

Lots of other people also voted Labour - yes, even those pensioners who have had WFA withdrawn. I'm not laughing at them, I'd like to ensure that all those in the most need receive support, regardless of their age or mobility. Or indeed their vote.

EasternStandard · 26/09/2024 11:44

The spiralling feeling the op mentions will also be felt by many pensioners on basic state pensions this winter

Although that one is confirmed and not changing, with no impact assessment

caringcarer · 26/09/2024 11:48

OhmygodDont · 25/09/2024 22:22

Pip gets you out of the benefit cap does it not.

This.

Winteriscominginfast · 26/09/2024 11:51

What I'm reading is they are targeting those who aren't working, so it will be those on ESA or UC. My PIP means I've been able to reduce my hours which means I can keep working, if I'm expected to work full time I simply can't due to my illness. PIP is a valuable in work benefit that supports people like me to keep working, it's unlikely they will change it too much.

I presume they are thinking along the lines of how Brexit voters where called turkeys voting for Christmas.

The poorest will often vote labour and it’s labour wanting to take everything away. Turkeys and Christmas.

And both would be of no use to my dd who needs specialised therapy. Also if they’re under the CMHT and on endless wait lists how are they going to whip out therapy elsewhere. There is a shortage of professionals doing it.

I've also read about the government giving vouchers instead of cash. All well and good if the vouchers can be used to pay for things like specialist therapy or hairdresser to wash a person's hair or cleaner to clean house for disabled person but if can only be used to pick aids from catalogues it won't work as many people spend their PIP on other things to help them get through their lives.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 11:59

Doesn't really affect me as I don't claim pip and something needs to be done because pip numbers are rising.

ByMerryKoala · 26/09/2024 12:09

I suppose we'll have to wait till the end of October to find out who the Labour Party believe to have the "broadest shoulders". Although we know it includes poor pensioners who are just outside the help of pension credit.

I know exactly what they were thinking and it's still in really poor taste to laugh at disabled people being worried about their income, however you try to justify it.

@LadyKenya

"
WFA is categorically not still being paid to those who need it most. It's just been removed from them with immediate effect. Have you ever heard of the boiling frog analogy? Yeah, that.

Let's just hope this winter is relatively mild and please support your local food bank. Lives will depend on it."

The ones that need it most will be on pension credit as they have the lowest income. So no, I don't agree with your post

As it's my words you quoted:

It is completely irrelevant whether you 'agree' or not. WFA has been taken from all pensioners who do not receive pension credit and that includes pensioners whose only income is the full state pension of £221 a week, a mere £3 above the pension credit limit. 1.6 million disabled pensioners have also had WFA taken from them. It is not up for debate that many, many vulnerable people who need WFA will be affected - it is incontrovertible fact. There's probably a reason no updated impact assessment has been released.

Ironically there was the same argument when people in poorer areas ,voted Conservative in 2019 ,people couldn't understand why they would

ByMerryKoala · 26/09/2024 13:39

I suppose the unifying theme is that people take great pleasure in suggesting the poor have brought misfortune upon themselves.

Perhaps it is more satisfying than acknowledging that the poor are shafted from both sides?

Tangerinenets · 26/09/2024 13:48

PIP does need a reform. I know two people who receive pip and have no idea how. I also know a few that should be getting it and I can’t understand why they don’t.

I assume as it’s Labour and reform voters that brought this shit show about.

time for a change. Enjoy.

That’s they it’s a vote for dog shit or cat shit picking between labour and the tories. It’s all shit just which one do you think might smell a little nicer.

I never thought I’d say it though, but the tories never tried to take a couple of hundred quid off of pensioners. In fact they gave it to them.

I agree, it’s ridiculous and mean. The government want to cut the cost of the benefit bill as it’s growing.I just hope they do this in a way that doesn’t massively impact disabled people but let’s face it when have they ever made things better for them.
Let’s just see what happens but what ever the government do someone will suffer.

Eekomouse · 26/09/2024 14:17

Pip is not an out of work benefit, it is financial help so you can maintain your independence - including working if you can

ByMerryKoala · 26/09/2024 14:20

I think that at least when the Tories were in power, there was a good amount of scrutiny when they had the boot out for the vulnerable.

But now the same shit is delivered by Reeves, well then all of a sudden those same robust voices apparently all know a millionaire pensioner who blew the WFA on fripperies anyway and their pip claiming neighbour is swinging the lead.

I'm not sure if it's cowardice or pure cognitive dissonance to not acknowledge the about turn after years of finger wagging at the Tories for being heartless bastards only to find that the new lot are the same as the last lot.

So true. So if you find that you are on basic benefits and Labour cut anything don't rely on Labour stalwarts doing much other than applaud

It was the same on the state access to bank accounts thread. I get why people feel targeted.
