Labour PIP benefit cuts

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:01

Can someone help me please?

I'm absolutely spiraling. I've just read up about the Labour conference and everything about PIP reforms.

I'm absolutely panicking. I feel like giving up. I'm on PIP with mental health.

I do work. Part time.

Thanks everyone.

This is why I don't pay attention to the news. I honestly don't know what made me read it tonight.

For what it's worth I do work part time. I worked full time until 18 months ago.

Always worked whilst battling manic depression.

Makes me feel like a scrounger.

As far as I know the maximum pip payment is around £800 per month so not sure where you are getting £1600.

Probably combining highest rates of PIP with standard UC and LCWRA or ESA support group.

Oh give over. People should work IF they can. Because it's usually good for you. Hardly even mildly controversial.

beeloubee · 25/09/2024 21:51

Like to see this prick with a delayed diagnosis of broken neck like me plus tethered cord with no treatment from NHS return back to work. What a Prat. People are long term sick for a reason, another out of touch politician.

caringcarer · 25/09/2024 21:54

I would imagine it's because if you get top level PIP for care and mobility and are claiming UC too then they pay you extra for having a disability too, so really you get credited and paid twice for being disabled. It happens with children who claim DLA and then parents get paid extra because they have a disabled DC too. I would think if they wanted to reduce disability payments they would stop people being paid twice for disability payments once from PIP/DLA and then again through UC. I have read that Labour want to crack down on mental health issues too particularly those who suffer from Anxiety and are too anxious to go out to work. I don't know the answer maybe working from home might help if they get anxious going out. The previous Tory government were considering introducing vouchers instead of cash for the disabled. I don't know how that would have worked for services but I suppose ok for disability aids or incontinence pads etc.

harrumphh · 25/09/2024 21:54

There were only 2 new policy announcements in the conference and neither of those were related to PIP. I watched the whole thing.

No way are they going to announce anything about PIP when there's still so much backlash about winter fuel.

Maybe the "Where they can" passed you by. Obviously some people will always be too sick, or disabled to work. Most sensible people know this.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/09/2024 21:56

PIP is non means tested, you could be a millionaire and claim it, it is partly designed to help people maintain working because we all know that being disabled makes life harder and more costly to adapt for every day life.

My Dad said that too. Thank you x

You are really missing the point.

Its really not good how many people are long term not working due to illness/incapacity, including mental health. The point is to do more to prevent/treat the illness. Its good for the vast majority of people to be supported/helped to get back to work.

Overthebow · 25/09/2024 22:00

Pip does need a reform, as does other parts of the welfare system, but I very much doubt he’s going to cut pip in one go in the budget and put people into poverty. It wouldn’t help anyone.

That or hit while the hates already high because once you’ve done all the shitting on people it can only improve from there.

Hope that people have started to forget or rather not care by the time voting come around again.

They would not slash the payments immediately and plunge thousands of people into poverty.

Where are you getting this info from? Is it reputable and well known news outlets?

Well to be fair not many people thought they'd immediately stop winter fuel allowance for millions of pensioners either. Plunging many of them into poverty. It's not surprising people are worried, feels like all bets are off at the moment.

LadyKenya · 25/09/2024 22:10

It feels like there is an agenda that is going on here. It is see-through.

People forget that going to work is a thing, and should be the goal.

Freshersfluforyou · 25/09/2024 22:20

Something crazy like 22% of working age adults are not working or looking for work. We cant sustain a quarter to a fifth of the adult population it's simply too many. The maths doesn't maths.

If somebody.is entitled to the maximum PIP award they might also be entitled to universal credit ,whilst PIP is non means tested and universal credit is An entitlement to PIp cam enhance universal credit awards in some cases

That might well be true, but has nothing to do with PIP - PIP isn’t an out-of-work only benefit.

OhmygodDont · 25/09/2024 22:22

Pip gets you out of the benefit cap does it not.

Removing a £200 annual benefit from some pensioners whilst increasing the state pension by more than that is not plunging people into poverty.

Saying that it is, is just scaremongering and frankly makes you look foolish

riversflows · 25/09/2024 22:27

Shit..no ? I can't work because of serious ill health and without higher rate pip and esa I'd go under. Please let it not be true.

JenniferBooth · 25/09/2024 22:30

Mainoo72 · 25/09/2024 21:17

Labour are making noises about long term sick needing to get back to work, so they will cut benefits in one form or another. Hard to know exactly what this will look like though.

They had better deal with the NHS waiting lists first then oh and someone needs to tell them that PIP is NOT an out of work benefit,
