Labour PIP benefit cuts

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 25/09/2024 21:01

Can someone help me please?

I'm absolutely spiraling. I've just read up about the Labour conference and everything about PIP reforms.

I'm absolutely panicking. I feel like giving up. I'm on PIP with mental health.

I do work. Part time.

I think there needs to be a reform on benefits.
Our neighbour claims mental health issues, and laughs about how much she gets and openly admits she has no mental health issues she just 'can't be bothered to work'.

They would not slash the payments immediately and plunge thousands of people into poverty.

Where are you getting this info from? Is it reputable and well known news outlets?

( They’ve done that with pensioners) not meaning to be alarmist.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 25/09/2024 22:43

There are too many people not working. That is a fact. Some undoubtedly need to be on long term benefits. Some need extra support to help them work. Some take the piss. I have had a number of people come to a first appointment with demanding a letter saying they cant work due to MH. When I have not even assessed them yet. Most of them are full of shit. I support people who have genuine need. But I am fed up with the sheer numbers now who just want to claim.

Viviennemary · 25/09/2024 22:46

PIP needs to.be abolished and a new system set up.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/09/2024 22:52

They need to reform the NHS and mental health services first.

A one off £200 a year payment is not quite the same as slashing a four weekly payment worth potentially hundreds a month, plus all the rest that can come with it like sdp payments.

Thevelvelletes · 25/09/2024 22:54

This has been done to death.for the most part benefit claiming is not an easy process and most people would give their eye teeth to have their health and work.
Some get pip/ADP Scotland and still work under Very difficult circumstances.

But you haven't read anything about PIP reforms, because nothing was said about PIP reforms.
I either feel bad for you that the media have managed to spin this bullshit to make you feel scared.
Or I'm angry that you're yet another poster trying to whip up hate for Labour.
I hope you're the former.

That payments are going to be slashed immediately.

Eligibility will be changing.

The creation of PIP took a couple of years, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a year or 2 to reform it if there is an intention to do so. Nothing is ever going to change overnight in relation to PIP - legislative change needed so there will always be a fair amount of warning.

Jc2001 · 25/09/2024 23:17

Long term sick need to get back to work where they can says starmer

Seems fair enough

SmudgeButt · 25/09/2024 23:17

Please don't panic when it's all speculation. It may never happen. The papers/websites that push these things should be shut down.

No I'm defo a Labour voter.

It is just the headlines. I stay away from the media because stresses me out and today I've read the headlines and then the different/same stories in each of papers.

I'll be honest and say I don't think I've read enough about it all and just became spooked this evening.

Labour are making noises about long term sick needing to get back to work, so they will cut benefits in one form or another. Hard to know exactly what this will look like though.

And this would have no bearing on PIP since it has nothing to do with work. OP can stand down and maybe reconsider their preferred new outlets.

They all copy the same unchecked shite from each other

Well, the removal of the winter fuel allowance is pushing a million into fuel poverty, and under labours own numbers (albeit in opposition) will lead to 4,000 more deaths. So I wouldn’t bet that they won’t do it!

However, AFAIK it is not policy at the moment, so I would try not to worry too much. This government is tone deaf and politically inept, but they must have got the message from their members by now…

I know. Didn't realise how bad until tonight!

Think I'm going to engage my media/news blackout again.

Nothing ever good comes from me reading the news.

Will go back to reading up about MAFS!

Oh Jeez, I'm currently waiting for DS's PIP review to be either renewed or slashed - it's a fucking wonder of science that I'm still mentally intact after over 20 years of this shit.

DS is so very nearly over the touchline towards being an able, productive member of society - with this crone's help - cut me even deeper you new Govt - no one will ever beat us.

mycatsbestfriend · 26/09/2024 00:16

They need to improve healthcare if they want people to work

Newspapers.

Never believe the papers.

Sadcat22 · 26/09/2024 00:27

I have read that they might be reforming PIP by giving therapy or equipment instead of a monthly payment like in other countries.
They have asked the public their views and are currently dealing with that as it finished a few weeks ago.
so all you can do is wait and see what happens but try not to panic

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 26/09/2024 05:52

They had better deal with the NHS waiting lists first then oh and someone needs to tell them that PIP is NOT an out of work benefit,

Dealing with NHS waiting lists is the way they have specifically said they will get people back to work.

And they haven't said PIP is an out of work benefit. I don't think they've even mentioned PIP.

Well, the removal of the winter fuel allowance is pushing a million into fuel poverty, and under labours own numbers (albeit in opposition) will lead to 4,000 more deaths.

While I also disagree with the threshold for WFA, and think it's far too low, the 4,000 deaths was from removing WFA altogether. I presume they'd argue that by continuing to give it to the very poorest (which is where I assume the 4,000 deaths would have come from), that can be avoided.
Obviously, simply "people not dying" is not a great measure of success. Kind of a low bar in terms of quality of life.
