To not want to stay in sister’s haunted house?

EmilyRigby · 25/09/2024 15:39

Lets say you don’t believe in ghosts but your sisters house freaks you the fuck out and the last time you stayed there you left at 3am - I don’t believe in ghosts but there is something about that house I really really don’t like. Nephew won’t step foot inside the place and my dad won’t go in on his own. Her friends used to stay over some weekends but now they won’t go overnight either.

She’s asked me to stay there for a week in October for £500 (like a caretaker fee). Could do with the money but I don’t think I can do it. Am I being ridiculous? She can’t get anyone else to do it.

(Obviously there are reasons she can’t just leave it empty for a week)

If you don’t believe in ghosts then what’s the issue?

wickerlady · 25/09/2024 15:46

More info please. Why did you leave at 3am? Why won't anyone else step inside?

I’m intrigued why nobody wants to stay. What specifically is making people feel
like this?

What happened?

coxesorangepippin · 25/09/2024 15:48

£500 for a week??!?

EmmaOvary · 25/09/2024 15:48

🍿

susiedaisy1912 · 25/09/2024 15:49

Nope don't do it, it will stress you out too much. Regardless of whether it's haunted or not you don't need to force yourself to be brave and make yourself do something that will make you stressed frightened and unhappy, as well as the build up to it where you will dread it looming.

BMW6 · 25/09/2024 15:49

Lol I'll do it!

TwinklyAmberOrca · 25/09/2024 15:50

There are SO many ghost hunter people who would PAY to stay in a haunted house for a week! Just employ a ghost hunter to house sit!

I love the idea of ghosts. Why did you leave at 3am?!?!

elQuintoConyo · 25/09/2024 15:50

I'll do it!! I like talking to ghosts and closing self-opening kitchen drawers. I draw the line a knife-throwung poltergeists, but if she puts the knives away before she leaves, no problem.

Oh, and any and all dolls, teddies and toy clowns need to be removed from the property.

Sleep with the lights and TV on and you'll be fine.

Teanbiscuits33 · 25/09/2024 15:51

Nobody’s house is haunted 😂 there might be things that make it seem creepy such as creeky floorboards and noisy pipes dependent on its age, but there’s no such thing as a haunted house. It’s psychological, and because you’ve now convinced yourself it’s haunted it’s just exacerbated your fear.

GiddyRobin · 25/09/2024 15:51

Nope, sorry, you have to give the spooky story! 👻

cheezncrackers · 25/09/2024 15:52

If the house creeps you out and clearly creeps other people out too then say 'No'. Would you be alone staying there?

I don't know if I believe in ghosts, but I listen to the Uncanny podcast and there are certainly lots of strange phenomena on that. Have you ever listened to it @EmilyRigby? If not, do. It's on BBC Sounds. Start with Series 1.

Guavafish1 · 25/09/2024 15:52

Do it and bring some music…

Zombella · 25/09/2024 15:53

I love spooky stuff. Heck, I'd pay HER £500 for the week to let me stay!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/09/2024 15:54

Surely a professional house sitter would charge less than that?

Spidey66 · 25/09/2024 16:01

There are no such things as ghosts, so for that reason you are unreasonable.

But unless she has pets or something, I cant see any reason why she won't leave it unoccupied, I don't understand why she can't leave it. A few months I can understand because that could cause it to become cold/damp/dusty/occupied by squatters/whatever, but why won't she leave her home empty for a week? Most people would!!!

SmudgeButt · 25/09/2024 16:07

Say you'll do it for £750. Take a friend. Take a rosemary and lavendar smudge to burn and cleanse the house when you get there. Enjoy the money and have a party. Tell the ghost they can join in if they fancy it.

I've seen this movie many times.

You need holy water, a bible, and salt.

Also it helps if you're a busty virgin. For some reason they live longer.

TakeMeToKernow · 25/09/2024 16:09

I assume she lives in a forest with some dogs and chickens…
