To not want to stay in sister’s haunted house?

EmilyRigby · 25/09/2024 15:39

Lets say you don’t believe in ghosts but your sisters house freaks you the fuck out and the last time you stayed there you left at 3am - I don’t believe in ghosts but there is something about that house I really really don’t like. Nephew won’t step foot inside the place and my dad won’t go in on his own. Her friends used to stay over some weekends but now they won’t go overnight either.

She’s asked me to stay there for a week in October for £500 (like a caretaker fee). Could do with the money but I don’t think I can do it. Am I being ridiculous? She can’t get anyone else to do it.

(Obviously there are reasons she can’t just leave it empty for a week)

I spent part of my childhood in a house like that. So many odd things happened, pressure on the end of the bed like someone sitting down, feeling someone put a hand on your arm or shoulder, blue light bouncing down the stairs, whispering etc. It wasn't just our family that witnessed some of these things.

I've been in many other places that feel troubled or comfortable, I happily walked about an old building I worked in at night but many of my colleagues did not want to be left there. It did have an odd feel to it but nothing nasty.

I don't believe in ghosts but I do believe in Genius Loci, not necessarily as in an entity but as a feeling something is or is not right. as @VimesandhisCardboardBoots loads of scientific reasons why but it doesn't make you feel any better about it.

Parents were looking for a period Cottage at one stage in their lives- one they looked at called ''Cuckoo's Knob'' had such a nasty vibe they didn't even unlock the door to go inside.

It felt hostile.

Those were the days when an estate agent gave one the keys if a house was empty, as many old cottages /houses were in the 1970's.

However, there is an interesting video on you tube of people who live in ''murder houses''- one of them turned out to be an elderly Whippet dog show person and her daughter.

A long established Whippet Rescue took on the distressed and traumatised Whippets found at the property. {1999}

But so say the house felt ok to live in afterwards, according to the new owners.

What sort of things have happened at the house? You could buy some sage and burn it in each room.

I'm sure there would be lots of people who would love to stay in a haunted house!

White Sage - it smells lovely if nothing else!

Busty virgin 🤣🤣

Never be the one with stringy hair, pale face and a whiny voice, they’re first up.

OP, I have seen ghosts and so have my parents, sister and DH. But I wouldn’t choose to stay in a house if I knew it was haunted (except for mine, which also is but our resident ghost doesn’t bother me).

Mrsdyna · 25/09/2024 17:58

£500? Maybe the spirits are trying to lure you there so she's offered you that much! 😂

KleoKangaroo · 25/09/2024 18:04

I don't believe in ghosts but some places are creepy and if it makes you uncomfortable it's perfectly okay to decline

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 25/09/2024 18:09

Sage it! Every New Years Day I sage the whole house. We had a few weird things going on after a bereavement and things that were normal, suddenly just felt creepy to us. The first time I saged it, I'd kicked everyone out while I did it and my youngest after being home for a short while said his room just feels better now and he's not scared of the attic anymore. I didn't tell him why I was burning sage, he probably thought it was just like an incense stick.

Or/and have firm words when you get in there. One of the weird things happening was our bed would shake for about ten seconds, no reason for it, have lived here years and never had it happen nor had it happen since...

...I had been watching a movie downstairs when my DH came down, his face white as a sheet and told me he was settling down to sleep when the bed started shaking and he knows I won't believe him... But I did because I'd experienced it without telling him. So I went upstairs and firmly told thin air, whatever or whoever it is here, they need to go because they're scaring us. This was the night after a drawer suddenly pulled open at 3 am one night... Well, he went to sleep soundly after that while I was petrified incase I'd angered it and would open my eyes and have some demon looking back at me 🤣 spoiler alert: I survived to tell the story.

DoYouReally · 25/09/2024 18:11

It's not haunted and even if you believe in ghosts, when it's the last time, there's been a report of someone being murdered or attached by a ghost.

The house clearly has a construction, insulation, electricity, subsidence or flooring issue.

She needs a building surveyor not a ghost hunter.

I would stay and it wouldn't cost me a second thought.

Regarding the shaking bed....

I was in bed one night, and my bed began to shake, quite noticeably..I thought someone was underneath it, shaking it with their feet {big heavy bed}

I leapt out with a shriek, and looked- nothing under the bed at all.

Then I felt it again, like a heavy lorry going past, but silent.

It was an actual earthquake.

{UK} Early 2004 {??} People at work felt it too.

It must have felt horrible if your parents didn't even go through the door! I always go by first impression on houses, one flat I looked at years ago had horrible feeling to the stairs. The EA was with me so I felt I couldn't back out and the flat itself was fine, but I didn't take it on.

I know the Americans hate Murder Houses and often won't even consider buying them. I don't see why, it's just an awful thing that happened there.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 25/09/2024 18:15

@oakleaffy that's the first thing I checked for! Well, after making sure one of the kids weren't playing a trick on me 🤣 this was in... 2019 I think. Happened 4x over a fortnight maybe. There was nothing reported and the neighbours didn't notice anything either, terraced houses too. It's a weird experience, isn't it!

HauntedbyMagpies · 25/09/2024 18:15

Teanbiscuits33 · 25/09/2024 15:51

Nobody’s house is haunted 😂 there might be things that make it seem creepy such as creeky floorboards and noisy pipes dependent on its age, but there’s no such thing as a haunted house. It’s psychological, and because you’ve now convinced yourself it’s haunted it’s just exacerbated your fear.

Nice and easy to say when you've not witnessed anything yourself! I have and as a non-believer I was fucking terrified. In one place I lived, my vase flew off the mantelpiece, hovered in mid air for about 3 seconds then slammed onto the floor with so much power it woke up my neighbours OPPOSITE.

Of course people like you will laugh and dismiss it with a few emojis but I know what I witnessed in that house and I wasn't on any medication, under any stress, sleep deprived, hallucinating or had anything to drink before that's trotted out. I was sat eating noodles watching YouTube, perfectly relaxed.

I felt the one that had its epicentre in Dudley. I woke up in the middle of the night and the bed was shaking, I had a few glasses on my bed side table and they were clinking. I remember thinking "Oh, it must be an earthquake" (yeah, cos they happen every day) and going back to sleep! I had 4 young kids, one of whom still woke in the night, so I put my total lack of reaction down to sleep deprivation!

Of course there hasn't been a 'report' of someone being attacked by a ghost, because that person would be laughed at and/or thrown into inpatient care, regardless of whether it was true or not, they wouldn't be believed!
Regardless of what anyone witnesses, we now live in the age of technology & AI so even if somebody had actual proof/footage of a ghost or apparition, Technology or AI is what everyone would accuse their footage of being 🤷🏼‍♀️ It would be immediately dismissed & laughed at

I can understand why someone wouldn't want to live in a 'Murder house'

I definitely wouldn't- but some people don't mind.

Has your sister or anyone ever been harmed by a ghost there? What does your sister think of it all?

like this?

I'd love to know too!

Thanks I'll bookmark that video.

It is interesting.

I met someone many years later who was involved with the rehoming of the Whippets from the property.
She said they were terribly traumatised.

Reading about the incident I can understand why.

Poor, innocent women and poor innocent dogs, and a very evil man.

Even senior Detective called him ''evil beyond words''

Teanbiscuits33 · 25/09/2024 18:50

@HauntedbyMagpies Scientists have been asking people for irrefutable evidence of genuine hauntings and ghost sightings for literally hundreds of years, they’ve never had any, there have even been substantial financial rewards offered with no luck. If it could be proven, nobody would be laughed at. Sounds to me like you’re quite suggestible even though you say you don’t believe in ghosts.

MarmaladeJars · 25/09/2024 19:08

Looking for an update from OP as to why she left at 3am. I hope she comes up with a good story soon. She has left us all hanging!

Skate76 · 25/09/2024 19:10

Presumably your sister stays there every night without being murdered by a ghost so am sure you'll be fine 👍

BoundaryGirl3939 · 25/09/2024 19:11

Could you get a priest to exorcise the place? Holy water and blessed salt everywhere around the house?

Personally, I wouldn't stay there for 500. I would be afraid that something would attach itself to me.

Did your sister do weird things in the past, like ouiji board? Or was the place haunted before she arrived?

Apparently a vase came flying off the mantelpiece and hung in the air for three seconds before crashing to the ground so powerfully that it woke neighbours across the street. She sounds entirely believable.
