To not want to stay in sister’s haunted house?

EmilyRigby · 25/09/2024 15:39

Lets say you don’t believe in ghosts but your sisters house freaks you the fuck out and the last time you stayed there you left at 3am - I don’t believe in ghosts but there is something about that house I really really don’t like. Nephew won’t step foot inside the place and my dad won’t go in on his own. Her friends used to stay over some weekends but now they won’t go overnight either.

She’s asked me to stay there for a week in October for £500 (like a caretaker fee). Could do with the money but I don’t think I can do it. Am I being ridiculous? She can’t get anyone else to do it.

(Obviously there are reasons she can’t just leave it empty for a week)

I wouldn’t - whether you believe in ghosts or not, the house makes you feel anxious. Don’t make yourself feel frightened for a week!!!

Looking for an update from OP as to why she left at 3am. I hope she comes up with a good story soon. She has left us all hanging!

Oh no, sorry, that was another poster - I got confused. Still, utterly bonkers 🤣

Itonlytakesadiagram · 25/09/2024 19:21

I really want to know OP what happened there.
I don't want to believe in stuff like that but in my childhood home my brother and I both experienced being breathed on, a feeling of being watched and the wall being smacked near our heads when asleep. The last one really shit me up. Parents experienced being pushed there and the next terrace house on would see a person walking around 😱

I'm afraid the ghosts have probably got her.

Mill3nnial · 25/09/2024 20:18

I'd like more details as it sounds interesting but ultimately YABU if you don't want to stay there.

LlynTegid · 25/09/2024 20:18

I doubt there are ghosts.

There can be places you just feel uncomfortable staying in, that is enough to say no.

cheezncrackers · 25/09/2024 15:52

If the house creeps you out and clearly creeps other people out too then say 'No'. Would you be alone staying there?

I don't know if I believe in ghosts, but I listen to the Uncanny podcast and there are certainly lots of strange phenomena on that. Have you ever listened to it @EmilyRigby? If not, do. It's on BBC Sounds. Start with Series 1.

It's really good there was a documentary also some of the stories seem real one was from someone that lives near me. There was one that was so far fetched the episode about the man that that used a ouigi board. He said he kept getting creepy calls not matter where he went.

GameOfJones · 25/09/2024 20:45

I find all of this really fascinating (also an Uncanny listener!) I do not believe in ghosts but there are lots of proven phenomena that can induce feelings of fear in people. Infrasound as PPs have said, or inhaling mould spores which can cause hallucinations, or even architectural features.

Knowing this however, definitely wouldn't make me feel any better late at night in a house that made me feel uncomfortable or frightened so no, I wouldn't do it. I'm sure she could find a professional house sitter for that sort of money.

cookiebee · 25/09/2024 21:14

HELLO, OP! We are waiting and it’s cold! (Disappointed ghost noises!)

To not want to stay in sister’s haunted house?
OppsUpsSide · 25/09/2024 21:15

I had this exact scenario! I refused but agreed to have her pets at mine

I don't believe in ghosts either, but am fascinated by why people believe certain places are haunted etc. There are some really interesting scientific explanations for why some places make people feel afraid, including infrasound, which is basically sounds too low for humans to consciously hear but that cause reactions in the human body including fear, changes in heart rate etc. If lots of people feel uneasy in the house but can't explain why, something like this could be a non-paranormal explanation.

A pp mentioned Uncanny podcasts and TV series. There's a lot of discussion about infrasound on that.

How very disappointing, I want it to be a proper ghost. One that walks through walls and stands over your bed.

ChopstickNovice · 25/09/2024 21:23

Please come back and share more details, OP!

PrincessRhaenys · 25/09/2024 21:25

£500 for a poke around my sister's cool house for a week? Yeah go on and haunt me!

Seriously op. I definitely don't belief in ghosts, obvs. But I do believe in being freaked out. It depends on whether being freaked out for a week is worth £500 to you 🤷‍♀️ If not, then don't do it.

I'm intrigued as to the back story here....

Why does she need a caretaker? Confused Is this the house?

Secradonugh · 25/09/2024 21:51

EmilyRigby · 25/09/2024 15:47

shes desperate and can’t get anyone else that she trusts to do it

Personally I do not believe in ghosts but I do get that you can be freaked out in certain places. If it were me I would try to work it out. A friend son would freak out inher flat so she got a blessing done. The kid wad never freaked out again. I've been freaked because of odd draughts and doors which open the wrong way or pdd noises. Once I've worked it out I stop being freaked by it. Perhaps have a think what it is. Which freaks you our first. Do you believe in ghosts, do you believe someone is looking at you... etc

Sorry forget room layouts. Backs to doors are known to invoke fear, windows with no coverings on a dark night... I love finding why we respond to dangers which no longer exist but is buries deep inside our fight flight parts.

ThatshallotBaby · 25/09/2024 22:12

I’ve just got back from babysitting my cousin’s little boy. I definitely heard a few unexplained creaks. I’d bought him some bubble wands and we stood on the doorstep waving them and then he starting saying about ghosts in the darkGrin
I wouldn’t want to stay there! Even though he very sweetly asked me!

ThatshallotBaby · 25/09/2024 22:13

Old cottage, beautiful, but quite dark - tiny windows

So cold windows, draughts, perhaps heating on, which makes floorboards creak. You nephew is probably tuned into ghosts because he's heard adults talking.

🍿 am here for OP's story (come on!)

elQuintoConyo · 25/09/2024 15:50

I'll do it!! I like talking to ghosts and closing self-opening kitchen drawers. I draw the line a knife-throwung poltergeists, but if she puts the knives away before she leaves, no problem.

Oh, and any and all dolls, teddies and toy clowns need to be removed from the property.

Sleep with the lights and TV on and you'll be fine.

@elQuintoConyo nothing to do with the thread but can I just say I love the boldness of your username? Had a chuckle 🤭

BabyR · 25/09/2024 22:31

My new build is built on the grounds of an old children’s home - I didn’t know until the days leading up to picking up my keys. I had googled my new address to look on street view maps and it came up. They’ve even recycled the house number so my address is exactly the same.

99% of the time I couldn’t feel more relaxed and at home here but if I read a spooky post my house starts to feel scary. What I’m getting at is how much of the fear is just in our minds.

cookiebee · 25/09/2024 22:56

Well presumably King Kong has snatched OP and she’s half way up the Empire State Building by now, probably dropped her phone as well, it’s the only reason we were teased with the possibility of a tale then left hanging that I can think of!

Josette77 · 25/09/2024 22:56

I've never felt more abandoned and betrayed.

OP, we need closure.

I assume she lives in a forest with some dogs and chickens…
