To not want to stay in sister’s haunted house?

EmilyRigby · 25/09/2024 15:39

Lets say you don’t believe in ghosts but your sisters house freaks you the fuck out and the last time you stayed there you left at 3am - I don’t believe in ghosts but there is something about that house I really really don’t like. Nephew won’t step foot inside the place and my dad won’t go in on his own. Her friends used to stay over some weekends but now they won’t go overnight either.

She’s asked me to stay there for a week in October for £500 (like a caretaker fee). Could do with the money but I don’t think I can do it. Am I being ridiculous? She can’t get anyone else to do it.

(Obviously there are reasons she can’t just leave it empty for a week)

I've seen this movie many times.

You need holy water, a bible, and salt.

Also it helps if you're a busty virgin. For some reason they live longer.

Busty virgin 🤣🤣

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 25/09/2024 16:39

I can do it?? Could do with £500 now 😂

BabyR · 25/09/2024 16:41

Paying/accepting £500 from a sibling sounds crazy to me. I would take some headphones for over night and help my sister out.

SomewhereAround · 25/09/2024 16:42

She could easily get a professional house sitter for that money, rather than anyone from her clearly nervy and superstitious family.

BabyR · 25/09/2024 16:43

She count rent it out for a week? With Halloween coming up someone might pay her a fortune 😆

Uricon2 · 25/09/2024 16:50

How bad is this place?! I'm imagining The Shining meets Borley rectory, with a dash of Poltergeist for good measure!

sockarefootwear · 25/09/2024 16:51

I don't believe in ghosts either, but am fascinated by why people believe certain places are haunted etc. There are some really interesting scientific explanations for why some places make people feel afraid, including infrasound, which is basically sounds too low for humans to consciously hear but that cause reactions in the human body including fear, changes in heart rate etc. If lots of people feel uneasy in the house but can't explain why, something like this could be a non-paranormal explanation.

A pp mentioned Uncanny podcasts and TV series. There's a lot of discussion about infrasound on that.

Lavender14 · 25/09/2024 16:53

I think you know we all want the spooky details of what you've experienced that's put you off op!! I love a good spooky tale!

I think if you really think it's scary then don't do it, or do it with friends and have fun with it. Personally I'm not sure what I believe but I wouldn't do it.

offyoujollywelltrot · 25/09/2024 16:54

Why did you leave at 3am?

loropianalover · 25/09/2024 16:54

EmilyRigby · 25/09/2024 15:47

shes desperate and can’t get anyone else that she trusts to do it

Are you going to answer any of the questions that people have?

HappierTimesAhead · 25/09/2024 16:56

Is she that Come down to the woods 'influencer' on Instagram who bought a house that she can't afford to renovate and realised after buying that it is creepy AF?

Boomer55 · 25/09/2024 16:57

Ghosts are only ever seen by those who believe in them lol 🙄

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 25/09/2024 17:09

I don't believe in ghosts either, and yet I've been haunted by one.

I spent 6 months spotting a figure out of the corner of my eye in my home who was always gone when I looked properly, and I found stuff in places it shouldn't be. Coincidentally (not!), it was also the most stressed out I've ever been in my life. My Mum was dying, work was being an epic clusterfuck and we were trying to sell the house.

There's also a pub near me that creeps me right out. I strongly dislike going there, despite there being absolutely no obvious reason for it.

What I'm trying to say is that ghosts aren't real, but that doesn't mean that your brain can't make you feel haunted anyway. Infrasound, damp and mould, the right pattern of light and other environmental factors can all produce feelings of dread in humans.

So no, you're not undreasonable to not want to stay somewhere that makes you feel uncomfortable @EmilyRigby , even though ghosts aren't real.

I'll do it!! I like talking to ghosts and closing self-opening kitchen drawers. I draw the line a knife-throwung poltergeists, but if she puts the knives away before she leaves, no problem.

Oh, and any and all dolls, teddies and toy clowns need to be removed from the property.

Sleep with the lights and TV on and you'll be fine.

Old rocking horse in a room I slept in! {Its nose}

He is quite a handsome wooden horse - a lot of old rocking horses are 'fiery' and built on Welsh type or Araby lines

Pluviophile1 · 25/09/2024 17:24

For £500 she could get a fully vetted 'professional' house sitter.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2024 17:26

Of course she could!

Most ''haunted houses'' aren't haunted, just unloved.

Some feel creepy because of their design.

There was a lovely grade 2 listed house mentioned on Mumsnet a few days ago - I thought that one had faintly eerie vibes.
Weaver's house.

Can't find the mumsnet link, but there is the house.

I spent part of my childhood in a house like that. So many odd things happened, pressure on the end of the bed like someone sitting down, feeling someone put a hand on your arm or shoulder, blue light bouncing down the stairs, whispering etc. It wasn't just our family that witnessed some of these things.

I've been in many other places that feel troubled or comfortable, I happily walked about an old building I worked in at night but many of my colleagues did not want to be left there. It did have an odd feel to it but nothing nasty.

I don't believe in ghosts but I do believe in Genius Loci, not necessarily as in an entity but as a feeling something is or is not right. as @VimesandhisCardboardBoots loads of scientific reasons why but it doesn't make you feel any better about it.

I loved Danny Robbin's series ''Uncanny''...Listened to them on dog walks.
He really tries to explain away reasons for 'hauntings'.

Infrasound is supposed to be an issue in Vaults in Edinburgh.

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/09/2024 17:43

There is a room in a castle near me that is supposed to be haunted. They had to close it as they had loads of people having funny turns in there.

I dont believe in ghosts per se but I do think that bad energy can linger and leave an imprint. A friend looked at a house when she was looking to move areas. Perfect on paper and a bargain. She got a really weird feeling in the house, it totally freaked her out but she cant say why. Turned out it had been on the market for several years as an abusive man had killed his wife and kids in there. She didnt know that when she viewed and obviously the estate agent wasnt going to tell her.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 25/09/2024 17:45

500 quid?
I'll bloody do it 😁

indecisivewoman81 · 25/09/2024 17:46

What sort of things have happened at the house? You could buy some sage and burn it in each room.

I'm sure there would be lots of people who would love to stay in a haunted house!

You know we all need the details to advise you !!! Spill the beans !
