F**king hats in restaurants

TomAllenWife · 22/09/2024 13:15

Is my new irritation!!!!

Stayed at a naive hotel last night, at breakfast this morning, two separate men wearing caps for in the restaurant .

On holiday in the summer (boiling hot) men had to wear long trousers for dinner, no shorts, but you could turn up in a baseball cap 🤔

When did this become acceptable?
I resist the urge to knock it off their heads?
I don't know why it makes me so irrationally angry either (peri)

Is it just me?

Some hats look great, really stylish. Baseball caps never do, in my opinion.

I'm also old enough to remember when it was considered bad manners for a man to keep his hat on indoors.

SplendidUtterly · 22/09/2024 15:19

It's to do with their hairline or a bald spot. Nothing to get worked up about.

Shannith · 22/09/2024 15:19

You are clearly not dining with the right set.

My verrrr horsey lot wear baseball caps most days, all year round, including at terribly naice places. Have breakfast at Burghley or Badminton or indeed any horse trials. Your pearls would be a clutched.

Probably polo players, eventers or showjumpers.

It's rude! It's scruffy!

And not appropriate indoors for a meal

I'm sick of everyone having an excuse for everything, DH had a hair transplant and still managed to eat in restaurants without a hat

Good for him.

But many who lose their hair for a variety of reasons don't feel that way.

Allfur · 22/09/2024 15:21

Are turbans and skull caps ok?

I just read bits of this thread and was overwhelmed by a feeling of utter futility. What a waste of time getting worked up about stuff like this and then encouraging people to read about it and waste their Sundays… when they could be doing something constructive!

This sums up MN, really. Grin

Doubtful.

The OP says she's fed up of people having an excuse for everything (despite using being 'peri' as an excuse for herself).

@cariadlet @TomAllenWife
A baseball cap would irritate me but only because I have an irrational hatred of them,

Baseball caps are acceptable on a sports field or on young people. There are a certain type of adult men who wear baseball caps for a youthful appeal. It's well known and no man over the age of 30 is well advised to wear a baseball cap other than when playing sports unless they want people to be a bit 😬

Christ get a life. How miserable.

Watch this OP - she gets you.

I hate baseball caps too, and trackie bottoms and football shirts, but I'm probably just stuck up (or have standards).

Why is it rude?

Genuinely baffled that keeping a hat on when eating in a restaurant could be considered rude. How does it affect anyone else?

Letting kids run around a restaurant - rude
Talking loudly on your phone - rude
Spitting out your food - rude
Being obnoxious to serving staff - rude
Making audible comments about other diners - rude

Wearing a hat?????

Or delusions that you somehow look better in what you choose to wear.

Putting · 22/09/2024 15:27

I’d much prefer to see people wearing hats than the crochet “cover ups” over thong bikinis that half the women seemed to be wearing to breakfast when I was on holiday a couple of weeks back.

KingscoteStaff · 22/09/2024 15:27

Hats on chaps indoors is v non-U.

Wearing a hat?????

Traditional etiquette. Gentlemen don't wear hats indoors, ladies can (apparently).

Seems very outdated nowadays.

I think you need to find a hobby OP 🤣 I’m going to wear my hat out to breakfast this week in honour of you

Noodlehen · 22/09/2024 15:34

Wearing hats are rude and scruffy, but swearing in titles and not proof reading your text isn’t?

I would argue swearing (even more so ridiculous asterisked swearing like you’re 12) is quite rude, and that not proof reading text displays quite scruffy behaviour.

But then again, I’m not high society and would probably wear a hoody for breakfast in a hotel.

Words · 22/09/2024 15:34

Baseball caps are just awful. Inside or outside. But especially inside - height of rudeness.

merrymelodies · 22/09/2024 15:35

It was considered extremely rude to wear a hat in a restaurant but I suppose that's fallen by the wayside.

IceStationZebra · 22/09/2024 15:36

Hats like baseball caps are part of an outfit, rather than outdoor clothing like a fedora or a bowler hat or whatever.

I cannot imagine getting worked up about this, especially with no other reason than “it’s rude!!!11” by which you mean “it wouldn’t have been acceptable at the Savoy in 1947”.

I only wear a baseball cap for running in the rain or bright sunshine but am tempted to do it more often if it upsets people

JessicassLavalier · 22/09/2024 15:37

@Thistooshallpass24

Older men with a sexual interest in young boys and young girls are well known for wearing baseball caps. They think it makes them look youthful. Gary Glitter. Jonathan King. Jimmy Savile. Literally anyone you can think of will those crimes to their name is well known for wearing a baseball cap. It's a revolting symbol of trying to present as youthful when you are not.

CoffeeCantata · 22/09/2024 15:37

Clothing, for me, sets a tone. Of course people are usually free to wear what they like - I'm not arguing about whether they have the right to wear baseball caps - unless a dress code is specified.

But I hate them - they just make everyone look stupid. And when they're worn back-to-front....oh God. I feel the same about football shirts worn by 'civilians' all over the place too.

Sorry - but the OP has asked for opinions and these are mine! 😃 I'm sure my much more traditional choices would wind other people up.

Itsgettingbettetman · 22/09/2024 15:37

Long trousers in restaurants is a load of bollocks, smart shorts should be accepted.

I don't care if people wear hats in doors, personally I wouldn't as I think it's bad luck, but these ridiculous rules around long trousers in hot countries are ridiculous.

Women are allowed to wear dresses and skirts so why can men not wear shorts?

Surely that's quite a broad assumption?
