F**king hats in restaurants

TomAllenWife · 22/09/2024 13:15

Is my new irritation!!!!

Stayed at a naive hotel last night, at breakfast this morning, two separate men wearing caps for in the restaurant .

On holiday in the summer (boiling hot) men had to wear long trousers for dinner, no shorts, but you could turn up in a baseball cap 🤔

When did this become acceptable?
I resist the urge to knock it off their heads?
I don't know why it makes me so irrationally angry either (peri)

Is it just me?

Yabu. It's a piece of clothing, however I have a family member who wears a hat all the time even inside as suffers from glare from lights and sun and has eye problems. They can't drive due to it. The shade from a hat stops the glare. They get severe headaches and can't see without wearing a hat, even inside

readysteadynono · 22/09/2024 14:50

I think this is an etiquette thing from the 1900s that never came into the 2000s.

notprincehamlet · 22/09/2024 14:51

I'm usually too busy starting fires in the self-service toaster thing to notice what's happening on other people's heads. But then I only stay in hotels with a thousand yard stare.

Apolloneuro · 22/09/2024 14:53

What is a naive hotel?

Deftandglory · 22/09/2024 14:55

I hate it too Op. Probably fine in a fast food place I mean why bother with a dress code at all really. What's the difference between wearing shorts or trousers.

I don't think money has much to do with it. Rich people can be twats as much as poor people..

😂 😂 😂

SlashBeef · 22/09/2024 14:56

I can't stand the trend of "I'm peri-menopausal so it's okay that I'm an intolerant twat".
Just stay home if life offends you this much.

Autumnchilltime · 22/09/2024 14:57

You're not being unreasonable, op. Gentleman don't wear hats indoors: especially to eat. It's not complex, just manners

But how does it affect anyone?

Nellieinthebarn · 22/09/2024 14:58

As long as they are not butt naked, trying to chat to me, or making slurping noises when eating or drinking, I really don't care. I'd be more concerned over the quality and quantity of the breakfast to be honest.

A lot of other irrational things give me the rage though, so I can understand how you feel.

timeforanewmoniker · 22/09/2024 13:57

You'd lose it in the US, they wear caps and cowboy hats even in the most expensive restaurants.

I think it's for the best, it's really distracting when you're trying to eat and the spotlights are reflecting into your eyes from people's shiny bald noggins.

I absolutely love those cowboy hats. I was at Dallas airport last year going through security behind 2 cowboys with all the gear, boots, hats, they looked fantastic. I thought they'd have to remove their hats but no- maybe it's not the done thing to ask a cowboy to take off his hat!

And neither of these young men were bald and I find it unlikely that both had severe scarring needing a hat

More likely they are scruffy entitled Gen Zers

Entitled because they were hats in a restuarant?????? Wtf

I mean they certainly are entitled to wear what they want in a restaurant 🙄

PlummyPears · 22/09/2024 15:01

I just read bits of this thread and was overwhelmed by a feeling of utter futility. What a waste of time getting worked up about stuff like this and then encouraging people to read about it and waste their Sundays… when they could be doing something constructive!

80smonster · 22/09/2024 15:04

Baseball caps are fashionable. Think you need a Vogue subscription OP.

FiveDuckGyoza · 22/09/2024 15:04

I’m struggling to picture how they were using their hats to interfere in your meal. Scooping up your sauce with the brims? Pinching your potatoes and using them to carry their spoils back to their tables? Tossing them across the room so they landed on your wine bottle and prevented you from spotting there was still another glass left in it?

If you’re better able to describe how it affected you, I’m sure the owner of the establishment will be delighted to offer you some recompense for your terrible ordeal.

Natty13 · 22/09/2024 15:05

TomAllenWife · 22/09/2024 14:01

It's rude! It's scruffy!

And not appropriate indoors for a meal

I'm sick of everyone having an excuse for everything, DH had a hair transplant and still managed to eat in restaurants without a hat

You know, life gets a lot less stressful when you take the stick out your back passage and relax a bit.

Holliiday · 22/09/2024 15:06

Imagine being this stuck up and cranky for fucks sake.

JessicassLavalier · 22/09/2024 15:10

@cariadlet @TomAllenWife
A baseball cap would irritate me but only because I have an irrational hatred of them,

Baseball caps are acceptable on a sports field or on young people. There are a certain type of adult men who wear baseball caps for a youthful appeal. It's well known and no man over the age of 30 is well advised to wear a baseball cap other than when playing sports unless they want people to be a bit 😬

“I don't know why it makes me so irrationally angry either (peri)”

Would something this minor of bothered you so much before you were peri?

Yri · 22/09/2024 15:11

I’m a woman and I wear a hat pretty much all the time, either beanie or baseball including in restaurants etc, avert your eyes if it offends you so much, problem solved.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/09/2024 15:14

You'd hate my partner. He only takes his off for weddings and funerals 😂 he is sadly very self conscious of his bald spot which I couldn't care less about.

Nice bit of ageism OP. It's not scruffy it's just an arcane rule that Gen z recognizes has no reason to exist. It doesn't affect you in any way 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you sound entitled, wanting people to dress the way you want, or else 🙄 you’d have a field day with me, half my hair’s fallen out after having a baby so I’m planning on wearing a beret inside and out until spring!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/09/2024 15:17

And my partner has not long turned 30 and he has a bald spot!
