To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Are you referring to Crawley - snooty, really? I though you may be describing Horsham oraube Lewes but I've never heard anyone describe Crawley as anything other than

What made you think they were referring to Crawley? And the idea that Horsham is snooty - have you been to Roffey? That’s Horsham. And Lewes is in East Sussex, unlike Crawley and Horsham. Weird post.

What a goady pile of shit.
does the op not realise how big “Sussex “ is

LuluBlakey1 · 19/09/2024 17:52

Northumberland is much worse. Please avoid it at all costs OP. Never come here.

As the OP described it pages back as being literally next to Horsham. Horsham is very middle England and very Conservative but also attractive. I know that Lewes is East Sussex and? Hardly weird.

What wonderful family history you have - there's some lovely prints and engravings of the fishing community from that era in the map room at the jubilee library

Thank you! I'll have to take a look.
We don't have much in the way of photographic family records, but a strong storytelling tradition. I think the older generations were generally gifted at it. I could listen to them for hours.

I was exiled to Yorkshire for 20 years.
Sussex would have been utopia. 😂

No they didn’t - I just checked - unless deleted?

I know Horsham I went to school there. Yes it is rampant blue. Semi attractive, it’s hardly a national park.

You seemed to lump in Lewes with West Sussex and then barely finished your post… so, yeah, weird.

Why's that, then?

anxioussister · 19/09/2024 18:04

Just adding my own Sussex-dwelling voice to the choir - I, too, am dreadful.

It is oft remarked that I have an unusually haughty demeanour for a former football hooligan (I prefer ‘dormant’ to ‘former’ - I may yet rise to hool again, haven’t ruled it out)

How can someone with so many union-jack tattoos look down their nose so aggressively? It’s a craft I will never cease refining. My Magnum opus.

Happy to answer any further questions you might have on behalf of every single resident of both East and West Sussex.

Isn't Yorkshire - "God's own country"?

I’m from sussex so I must be awful,🙄🙄

Skipsurvey · 19/09/2024 18:08

i lived in east sussex and in the 1980s/90s there were definately sussex accents in the local village pubs

For some reason I saw your post and started singing "Parklife".

Even though everyone from Sussex is snooty according to the OPs.

Edited

You're right actually I mixed the OP up with another poster.

I just assumed somewhere like Horsham as I equate snootiness with a conservative and middle England outlook. I only stated that it is attractive as I didn't want to offend, I don't think it is anywhere close to 'National Park' levels of beauty.

I thought the OP referred to Sussex so this is why I referred to Lewes I was trying to think of places that people may perceive as stuck up. I didn't say West Sussex, I named two West Sussex places and then one East Sussex but it isn't weird as it is about snootiness perceptions which I thought the OP was suggesting.

I wonder which bit you’re in @whatistheworld. There are definitely a few Brexity pensioners about but I assume they exist everywhere since Brexit voters were in the majority! I know hardly any religious people here though (and those I do know are elderly, which- again- is probably the pattern nationally).

In Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol and Edinburgh there are many fewer Brexity pensioners I believe.

You are excellent at sustained sarcasm! Are you a fellow teacher by any chance.

@Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit
I'm afraid not, I wasn't bright enough to become a teacher.

They/You do a fantastic job.

Oh Captain, my Captain.

We are all uniformly dreadful in my part of Sussex, but I always put it in part down to our proximity to Kent. (I'd hate for any Kentish Maids or Maids of Kent to feel left out of this).

There are universities in Sussex as well.

One of them used to have lots of protestors back in the day.

That makes sense- but those are all cities so can’t really be compared to Sussex as a whole. As pointed out earlier, Brighton- which is the biggest city in Sussex as a whole- voted overwhelmingly in favour of Remain. Rural areas near those cities you mentioned would likely have had fewer remainers.

Crispyturtle · 19/09/2024 19:05

I went to uni with a really fit bloke from Sussex, 20 years on I’m still gutted I never snogged him. He was really nice too, so YABU.

everything, there is nothing at all that I like about the West Midlands. Hence why I haven’t ever been back 😂

There's an old saying of my dad's that I think may be pertinent here:

"If you met one arsehole today, very well, you met an arsehole. If you meet arseholes all day every day....then you need to consider the possibility that you, in fact, are the arsehole."

Nailed it.
