To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Theresa May is from there.
My MIL is from there.
There was a Nazi finishing school there.

So that's all the evidence you need.

Dorking isn't in Sussex - it's in Surrey. We are so awful we are being accused for stealing towns from Kent and Surrey. Typical of us lot really!

It's the ancient kingdom of Mercia expanding it's borders by stealth again

My DJ was Sussex born and bred, and you could mostly hear the burr in his voice if you were speaking to him on the phone.

Josephinesnapoleon · 19/09/2024 17:21

Wow. 2 million people in Sussex the vast majority the op deems as awful. 😂😂😂😂

JFDIYOLO · 19/09/2024 17:22

Could it possibly be that wherever you go you meet people who react to ... you?

That's lovely! My Nana was the same.
Brighton fishing families, all married into each other over the generations.
My Nana used to help her Dad and Uncles selling fresh fish from the Arches on the seafront. The fish market had been there for centuries.
She told some amazing stories about her life!

What wonderful family history you have - there's some lovely prints and engravings of the fishing community from that era in the map room at the jubilee library

I've just moved from Kent to Dorking. I literally hate it, the atmosphere is thick. I imagine I'll come home one night and find the neighbours sacrificing Barry from no. 54 on the lawn. Its like a Hot Fuzz/Midwitch Cuckoos type thing.

Sussex is a big place though, it can't all be like this?

How can you not know you live in Surrey 😂😂😂

newnamethanks · 19/09/2024 17:23

You are obviously disorientated OP and have slipped into Essex by mistake.

Baneofmyexistence · 19/09/2024 17:25

What is it with all the mental threads this afternoon? Checking if teachers open their curtains in the morning, every single person in Sussex is rude, people surprised that a rough bit of Manchester is in fact rough 😂

How lovely - 'modern' sussex accents aren't unpleasant but the burr is sadly almost gone

It's a large county the coast (excluding Brighton) has the best people 😎

Agree!

I’m truly horrific. I was lovely when I lived in Buckinghamshire though. I had a personality transplant when we were following the removals lorry round the M25.

I moved down here via Buckinghamshire. I found people in the area of Bucks I lived to be very cold, (I come from the warm, friendly Midlands)

Moved down to Sussex and found my warm friendly people again

GoingDownLikeBHS · 19/09/2024 17:35

i didn’t clock on till about 5 minutes after posting that this discussion is about Sussex not Surrey but I think I’ll let it stand for comedy value and because I have no shame.

GoingDownLikeBHS · 19/09/2024 17:37

@OneTC sorry you didn’t see the funny side of my Surrey/Sussex cock up - are you from Dorking by any chance?!

No I'm from Croydon via Sussex, maybe I'm finally awful enough to be allowed back

Kent people are definitely not racist

Are you having a laugh?!?!?! We bought a house in Kent last year and were horrified when our neighbours introduced themselves saying how happy they are we are white as so many other colours had viewed it. Not racist my arse.
Stop stereotyping. You sound like a cunt 😁

So ageist and anti working class.

You charmer, OP. Please don’t come back to Sussex - we don’t need your judgmental type here

1Strawberrycat · 19/09/2024 17:45

I would imagine the snooty people of Sussex (of which I am one) easily saw you coming. We don't suffer fools gladly.

Is it because you don't like certain Northern accents?

Goldenbear · 19/09/2024 17:46

iambeyonddone · 19/09/2024 16:03

People need to have spend a good amount of time there to understand it - Rude, snooty, stuck-up, are all very good ways to describe the majority. They almost come across socially awkward because of it!😂

'unjustified arrogance' for a lot of reasons is how I could describe them

Are you referring to Crawley - snooty, really? I though you may be describing Horsham oraube Lewes but I've never heard anyone describe Crawley as anything other than

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/09/2024 17:47

The Sussex burr accent was still there in 80s because when as kids we holidayed in a cottage near Bodiam Castle owned by a farming family who ended up producing Hoads Farm Eggs.

Purplebunnie · 19/09/2024 17:48

Waitingfordoggo · 19/09/2024 17:06

I wonder which bit you’re in @whatistheworld. There are definitely a few Brexity pensioners about but I assume they exist everywhere since Brexit voters were in the majority! I know hardly any religious people here though (and those I do know are elderly, which- again- is probably the pattern nationally).

I thought we burnt religious people or am I not supposed to say that
