To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Probably the people you meet have slipped over the border from Hampshire (yokels) or Kent (racists).

Kent people are definitely not racist

St Mary's Bay, Dymchurch, Hythe and Canterbury are all in Kent so probably aren't full of truly awful people.

Are they?! Well Rye is in Sussex.

My grandfather was proper Sussex (and several generations before him too- farming folk) and he had a hint of that accent. It’s a shame it’s died out now.

It is a shame it's died with that generation - the guy I knew came from a small village not far inland from Hastings and had moved to brighton in later life - so like you say more of a traditional rural sussex accent

Kent = Ukipland in my estimation

I know (East Sussex actually) that why I didn't list it as being in Kent.

Mmm...

Some of them definitely are.

Of course you are being unreasonable - not everyone in Sussex is the same!

I live in Sussex and moved here 25 years ago from Bucks and yes I would agree that on the whole they are a weird bunch in Sussex. Heavily religious, sanctimonious and there is definitely a Brexit voting type of male pensioner. Entitled, sexist and rude.
Not really sure why I stayed to be honest

You a rare breed indeed so few left

Used to know a very elderly man from brighton [in his mid 90s] from a long established family and he had a completely different accent - almost a west country burr which was apparently the original Sussex accent before it was diluted by incomers

Lovely man full of wisdom and humour

That's lovely! My Nana was the same.
Brighton fishing families, all married into each other over the generations.
My Nana used to help her Dad and Uncles selling fresh fish from the Arches on the seafront. The fish market had been there for centuries.
She told some amazing stories about her life!

Waitingfordoggo · 19/09/2024 17:06

I wonder which bit you’re in @whatistheworld. There are definitely a few Brexity pensioners about but I assume they exist everywhere since Brexit voters were in the majority! I know hardly any religious people here though (and those I do know are elderly, which- again- is probably the pattern nationally).

Leah5678 · 19/09/2024 17:07

It's a large county the coast (excluding Brighton) has the best people 😎

luckylavender · 19/09/2024 17:07

This is so strange. Manchester is one of my favourite places in the world. Went to Uni there & DS lives there. And now I live in Sussex. I'm going to start a place bashing thread.

Well I'm in Sussex and I'm awful! So you could be right.
My Sussex town is very friendly - my northern mother, from a famously friendly chatty part of the country, always comments on how nice people are here.

Which town is this if you don’t mind saying? I am looking for friendly places.

RisingSunn · 19/09/2024 15:41

The only area that I’ve heard negative stories about is St Leonard’s on Sea. Mainly racism - in schools/shops etc.

But the town is obviously a small part of Sussex. (East?)

Edited

Do t know where you have heard this from. I am from a stereotypically friendly area of the country and lived here for over 10 years and found it to be friendly.

Arlanymor · 19/09/2024 17:09

Some of this thread is nuts - racist people are everywhere, in every town and village across the UK (sadly), as are miserable people, misanthropic people, unkind people, unfriendly people. It’s not tied to a place, it’s within the person. I’ve lived in a fair few places in my life and have always managed to seek out the good and not the bad folk. No one place is bad or good, the people too.

Means sectarian imo

LizzieLazzie · 19/09/2024 17:10

My son lives in Sussex and I’ve always found people there welcoming and friendly. Speaking as a northerner who comes from a very friendly and chatty county myself.

GoingDownLikeBHS · 19/09/2024 17:11

I've just moved from Kent to Dorking. I literally hate it, the atmosphere is thick. I imagine I'll come home one night and find the neighbours sacrificing Barry from no. 54 on the lawn. Its like a Hot Fuzz/Midwitch Cuckoos type thing.

Sussex is a big place though, it can't all be like this?

Ahh you moved to the religious part of Sussex.

I've been warned about it. 😁

You can have shitty neighbours anywhere you live.

Also people in the same family can treat you very differently.

Efacsen · 19/09/2024 17:13

Brighton had the highest % of remain votes in the UK ?68% but has a completely different demographic profile to the rest of sussex and probably the UK as whole - with fewer older people and more young people

But brightonian elders can be super-brexity - see the comment section of the argus where they fulminate en masse

Isn’t Dorking in Surrey?

Dorking isn't in Sussex - it's in Surrey. We are so awful we are being accused for stealing towns from Kent and Surrey. Typical of us lot really!

Not all of them but there are plenty of racists in Kent. Just like not all of the people in East and West Sussex are awful. I'm an absolute fucking nightmare but most of the people in my lovely seaside town are total darlings.

flamethrowerofdoom · 19/09/2024 17:17

Well, I live in Brighton (East Sussex) and people here are lovely and accepting.

I'm very proud of my city and the way they outnumbered the far right protests recently by thousands. In fact, the few far right people had to be escorted out of town in a police van 😂
