To think The Range has made a stupid decision

CDS Superstores has announced a major change to The Range stores' entry requirements. Dog owners will no longer need to leave their pets outside or at home as stores across the UK are now completely dog-friendly.“

What’s the point of this other than to make shopping in The Range a miserable experience? Am I the only one who thinks it’s disgusting to have filthy dogs running around soft furnishings and fragile displays, potentially pissing on things? I assume people with dog allergies are just irrelevant then. Navigating the shop is already a nightmare when it’s busy, who wants dogs who have been rolling around in God knows what to be taking up the aisles? Think it’ll be online orders only from now on… Hmm

Doesn't remotely bother me and I have never had a dog but would worry about a wagging tail knocking breakable stuff over 🤣

TopBunk · 18/09/2024 01:18

I'm amazed how many people flout the "no dogs on this beach" rule. We went to the beach the other day- lovely warm day up in Saltburn 😂 but loads of dogs off the lead running up to us despite signs saying no dogs on this beach before 30th September, fine £1000.
Why would anyone run the risk of a £1000 fine? Is it that it's not enforced?

I went to the beach the other day and there was a big sign on the beach saying no dogs on the beach and a dog sitting on the beach right next to the sign 😂 The owner had the dog on a lead and was sitting with it while she was watching her kids play so I don’t know if she thought she just wasn’t allowed to walk the dog on the beach but it could sit with them, she somehow missed the big, bright yellow sign or she just didn’t care.

I work for Costa, the company has recently started allowing dogs into the cafe. It's awful!
The noise, the mess, the smell, the customers complaining about the dogs, the dog owners entitlement. Some have put dogs onto chairs and even tables. They kick off if we tell them to put them onto the floor. Honestly it's awful

John Lewis has allowed dogs for years. I've never seen one slobbering over the soft furnishings.

No. The dog owners should have been more attentive here. If a child had an accident and peed on the floor it would be the parents’ responsibility to clear it up or alert staff, just as it’s dog owners responsibility to do the same if their dog pees on the floor. Quite simple really.

You are assuming the dogs owner wasn’t already on their way to report it. Now if the child’s parent knew it was urine & still let them walk through it who is to blame? Accidents are just that, accidents. not on purposes.

You seen so defensive about this, really creepy.

Deflecting, you still haven’t answered the question. Creepy what a weird thing to say.

Meanwhile in the real world, Mumsnet aibu votes and comments are not legally binding and despite all the many tantrums here over dogs being allowed in stores, this has been shown to increase profits. It's entirely up to the shop if they allow them in and taking your dog somewhere it's allowed to be isn't entitled behaviour. Pretty much every dog I've seen out and about has behaved fine.

But it's not in the dogs best interests to be dragged around shops. Take the dog for a proper walk then leave it at home while you shop

So OP, you quite clearly do not like dogs that is clear. However not all dogs are filthy and those people with allergies will have had to deal with service dogs which have always been allowed in any shop or business.

Tha Range have made a commercial decision, you can make a decision as to if you shop there or not.

The number of genuine service dogs is quite small. I can go weeks without seeing a guide dog. How can you say ‘well, you’ve got to deal with service dogs so you can deal with a shop that lets all dogs in’?

And the Range have made a decision that results in some people being excluded from going to their shop, or having a less pleasant shopping experience, so that they can please the vocal and demanding dog-owning community. Is that ok? I don’t think so.

cookiebee · 17/09/2024 14:48

WHAT, I pay my bloody pension, how the hell do you think pensions work, do all the unborn kids pay it from their future pocket money, you just sound bitter!

Are you serious? Yes, the unborn kids (or current kids/teenagers/young/adults etc, depending how old you are) will be paying the pensions of the time from their taxes.

If you pay tax now, you’re funding the pensions being paid out now.

And please don’t compare dogs to human children. It’s ridiculous and offensive.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 18/09/2024 07:07

schloss · 17/09/2024 21:18

Except that would not please the people on this thread who say they cannot go anywhere a dog has been, so blind people should not be allowed to take their dogs in a shop.

Please show where someone has said they want guide dogs out of shops. I’ve seen people explicitly say that no dogs except guide dogs should be allowed.
Don’t make things up.

I was walking around a shop the other day, an actual grown man walked it front of me and decided to full on put his hand down the back of his trousers for a rummage about. Lovely, I thought.
Once he'd rearranged himself and took his hand out of his pants, I realised that his underwear was absolutely covered in shite.

I left the shop without buying anything.

I'd rather share a shop space with a toilet trained dog than that man - but the truth is we actually have no idea who has touched the products we buy before we do, dog free shop or not.

I’ve seen so many disgusting things in shops, not even bad behaviour, just genuinely disgustingly unhygienic things, that I’m actually surprised anyone made it through Covid.

Fair enough, but I’m not the one who started a thread designed to accumulate hateful posts about one group of people for no other reason than they probably love ganging up on others and finding similar people to help with that. It’s natural to retaliate if people step out side of a live and let live way of thinking, leave me alone and whatever life has given me and il do the same. Have an issue with company policy, take it up with the company, not think let’s all say nasty things about something others have.

You used to be able to Leave dogs tied up outside and you can't anymore safely (well you can where I live) but being able to combine a walk with nipping* to the shops. Is handy.

But I do raise my eyes at people taking their dogs to Liverpool One and wandering around John Lewis....

I did this yesterday - popped to the butchers, tied dog outside, ordered what I wanted, and then stood in the doorway whilst it was being prepared so I could see dog and he could see me.

I'm not sure if I'd ever take him in to a shop. Maybe if I needed one thing and I knew where that one thing was I would, but certainly not for a browse.

Doesn't bother me when others do, as long as the dog is well behaved.

Ranges are normally in out of town stores. All places that let in dogs( restaurants, charges, shops…) have a caveat that they need to be well behaved. Our dog gets 2 walks a day and goes on errands as doesn’t like to be left at home. Being able to pop into a Range with our well behaved dog on a lead is in its best interest and hurts nobody.

Some people like to froth over anything dog related. Businesses make their own decisions based on profit. Range will have seen the growing trend for dog owners to choose businesses that are dog friendly. Thankyou OP for the heads up. It will be really helpful for me to know I can pop into Range with our dog as opposed to leaving her at home and going to an alternative business.

sharpclawedkitten · 18/09/2024 08:38

Businesses make their own decisions based on profit

To an extent, but also based on (s)he who shouts loudest.

Some dog owners complain constantly about not being able to take their dogs everywhere. Businesses will capitulate for a quiet life. It's not (just) about profits.

An example would be a cafe which is dog-free inside, and has a covered terrace outside where dogs are welcome. But still the dog owners complain. I fully expect that cafe to capitulate and allow them in at some point. Although some cafes are dog-free and always full. It would be good if cafes in a town would talk to each other and agree an approach so all types of customer are accommodated.

sharpclawedkitten · 18/09/2024 08:39

the point is that many dogs are not well behaved and staff won't do anything because they don't want to be abused and because they know they won't be supported by management. Same goes for other bad behaviour as well like playing Peppa Pig on full volume.

They really don’t. Profit comes first with any business particularly at the moment.

Rubbish. A dog on a lead can do very little as regards bad behaviour( unlike children left to roam). Restaurants, stores, service stations etc have rules. A dog running amok off a lead is going to be asked to leave. I’ve never seen one off a lead or badly behaved unlike badly behaved children which is a daily occurrence.

Toddlers don't shit on the floor normally and don't slabber over products.

They do scream and run around though.

BigDahliaFan · 18/09/2024 10:27

Was in a motorway service station the other day and someone bought their dog in as they needed to use the loos and asked me to hold it while they nipped in. They didn't want to leave in the car as it was hot and no shade. I didn't mind.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 18/09/2024 13:17

@Catpuss66 I never said he walked through any of it. I'm attentive of my child, not like the disgusting dog owners that leave the piss all over the floors without notifying anyone that their untrained dog needs cleaning up after.

Why comment just to be nasty? (And wrong).

My mum owns 8 dogs and none have ever pissed where they shouldn't. Neither has my 2yr old before you make another pointless nasty comment.
