To think The Range has made a stupid decision

CDS Superstores has announced a major change to The Range stores' entry requirements. Dog owners will no longer need to leave their pets outside or at home as stores across the UK are now completely dog-friendly.“

What’s the point of this other than to make shopping in The Range a miserable experience? Am I the only one who thinks it’s disgusting to have filthy dogs running around soft furnishings and fragile displays, potentially pissing on things? I assume people with dog allergies are just irrelevant then. Navigating the shop is already a nightmare when it’s busy, who wants dogs who have been rolling around in God knows what to be taking up the aisles? Think it’ll be online orders only from now on… Hmm

They also tend to mean well behaved dogs on leads, if a dog was aggressive or hyper and making a mess, you would likely be told to leave, same as if you had a messy badly behaved child.

Staff don't because they know they won't be supported by management.

A bit like noisy kids in restaurants (and I know I've compared dogs with kids, sorry).

I live in quite an aspirational middle class area. Dogs are just another thing to add to the long list of things to show off, and show off about.

They are expensive to keep.

So do I. I know people with all kinds of dogs and all kinds of cars. They have them because they love them (dogs) and they like them and/or meet their needs (cars).

I know some people who use their car as a status symbol. I know no people who use their dog as one. There's a lot of people walking dogs on the same schedule as me and they're all much loved pets, many of which are rescues. Nothing to do with showing off.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 17/09/2024 17:30

@sharpclawedkitten they are expensive to keep - but I see my monthly outgoings towards my dogs upkeep as more bloody fool me, rather than 'look what I can spend on my dog'

@Allfur I have a poodle cross (not with a cocker spaniel though) and a car that costs the same as a Range Rover. I see absolutely neither of those things as a status symbol. Ones a means to get around, and the other is my little four legged mate.

Tbh, although comparing children and dogs normally gets you a kicking, the entitled attitude is the same when it comes to both with some people.

The child or dog is just an extension of the self and therefore fall under the entitled 'I shall have what I want' attitude.

And I'm middle management and absolutely support my staff when they ask people to behave appropriately in areas where other people are, or ensure a child or dog with them does. And the management above me does the same.

Unfortunately there's zero respect for people in service positions in general, management or not and at best we're ignored, at worst subject to verbal abuse and on occasion threats of or actual physical violence.
And then a barrage of complaints that other people's experience has been ruined by the offending people who've caused a scene and blames the staff for it all.
It's a societal issue, the entitlement of 'I shall have and do what I want and bully anyone who tries to change that', so of course it spills out into places where people gather together like food & drink outlets and shops.

But while we're a society where it's acceptable to have little to no respect for anyone in a service position, it's pretty unrealistic to expect that they'll be effective in modifying other people's behaviour.

Went in pets at home last week and there was dog piss everywhere. One of the poor staff was out with a mop but every edge of the display shelves had puddles around them. Doesn't seem like the owners actually tell anyone, they just walk away and leave someone to slip in it. My 2yr old almost slipped in a couple of puddles and I couldn't wait to get out of there.

Maybe you should have been more attentive to your 2yr old walking through dog wee.

Balloonhearts · 17/09/2024 00:18

Meh. They're no more disgusting than toddlers so I really can't get too worked up tbh.

Toddlers don’t typically roll in fox shit , bite/chew things, have their bare arses out and wee and poo on the floor (well unless they aren’t properly supervised !)

No. The dog owners should have been more attentive here. If a child had an accident and peed on the floor it would be the parents’ responsibility to clear it up or alert staff, just as it’s dog owners responsibility to do the same if their dog pees on the floor. Quite simple really.

If a cafe is kind enough to welcome dogs surely the owners should be kind enough to make sure their dog is house trained? I’ve never had a dog but surely people don’t just let their dogs pee all over the place in their own homes do they…? 🤔

No, nor do the pee all over cafés either. I'm not a dog owner now, although grew up with dogs. The hyperbole and exaggeration on this thread is ridiculous.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 17/09/2024 18:25

I'm disappointed

despite 'dogs being allowed everywhere
I rarely see one 'in the wild'. Occasionally in a local pub or outside a cafe, but I've yet to see one in a clothes or furnishings shop. 🥲🥲

i dog sit, but wouldn't take my more regular ones inside a barn, let alone soft furnishings. They'd be on the beds snoring in nano seconds. Georgeous, but 'trained' they're not!

my old girl (spaniel) would have loved it. She enjoyed a good snoop about and any passing fuss, unbothered by lights & chaos.

I miss her.

Cherrysoup · 17/09/2024 18:45

Dog owner too, wouldn’t dream of taking them! Bonkers idea.

ThatMakesSense · 17/09/2024 18:56

My dog would hate it. He comes into the pet shops as well....it's for pets! And yes - he has peed in there. And I clean it up and most pet store tills will have a spray behind the counter to clean up some more. Taking him into a regular store won't be nice for him and a nightmare for me.

Try Julie Naismith separation anxiety training. You have to put the work in but people do get results.

we are actually seeing a great vet recommended guy, we are only in the early stages of training but Thankyou! X

A lot of dogs do none of those things either. My dog's tail also covers her arsehole.
Why is it that people who hate dogs so much are fixated on their bums?

wastingtimeonhere · 17/09/2024 19:12

If you have ever worked in a bathroom showroom you would know that toddlers and not so small do piss and shit in shops. It's not an urban myth!

Skipsurvey · 17/09/2024 19:53

dogs can wee on outside shop displays,
if you are unlucky

Nn9011 · 17/09/2024 20:28

sharpclawedkitten · 17/09/2024 15:33

I've seen them in department stores and garden centres (the indoor bits). I think people do things because they can. Also, having a dog (or several) is a status symbol. Dogs are expensive. And of course you need the expensive SUV as well, so it's the whole well to do package. So you have to take the dog and the SUV shopping, even if you can walk to your local shop in 5 minutes.

Although I am not sure that fits in with the Range. John Lewis, sure.

Haha I don't know any SUV owners that shops in my range but that could be the local clientele rather than the shop in general 🤣

Cityandmakeup · 17/09/2024 20:38

Chavs just want their smelly dogs everywhere. Another reason to avoid the range

I have a dog, but am not a chav.
FFS, this is 2024. Do people even say 'chav' nowadays?

So sick of the cult of dog. When and where is this going to end?

My dogs don't wear lipsticks

veryexpensivetaste · 17/09/2024 20:56

What a ridiculous idea! I work in a small shop and we're dog friendly... a few weeks ago, someone brought puppies in and one did a wee on the sofa. The owner didn't even tell us. I love dogs but I think only guide dogs should be allowed in shops.

I am a little tired of the cult of bash every dog owner as irresponsible (and from this thread) a SUV driving chav
