To think The Range has made a stupid decision

CDS Superstores has announced a major change to The Range stores' entry requirements. Dog owners will no longer need to leave their pets outside or at home as stores across the UK are now completely dog-friendly.“

What’s the point of this other than to make shopping in The Range a miserable experience? Am I the only one who thinks it’s disgusting to have filthy dogs running around soft furnishings and fragile displays, potentially pissing on things? I assume people with dog allergies are just irrelevant then. Navigating the shop is already a nightmare when it’s busy, who wants dogs who have been rolling around in God knows what to be taking up the aisles? Think it’ll be online orders only from now on… Hmm

I have dogs but I also agree they shouldn't be in shops unless they are service or guide dogs. That said, is anyone actually taking them up on it other than for the novelty of it at the beginning?

Well same back at you when your kids approach adults in cafes and most of you just smile on sweetly thinking we want them babbling away to us. Also the population in the world is high enough without you all having to have two or three vanity projects otherwise known as your children!

Kids don't approach me in cafes. Maybe I just look like a miserable wotsit!

They don't generally bother me anywhere, unless they are screaming and giving everyone within a mile radius a headache.

However, many dogs approach people. And their owners do nothing. And that's what bothers people.

I've seen them in department stores and garden centres (the indoor bits). I think people do things because they can. Also, having a dog (or several) is a status symbol. Dogs are expensive. And of course you need the expensive SUV as well, so it's the whole well to do package. So you have to take the dog and the SUV shopping, even if you can walk to your local shop in 5 minutes.

Although I am not sure that fits in with the Range. John Lewis, sure.

cuckooooooo · 17/09/2024 15:33

My 4 year old DS wouldn't be babbling at a random adult. He wouldn't want to and we've brought him up better than that. Dogs have no control if they like the smell of your crotch.

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/09/2024 15:34

HRHelpNeededPlease · 17/09/2024 14:32

Well you'll have to resort to shopping online then I'm afraid, because increasingly it's something most chains and department stores are embracing. It's frankly quite daft though, to say you will refuse to frequent a particular shop if there's a chance a dog might have rubbed against the stock. There's a massively greater chance that no dog has been anywhere near it, but how will you ever know?

That's cutting off your nose to spite your face. If the stock looks clean and free of dog hair, mud, slobber and wee then it probably is clean and free of all those things.

I don’t have to resort to anything. I can choose to shop either online or in places that are dog free. Your tone is confrontational and quite unnecessary. The fact remains that the households without dogs are the majority.

I'm so fed up with everywhere becoming "dog friendly". It's ridiculous. In Tesco the other day and someone had this small out of control dog in there, it was trying to cock it's leg up stuff, was yapping and pulling the owner around sniffing everything. A member of staff told the lady she couldn't bring the dog in, and she said "it's a support dog in training" the staff memeebr asked for proof and she said she didn't legally have to show her that, and carried in around the shop causing a nuisance! The staff were clearly unhappy but obviously their hands were tied. I saw them moping the floor, and removing items from a shelf where I'm sure the dog had cocked it leg up it. Absolutely disgusting.

Just to come back to this, you absolutely can get rid of a "service" dog if it is clearly not behaving like one.

If it's out of control and peeing everywhere, it's not a service dog.

Even the EHRC guidance which says you can't ask for evidence, says that effectively you will know it's fine because it behaves itself. However, when it doesn't, it's a bit too late.

Also back in the day it used to be a selling point on ebay that things came from a pet- and smoke-free home!

Clearly there was some reason why being pet-free was a good thing.

That’s often added to local FB selling pages too.

Those “vanity projects” who go on to pay the taxes which fund dogshit bins, street cleaning, parks maintenance, police time wasted by dangerous dogs, as well as their owners future state pensions, NHS treatments, winter fuel allowance, free prescriptions, free bus passes etc. You’d materially miss them if they didn’t exist.

Unlike…dogs.

XenoBitch · 17/09/2024 15:48

I come back to this thread and it is people going on about pensions, FFS. Many people who have dogs, also have kids. The pet industry is worth billions, and employs hundreds of thousands of people... who are all paying the pensions of people what are retired now.

Why do these threads always seem to descend into vicious comments aimed at people who have dogs (and it is always the same posters too).
The dig about having dogs at funerals was totally uncalled for. You were not there, so why give a shit?

Yes, my rescue cross breed and my 18 year old estate car is definitely a status symbol. I take them both places so people can wish they had what I have....

@AngeloMysterioso

Plenty of dogs in churches, some cathedrals even have "canine vergers" to greet visitors. Don't have an issue with it myself. My ddog was the unofficial guard dog for my previous church (I worked there) as a key holder I attended the burglar alarm etc and I would take him too, came in handy as it was usually drug addicted homeless trying to get into the hall to sleep

How very Christian of you

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 17/09/2024 16:24

I don't know anyone who uses their dog as some kind of status symbol. Or car, actually.

I really must keep good company.

Yes the do! Male dogs cock their legs everywhere. I wouldn't want to buy anything near the ground if dogs are allowed in.

Not if they're trained not to.

I was in a cafe and a dog pee'd up against a plastic plant!
I love dogs and happy that some cafes are dog friendly etc but not ALL.

If a cafe is kind enough to welcome dogs surely the owners should be kind enough to make sure their dog is house trained? I’ve never had a dog but surely people don’t just let their dogs pee all over the place in their own homes do they…? 🤔

I saw plenty of dogs in supermarkets when in the US which was an equal culture shock.

I am pretty surprised dogs are in supermarkets in the USA unless they are service animals. Why? It is against the law. This is against the Food and Drug Administration laws to have dogs anywhere that serve or sell food. With few exceptions, live animals of any kind are not permitted on the premises of a grocery store, a restaurant or other food establishment. The prohibition applies to dogs, cats, birds and other animals. The law protects the national food supply from contamination from dog drool, urine, feces and other material that dogs carry on their coats and paws and might leave behind on store shelves or counters. Dogs can transmit roundworms to humans and fleas.

@cuckooooooo that really made me laugh. Mil has a godawful crocheted pillow with "your dog loves you when nobody else does" embroidered on there.

There's a reason for that. Hmm

My partners dog has had awful separation anxiety and has done since lockdown and when two family members died suddenly. We are shelling out for expensive trainers, and drugs, but it’s got to the point that our poor dog may have to be PTS if she is not sorted. Things like this letting us bring our dog in is a lifeline. They also tend to mean well behaved dogs on leads, if a dog was aggressive or hyper and making a mess, you would likely be told to leave, same as if you had a messy badly behaved child.

Try Julie Naismith separation anxiety training. You have to put the work in but people do get results.

I can barely face taking DD into The Range (or any shop for that matter) so no way would I take DDog shopping. Taking the both of them would end up with me rocking back and forth in a darkened room.

I live in quite an aspirational middle class area. Dogs are just another thing to add to the long list of things to show off, and show off about.

They are expensive to keep.
