No, the magistrate has given him enough get out of jail free cards to use in the future, as well as the big one he can use today.

mental health
pleaded guilty
suicide risk
cant remember images
did not store
did not distribute
remorse
loving family man
complicated family life/ relationships
relationship with father
low risk of re offending

Like I said, coming to a bookshop near you, not this year, but next year.

Don't be ridiculous. No agent or publisher will touch him with a bargepole.

He had access to top lawyers and is a remarkably astute and intelligent person. Your average Joe paedo wouldn’t have the same ability to know or be advised exactly how to face a judge in these circumstances. Let’s not pretend that special treatment doesn’t just come from the judge you stand before, there is a whole build up to come to a conclusion. If any common person had the balls to stand up in court and say ‘yes I had indecent pictures of a young child on my phone, but I don’t remember asking for them or colluding in buying more underage photos because of my poor mental health’, the judge would have thrown the book at them.

Joe paedo walks free week after week. My local papers report this all the time. If you think prisons are full of working class guys who plead guilty to having downloaded abuse images you are kidding yourself.

Fizbosshoes · 16/09/2024 13:01

He had no memory of looking at them??? 😳
Really?
(But messages suggested he was complicit in wanting to see more of them?)

I.E he's become immune to seeing these sick images so will hunt for even more disgusting photos 😡😡😡

Oh do stop it. These posts are completely over the top. He’s pleaded guilty and been sentenced in line with sentencing guidelines.

No, I won’t stop being repulsed by child sex offenders. The sentencing guidelines are wrong. The whole system is wrong. victims get the message that what’s happened to them isn’t that serious. Do you know any 7 year olds? Can you even imagine them being raped on demand and it being filmed for other scum to masturbate to? Do you understand what these images are?

Quite. And that wasn’t what you said @viques. You predicted an entire media circus of several months duration.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/09/2024 13:10

Is there anything that can’t be blamed on ‘mental health’?

If you’re a white man apparently not.

Hmmmmamilucky · 16/09/2024 13:17

I cannot actually believe he didn’t go to jail, but then this whole case has been eye opening as apparently peodophiles hardly ever go to prison for making images, even the most serious ones. I didn’t know this and definitely the sentencing guidelines should be changed. This will spark a debate surely?

There are absolutely average joe nonces who get the full one third discount for pleading guilty at the first opportunity. It's a way to try and persuade them not to put the victims through a trial.

Any trainee criminal solicitor on their first day after finishing law school would know about discounts for guilty pleas, it's extremely basic legal knowledge.

Which will also happen. Notoriety sells. Notoriety is click bait.

So if it had been your child who had been raped for his gratification you would be saying ‘great he got the right sentence’?

Let's hope so. Because this is a structural problem that needs addressing.

Doesn't matter. Doesn't make it right does it? Even the CPS graded him as a medium risk to reoffend but he's walked free. They are also concerned he would be vulnerable in prison.

No concern has been shown for the naked abused children in the images and videos that he enjoyed and paid for.

Still a repulsive crime whatever the mitigation and the judge has to take that into account when sentencing. I can’t imagine anyone buying a book written by him.

AncientAndModern1 · 16/09/2024 13:23

The man who sent Edwards the pictures and videos and seemed to have an endless supply of them only got a 12 month suspended sentence for making AND distributing so Edwards’ sentence is complete in line with the norm. You might very well think all child abuse images sentences are too light, but there’s no evidence that Edward’s sentence is particularly lenient. This offence seems depressingly common.

AncientAndModern1 · 16/09/2024 13:24

And no, he will not get a book deal. His career is completely finished.

Wheresthebeach · 16/09/2024 13:24

What the hell is wrong with our judicial system. Sex crimea are simply not punished properly. It’s almost like the sentencing guidelines were written by men of a certain..predilection

Abitofalark · 16/09/2024 13:25

A prominent local politician here, leader of the Council, got two years in prison for images as part of a network - different scale and numbers involved - but that was ten or more years ago. And he got further penalty for breach of conditions.

ilovesooty · 16/09/2024 13:26

LostTheMarble · 16/09/2024 13:05

Actually it is ‘special treatment’:

’The appropriate sentence would be 12 months for the most severe abuse images. However, taking into account the mitigation and early guilty plea, the sentence would be six months suspended for two years.’

From the BBC reporting. So by admitting to it then be-crying mental health, he’s swerved what was the guidelines for the more serious crimes he committed.

It's the same sentencing treatment as anyone else would get under the same circumstances. He hasn't received special treatment because of who he is.

Fairyliz · 16/09/2024 13:19

That is a cheap snd nasty shot and not what Blossomtoes said. She said he was sentenced within the guidelines. Which is the case, whether we like it or not.

MorrisZapp · 16/09/2024 13:28

I googled 'abuse images walks free' and found a never ending list of offenders with similar and much worse offences than HE getting suspended sentences.

I won't link any as they are upsetting to read.

Try googling abuse images vicar/abuse images doctor/abuse images teacher et etc if you want to feel completely depressed about the state of men

Gr8bolsoffyre · 16/09/2024 13:31

The UK would need to acquire its own Alcatraz if it were to house all those convicted of “making” indecent images in prison. It is absolutely rife. I bet everyone reading this thread has come into contact with at least one offender.

I’m absolutely not defending him but it’s not as simple as locking them all up. And capital punishment isn’t an option.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/09/2024 13:32

Discussion on the BBC just now (World at One) and lawyer interviewee said that the sentence given was in line with the guidelines. When he was asked about sentences given to e.g. climate activists, he said the sentencing for different crimes aren't compared, but are assessed separately.
I just can't believe HE got 'let off ' after receiving category A images of seven-yr-olds being abused. He received the pictures (and videos?) as 'gifts' and then immediately gave the sender gifts of cash in order to help with his student expenses. But he didn't pay for the images, apparently! It stinks, it really does. If it shows nothing else, it's that the sentencing guidelines need an urgent review.
