Does anyone seriously enjoy sourdough?

I just find the crust so tough and chewy. I always feel so undignified ripping a bite off like a wild animal, usually while the filling drops everywhere.

Posh, artisan type places seem to all love a bit of sourdough, I just don't get it. What am I missing?!!

It's my favourite

DustyLee123 · 14/09/2024 11:43

I’m not a fan either, it’s ok toasted with jam, but I couldn’t eat it as a sandwich

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 14/09/2024 11:43

No it's rank

Flashcardsagain · 14/09/2024 11:44

No it's...sour

AgainstRegulations · 14/09/2024 11:44

I’m not a fan either. I don’t mind it too much with soup but otherwise it’s too chewy and unpleasantly sour for my liking.

reesewithoutaspoon · 14/09/2024 11:44

Too chewy for a sandwich. Ok if toasted and has a topping like eggs benedict on it.

knittingdad · 14/09/2024 11:44

I very much love sourdough, yes.

Trainerstrainers · 14/09/2024 11:44

I like it but always toasted. I often find the stuff in restaurants etc is too hard vs what I buy in the shops

LlynTegid · 14/09/2024 11:45

It is to bread what Mrs Brown's Boys is to comedy. A mystery why anyone likes it or someone playing a practical joke.

DearGoldFish · 14/09/2024 11:45

love love love it

smashed avo smeared over it
topped with a poached egg
and chilli flakes

Wishimaywishimight · 14/09/2024 11:45

I love it served with a dish of garlic & chilli prawns, for mopping up the sauce 😋

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 14/09/2024 11:45

I love it when it’s incredibly fresh. Even after a few hours the same day it gets tough and chewy. I freshen it up in the oven to make it crispy/crunchy instead of tough on the outside and to keep the middle fluffy. Love the flavour of it, it’s so wholesome.

Teenagerantruns · 14/09/2024 11:46

No crusts are to hard and it doesn't taste nice to me...its everywhere here, l can just about cope with it toasted and with eggs on top...

yeesh · 14/09/2024 11:46

I really like it for toast but wouldn’t eat it untoasted, horrible texture.

SummerHouse · 14/09/2024 11:46

There is a time and a place for it. Toasted with loads of butter with scrambled eggs - yes I am down with it. I did make my own for a sad while and that was always very bad. Especially one time I forgot the salt and it was the essence of nothing. R.I.P starter dough.

lljkk · 14/09/2024 11:46

I used to but now I rather dislike it.

RandomMess · 14/09/2024 11:47

Hate the texture as it hurts my mouth.

ResultsMayVary · 14/09/2024 11:48

Sourdough is my favourite bread- I usually toast it. To me it has more flavour and I love how chewy it is.

Trainerstrainers · 14/09/2024 11:49

Different breads suit different fillings/toppings.

Heronwatcher · 14/09/2024 11:49

It’s my favourite too. I think it should normally be toasted/ grilled but I’ve got a local bakery which does a rosemary one which I will happily eat untoasted with some salty butter.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 14/09/2024 11:49

Oh god I love it. But I was raised in California on San Francisco sourdough (and King’s Hawaiian bread) so, there’s that. I don’t like how just our simple concept, that of the sourdough loaf, has evolved into some upmarket and artisan culinary delight that costs a million pounds a roll at Gail’s. It’s just bread. 😆

alpacachino · 14/09/2024 11:50

I love it toasted. But then I think about the whole yeast starter thing and it grosses me out

stopringingme · 14/09/2024 11:51

I only like it toasted

JassyRadlett · 14/09/2024 11:52

Love the flavour of a proper sourdough but the idea of using it for sandwiches doesn't really work for me. We usually only have sourdough at home and just don't have sandwiches - if we do we buy different bread but it's rare.

We mainly have it toasted but some local bakeries make lovely sourdough than when it's fresh is great in toasted with some butter, or with soup.

If your main use of bread is sandwiches I can see sourdough wouldn't be for you at all.

It’s pretty easy, cheap and straightforward to make, though.
