I’m planning a trip and I’m curious about people’s experiences with hotels. What’s the best hotel you’ve ever stayed out and what made it stand out? Whether it’s the service, location, amenities, or something else, I’d love to hear your top recommendations!

Lanis suites in Tenerife was lovely - great views and fabulous food

Is that not in lanzarote? I can't find it in Tenerife on booking.com

I've only ever stayed in two decent hotels. One in Barcelona, it was clean and four star with a mini bar, and a weird channel that played a gay porno scene set on a small boat on a loop.

The other was for my mates wedding. It was one of those country house hotels and she paid for me and my mum to stay there. Bed was really comfy but the breakfast buffet was shite, lol.

All other places I've stayed have been pretty hovel tastic backpacker style, one had no windows. One was a mattress in a bare boards attic shared with feral cats and about twenty other people. Most I think I don't remember tbh!

Sorry the Mena House hotel in Egypt.

Suprised at a few on here I’ve stayed at and wouldn’t massively rate. Where would I rate? Home House in London, private members club but non members can stay and the rooms are exquisite- each individually decorated. Fab service.
Kura in Costa Rica - amazing boutique hotel in remote location only 8 rooms and fantastic food service design everything.

Hotel Villarica in southern Chile. Beautiful location, also lovely decor. Rooms, food and service fabulous. This was nearly 20 years ago.

Depends on what the best entails. The Witchery in Edinburgh is amazing, as it is so unique, it also has an excellent restaurant. It's not the best if we are talking Luxe.

Rixos Libertas hotel in Dubrovnik. 5* hotel, beautiful views, gorgeous food, within walking distance of the UNESCO world heritage site Dubrovnik, absolutely stunning.

Hotel - Kimpton hotel Monaco in Washington DC. The staff were amazing, the corner room superb and we had our own goldfish to look after!

very close second - Cliveden where we were treated like royalty.

B&B - Historic Oak Hill Inn in Natchez. Mint julep and gooey chocolate cookie on arrival, the most amazing breakfast I’ve ever had and a really characterful bedroom. We even had our own tour of the house and its history. I’ve just had a look and sadly they no longer have guests.

The D'Angleterre in Copenhagen at Christmas time for pre-christmas shenanigans. Excellent.

mitogoshi · 11/09/2024 20:39

The Kingsbury in Colombo Sri Lanka, was treated amazingly though they were wanting to be too helpful, wanting to provide me with a driver rather than me using UberTut I won!

mitogoshi · 11/09/2024 20:41

Others recently are quite different, Buxton Crescent Spa and Crug Glas in Pembrokeshire, polar opposites in style but both lovely.

The Datai in Langkawi Malaysia. In a rain forest on a beach. The decor, service, food, location were all unbelievable. We went for our honeymoon. We weren’t supposed to be staying there but ended up moving hotels (long story) and were so glad we did. We got a good deal thank god because the brochure price was 👀.

The Old Cataract Hotel, Luxor, Egypt.

It was about 30 years ago, so hopefully it has stayed in great preserve. Inspired Agatha Christies Death on The Nile. Fabulous, like a trip back in time & splendor. We took the overnight sleeper down from Cairo backpacking, stayed in a flea pit hotel in Luxor, but spent the day & evening meal at The Old Cateract. Remember every detail yet.

Union Station, St Louis, Missouri.

I stayed there when I was 22 on a work trip and it was lovely. One time I was having dinner in the big dinning room all by myself in the evening. A young man was playing a baby grand piano, and there were only two other people there, talking quietly. It was lovely and just for a minute or two, time stood still. I still enjoy that memory.

Canaves Oia Suites in Santorini.

canaves.com/canaves-oia-suites/

Omg. Luxury from the moment we set foot in the door, greeted with chilled sangria. The suites were divine with private views of the Santorini sunset and your own personal pools. A big smashable chocolate heart in the bedroom and the BEST rainforest shower. Breakfast to DIE for and drivers on call to take you/pick you up from the centre you just had to send a WhatsApp. It was our honeymoon hotel but genuinely the best hotel experience of my life 😍 god I miss holidays pre-DD 😂

NH Hotel in Munich. Really clean.

😂

What an accolade.

21 Nettleton, Cape Town. Incredible views and service, super personal.

Four Seasons Desroches Island, Seychelles. A small island, only thing on it really is the hotel. Surrounded by beach and half of the island is all tropical forest and beautiful. No cars or phone signal. Very unique and special.

Marataba Mountain Lodge, South Africa. Rooms built in to the side of a mountain in a closed reserve with the most stunning views, amazing staff and game drives.

GremlinDolphin4 · 11/09/2024 20:58

The Slieve Russell in Cavan, Ireland. We were there to meet previously unknown family who were amazing and the hotel literally hugged us into Ireland from the minute we arrived. Lovely room, food, pool, grounds, staff, everything. We are hoping to go back this Xmas!

Mansionscoldandgrey · 11/09/2024 20:58

You beat me to it! We haven't stayed there for a while but all the suites are stunning. Did you dance around wearing not much more than a bearskin as well? 😅

A hotel in Germany...we arrived wet through, no where I stay after 2 hours of trying different hotels, everyone was full, and through the rain I saw a hotel with five stars ..I said to dh let's go in there...he laughed and said no we not 5 star...I went in as tbh I was so wet I didn't care...he followed...we got lucky the owner was on the desk...I politely if there was any rooms whilst dripping water on the floor...owner said one room was available for two nights and took us to see the room..it was like a dream....I explained our budget which wasn't great....she smiled and said that's what the room is on for and that includes use of the hotel spA etc and evening meal, breakfast...I never have ever stayed at such wonderful place...it was a dream for two.nights....the food was out of this world and that evening meal after our evening swim in the best pool and hot tub I even been in was out of this world....we got champagne to start with on our evening meal...hotel was the centre of a stunning market town....we dreaded the price at the end of the stay (in case we misunderstood ) but it was what were we told...I know the hotel name and looked to book it a year later and several times since..the price was x 1000 what we paid for two nights for one night....I have amazing memories and the most amazing photo of dh and i on the rooftop spa in the hot tub...I will return when we win the lottery...best hotel I have ever stayed at....German Bavaria area...
