I’m cold. But also poor so I’m doing my best to keep it off!

i don't know about pensioners getting a winter heating allowance, I think those of us in the coldest parts of the country should get one having read all these posts about folk having the windows open and fans running! It's 11 degrees and blowing a gale here this morning. My thermostat was reading 17.3 when I left for work, that's cold if i'd been staying in.

See, it would never even occur to me out the heating on if the thermostat was at 17.

We're in Cumbria and it's storming like mad but it's not cold by any means. Our windows are open 24/7 still.

Sartre · 10/09/2024 09:08

No but I don’t think it’s massively cold just yet, it’s about 14 degrees here today which I can cope with. It’s when it dips below 10 I have an issue and need the heating on otherwise I genuinely start to get cramps in my feet.

God, I hate these race to the bottom/Four Yorkshiremen posts.

I, and most people I know, would feel cold sat at a desk all day at 17 degrees. Putting an extra jumper on still doesn't change the ambient temperature.

Our room thermostat is set at 20 degrees.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/09/2024 09:18

@RampantIvy exactly!! There's a difference between leaving the house at that temperature or being busy doing housework etc and if you're sitting working at a desk or watching tv in the evening. we've had no sun here for days so the temperature hasn't gone up indoors all day. I'm wearing trackies and a hoodie, it's not like I'm swanning around shorts & tshirt with the heating on!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/09/2024 09:22

No, you have reminded me the thermostat needs new batteries though Grin it's normally switched on to timed in October with the 'stat set to 18°/20° in the day 16° overnight, we adjust as needed depending on the outside temp/ how the house feels.

GaladrieI · 10/09/2024 09:23

I've been thinking about it some evenings. It's been bearable but just a bit chilly. Getting up at 5am I've been pretty chilly walking out the front door.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 10/09/2024 09:27

Not yet, despite being in a draughty old house in the north. The woollen cardigan has been deployed though.

It won't take much of a drop before we start to heat though. One year we were too miserly, and got the emergence if black mould between the walls and some large items of furniture, so simply not worth it.

Strawberrypicnic · 10/09/2024 09:29

No but I had a blanket on the sofa for the first time last night (London). I can't believe there are people saying it's still fine here! Okay so it's warmer than further north but definitely not open windows and t-shirts weather 😯

Stickseas0n · 10/09/2024 09:37

In Scotland, been turning mine on sporadically since June

RedPony1 · 10/09/2024 09:38

I'm in the South West and we're still using a fan at night because its so warm! It was 17.5 degrees at the farm yesterday evening - still tshirt weather when its not raining!

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 10/09/2024 10:05

Had it on a couple of times (Scotland). Definitely time to change back to the winter quilt though!

rainsofcastamere · 10/09/2024 10:09

It's still boiling! No heating is required! I'm the kind who moans when I'm too hot and then moans when it's cold, I'm also not competitively thrifty either but my heating rarely goes on before November and then it's back off again from March! It's just not cold, well it's not here in Barnsley anyway!

sunsetsandboardwalks · 10/09/2024 10:17

@RampantIvy on the flip side, why can't people ever just respond to these threads without being criticised and told they’re making it a race to the bottom?

All I've done is say that I wouldn't put the heating on at 17 degrees and you've automatically decided I'm making it into a competition 🙄

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/09/2024 10:22

No, but I’m in a relatively mild area of the SE.

Once it really does feel cold indoors it’ll be going on, though. It’s never on at night, however cold it is - TBH hardly ever needed. We control it via the thermostat.

zingally · 10/09/2024 10:53

No... Still warm enough for short sleeves inside the house! But this is a mid-floor flat with only 2 sides exposed to the elements, so it holds the heat well. Thermostat says it's 22.5C in here at the moment.
I didn't turn it on at all last winter (trying to save every penny to buy a house) and it never fell below 16C, even in mid-winter.

I'm near you. It is for me. It was nice on Friday, but I am back in fleeces now. It isn't boiling. We have 12 degrees today.

ShortColdandGrey · 10/09/2024 11:01

No, too early but I have had the hot water bottle in my bed some nights. It doesn't help that I live with people run hot and I am always cold 😂

noworklifebalance · 10/09/2024 11:10

Had a new extension built downstairs and our north facing kitchen and living area is lovely and warm - used to be freezing and had to wear a huge number of layers just to be not cold (not warm, just not cold).
The rest of the house is still Victorian and not well insulated but having a nice warm kitchen and living area has made the world of difference and so the rest of the house being cooler doesn’t seem to matter so much. I am wearing t-shirts indoors and the kids are in shorts.
Stepped out of the house this morning and I was surprised at how cool it is (SE). It used to be the case that the outside was warmer than the inside!

I agree, it's like some kind of weird oneupmanship or something if they can hold off longer than anyone else. For what it's worth I had my heating on several evenings in August this year as the house was cold.

Yeah, it's a real one-upmanship that people are struggling to afford to heat their homes 🤨

Vettrianofan · 10/09/2024 11:23

Had it on for ages.

Octavia64 · 10/09/2024 11:24

Yes.

But it's hive and I leave it on all year with it set to come on at about 16.

So if the house gets colder than 16 it comes on.

TwoBlueFish · 10/09/2024 11:25

No, my living room is still 19 degree! I still have the window open all night as well. I’m Manchester area.

That's different from the "it's not cold at 12 degrees" though. I have been there and I have every sympathy.

PandaChopChop · 10/09/2024 11:26

Thermostat is set to 17 degrees and it came on overnight. The house was lovely and toasty this morning (until I realised my radiator wasn't switched on in my bedroom!)
