I’m cold. But also poor so I’m doing my best to keep it off!

South of the border here and had it on to test the system today as it was a little cooler. However hope to hold off closer to October. I fixed my tariff so know exactly how much it will be so not too worried about use this year.

KittenKins · 10/09/2024 00:48

Yep, currently on & I'm in a warmer part of the country, the south west. I'm skinny & disabled though. I live under a duvet most of the year & if my thermometer is under 22 in my room I tend to throw on the heating on after a few hours of wondering if I can afford it.

I'm also not sure when I should stick it on upstairs. I have night support & while most will stick a jumper on, tonight's lady mentioned she as cold at 22:00 & I don't want to make others uncomfortable.

I will be turning it off before bed though.

Scotland here and it's been glorious today. Raining now but not cold as the day's sun warmed the house up.

Not gonna lie though - i think i have had it on twice over this past month. And, as soon as i feel it cold, it will be on.

Those electric ponchos from Lakeland are great if you are watching the pennies - though the initial outlay is dear. One for your Christmas stocking!

Funny how it varies. Where I am, also Scotland was cloudy all day and windy and cool. This morning it’s raining, breathy and 8 degrees.

It's not really funny how it varies. Britain is about 600 miles long. Scotland is about 270 miles long - and that doesn't include going as far as Shetland in the far far north.

I don't hear people say England has been hot/cold/windy - they usually specify an area. I don't understand why people describe weather in Scotland like it's the same everywhere. Oftentimes it's not.

On MN it is usually London.

Altitude makes a difference. We are in the foothills of the Pennines and it is always 2 or 3 degrees cooler here than the nearest city. It is currently 12 degrees and forecast to stay at 12 degrees all day. Jumper weather.

Alapotin · 10/09/2024 07:15

Mine came on this morning so it must have gone under 19c

Beezknees · 10/09/2024 07:27

No, it's not that cold. I have mine set to come on when the house drops to 16 degrees, will still be a while yet I'd have thought.

You'll only know how much your unit rates are though, not your actual bill

we are at the 'wrap a blanket' round yourself stage! i'll be damned if i put the heating on in spetember

Same...blanket and socks for now! I managed like this last year until the end of October. Hoping to do the same this year, so I can build up my energy 'in credit' situation to around £400 (it's currently at £280 in credit). If I get to £400 I reckon I can just about manage to survive the huge winter energy prices 😢

Yirk · 10/09/2024 07:39

Mine has clicked on the last two mornings, it's set at 20.

Gorgonemilezola · 10/09/2024 07:40

Fire on for a couple of hours last night because it was damp and chilly (11° at 7pm, NE England) and will probably have it on for the next couple of nights because it's forecast below 10° even during the day, but have had doors and windows open all day until now.

linelgreen · 10/09/2024 07:43

Surely common sense would say if you feel cold you just flick the heating on regardless of time of year.

Surely common sense would say that many people can't afford to just "flick the heating on".

Sharptonguedwoman · 10/09/2024 07:49

In the south but yes, heating is on for a little to add a bit of comfort in the evening. Only about 45 minutes. Heating system in a rented house is old and takes about 20 minutes to warm up. Memo to self: bleed radiators.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 10/09/2024 07:51

Battlerope · 09/09/2024 19:57

No, but where I am it’s still mid to high twenties in the middle of the night.

Where are you?

Gettingbysomehow · 10/09/2024 07:53

You must be joking. I'm still using my fan becsuse its still hot some dsys. I'm south west.
I don't turn it on until it's really freezing. The cats have heated beds and I use an electric blanket.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 10/09/2024 07:55

England, inland SE.

nope, just enjoying not being too hot. Haven't even had a cardi on yet, let alone the heating, but there's a definite change in the air.

MouseofCommons · 10/09/2024 07:59

Yes, for an hour yesterday as the air was so chilly and damp. Hampshire. I had loads of laundry that hasn't quite dried on the line too, so I popped the waistbands and thick socks on the radiators.

CreamC · 10/09/2024 08:08

Mardyybum · 09/09/2024 21:47

Heating no, but we have lit the log burner for the last two nights

We also lit the log burner last night, for the first time.

fortheveryfirsttime · 10/09/2024 08:13

No way. I'm still in sandals and tshirts. It's gloomy today but not cold.

We've had the heated airer out and used the tumble dryer because it's been wet but definitely don't need heating on.

Shodan · 10/09/2024 08:22

Well after my bold statement earlier, I came down this morning thinking that the weather must've changed for the better because it was pleasantly warm in the house.

No no no. The heating had kicked in. I have it set to 16 degrees overnight so it must have dropped below that. Going to reset it now- I refuse to start paying for heating in bloody September.

ThatMakesSense · 10/09/2024 08:28

Nooooo I refuse to until at least some way into October

Beth216 · 10/09/2024 08:38

Apparently there's arctic air coming our way this week and here (south west) we've got highs of 13 degrees on Thursday. I refuse to put the heating on in September though! It's going back up again to 18/19 next week supposedly.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/09/2024 08:53

i don't know about pensioners getting a winter heating allowance, I think those of us in the coldest parts of the country should get one having read all these posts about folk having the windows open and fans running! It's 11 degrees and blowing a gale here this morning. My thermostat was reading 17.3 when I left for work, that's cold if i'd been staying in.

Echobelly · 10/09/2024 08:55

No, but planning to tomorrow as it looks like night temps are really dropping. The first few weeks I just have it on early morning and late evening.
