I’m cold. But also poor so I’m doing my best to keep it off!

That's different from the "it's not cold at 12 degrees" though. I have been there and I have every sympathy.

People growing up in the far north of Scotland will often have a very different idea of what is cold than people that grow up in the south of England. Why does it have to be classed as one-upmanship that people have different experiences of different temperatures?

I was in Spain in October, and it was 20°. I was wearing tshirts and cropped trousers, and the Spanish were wearing puffa jackets, jeans and boots. I wasn't trying to 'one-up' them, but to me 20° is lovely and warm.

Vettrianofan · 10/09/2024 11:33

Have my heating on at 23/24°C to dry clothing.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 10/09/2024 11:34

I agree, it's like some kind of weird oneupmanship or something if they can hold off longer than anyone else

How is it a "weird oneupmanship" to say you don't think 17 degrees is cold enough for the heating? 😂

MN is so bizarre on these threads - it's like anyone who doesn't feel the cold must be bragging or something - it's seriously odd.

Exactly @NeverEnoughPants.

My aunt was visiting from Australia recently - it was 18 degrees and she had a puffa on and was complaining she was cold. I was in leggings and a t-shirt and feeling fine.

Everyone is different and it's not "bragging" to say you wouldn't feel cold at a certain temperature, just like it's not bragging to say you don't find it hot enough for a fan.

rainsofcastamere · 10/09/2024 11:57

I'm near you. It is for me. It was nice on Friday, but I am back in fleeces now. It isn't boiling. We have 12 degrees today.

@RampantIvy

It's not 12 degrees inside though! And that's the point, a fleece top or a hoody is more than sufficient, for me, than sticking the heating on. If I put my heating on when it was 12 degrees outside then I wouldn't be able to sleep!

It's not a dig at anyone, I just think it's warm and I don't think 12 degrees outside requires the heating to be on inside!

RuthW · 10/09/2024 12:16

Ummm no. Today is the first day I've work a cardi and night even wearing tights for work yet. Ask again in a month.

DelilahBucket · 10/09/2024 12:17

Had it on for 20 minutes last week to give it an airing and get some washing dry, but no not yet. The hot water bottle has occasionally started to make an appearance in the evening, but I've not got a throw out yet, so we've got a bit to go. May feel differently towards the back end of this week though.

maslinpan · 10/09/2024 12:23

No heating on but I am making an apple crumble today.

TheCatterall · 10/09/2024 12:28

Not yet, we are in Lancashire and it’s very windy today and about 15 degrees. Our house isn’t very well insulated but it’s a put on a thick jumper day… determined not to do heating until October at least.

mydogisthebest · 10/09/2024 12:45

I don't think there has been a single month this year that it has not been on at least once!

I put it on yesterday evening as I was cold. In East Midlands

OnGoldenPond · 10/09/2024 14:12

It's 15 degrees here so not remotely warm enough for heating on yet though appreciate that's not the case throughout the UK. Plus our house is very well insulated so barely have heating on even in depths of winter.

OnGoldenPond · 10/09/2024 14:12

Cold enough I mean! Doh!

PeachSloth · 10/09/2024 14:24

Heating on today, 10c but the feels like on the weather app is -2, windy, rainy cold and the house temp dropped below 16 so nest kicked in.

I have succumbed to crumpets, although no heating until mid October, hopefully.

TLMTTCSJTT1 · 10/09/2024 15:12

My angel DH did for me earlier but I'm on and I have a cold, so I felt like shit and I was very grateful! We agreed we wouldn't make a habit of it just yet though haha. It is such a nice cosy feeling when it goes on though, I'd done that thing when you wake up thinking you have work and realise it's your day off and I merrily snuggled back to sleep for another hour.

TalbotAMan · 10/09/2024 15:19

It's technically always on but controlled by thermostats which are set to 19 degrees. As far as I can tell it hasn't kicked in yet, but we are all feeling a bit cold.

sleepwithblanket · 10/09/2024 16:49

Snow expected in Glencoe tonight.

Snow expected in Glencoe tonight.

Who said that? Met office is suggesting a low of 6 or 7°C.

Glencoe Mountain Resort. Windy Wilson. Winter highland have all said it.

PeachSloth · 10/09/2024 17:37

They’ve had some today but nothing lying yet.

To ask if you’ve put your heating on yet?!
Stirmish · 10/09/2024 17:38

No but I have now closed the windows which have been open for months

IrisApfel · 10/09/2024 17:43

No. I'm annoyingly too hot in a sweatshirt but too cold in a t-shirt 😕

Stirmish · 10/09/2024 17:44

My thermostat is set to 18 so will come on automatically when it gets to 17

My house warms up quickly and thermostat set on a timer throughout the day to go on and off

WalkingonWheels · 10/09/2024 18:38

Wow, no. It's 15°! It's currently 22° in my house with all the windows open and ceiling fans on.

Windmillsofyourminds · 10/09/2024 19:08

Today it is 17 degrees in my house and I am cold. I have four layers on and a throw over me when sitting down. I think I need to get my warmer duvet. Despite this, it is not time for the heating yet. The most I do is a fan heater for 5 minutes when getting dressed and undressed.
For those who have the heating set at 21, 22 or 23 degrees, how much do you pay in heating? I pay £200 a month and last winter was paying over £300 with a maximum of 19 degrees set. I have to wear a lot of clothes.
