It wasn't so bad previously but really changed over the past 6 years or so. I grew up on a farm in on the edge of town and it felt like such a different world. Moved away after uni and only came back to assist when our parents were ill, and managed to get stuck here after.

It feels awful to see what was once a decent place go so much downhill. I don't even recognise the people, it is like another world, just so angry and loud and quite violent. What was once my closest town centre has become a drug infested hell hole, and the crime rate is climbing rapidly.

But what is most depressing is the vibe, everywhere outdoors is miserable, and I am not exaggerating. Constant sirens (only in the past few yrs) and police. Extremely loud, aggressive sounding vehicles, shouting and screaming in public, litter and shit everywhere.

I used to blame government for this kind of thing, policy, etc. But I don't know now. I see a growing culture of entitlement and selfishness all around. Maybe it's just this place? Of course the town centre died, like many have, but the trouble and violence that is visible is quite new here. It isn't all poverty, in fact it is a high rent area, and yet people really don't care.

I feel so depressed about this, yet know it is pointless. Life goes on and it isn't worth worrying about. Live and let live. But until we move, it has affected me to some extent, and even our own street has changed in the past few yrs.
It's like an alien place, that I don't recognise.
I long to be out of it, but reading some other posts I see this is common in many places.

I suppose it just got too much this past month, we have a new business opened in the street that revs all day, and how someone thought this was ok to go ahead I have no idea. Most of the original neighbours moved, and there is so much pet neglect , dog shit and litter here it feels hopeless.

Just fed up.

@SallyWD they are not asylum seekers. We have an influx of people from an Eastern European country where I live. The family had a very fancy car that they got into when I ask them to move.

I know on MN it’s a crime to criticise immigration laws in this country but if you live in a community that’s negatively affected it’s hard to be so positive about it. It’s hard living by people who think it’s fine to hang in big groups on the street and congregate in random areas. They are also not interested in improving the area in any way.

Well asylum seekers aren't allowed to work while they're being assessed so what exactly can they do apart from hang out? They can't sit in their bedrooms 24/7. As long as they're not engaging in criminal activity, I don't see the problem with just hanging around. Once they've been processed and if they're staying here, I'm sure they'll get jobs.
Obviously they shouldn't be hanging out on your driveway though!

They often do engage in criminal activity though. I see groups of men hanging outside the shops and drinking cans in the park, they aren't speaking English either so I'm not sure what jobs they're desperately waiting to start.

These people really haven't got a clue what it's like for the rest of us. I find it mind-blowing how they will complain about the decline of our country/strain on our services...while welcoming more and more people in.

You haven't given examples of any criminal activities. Hanging around in parks or outside shops is perfectly legal. Again - if they are asylum seekers they're not allowed to work so what are supposed to do? Of course, they talk to each other in their language - it doesn't mean they can't speak English. How's that related to them wanting or not wanting to get jobs?

These people. Are you talking about me? I live in a very diverse area with asylum seekers nearby. I see more antisocial behaviour from the white kids who ride about on bikes trying to steal things and intimidate people. Or drunk blokes getting into fights. Our local immigrant communities are pretty well behaved in comparison, even if they do sometimes stand in the street.

FedUpFreddy · 10/09/2024 20:44

You’re lucky to have that outlook @SallyWD i wish I did. Where I live my friends daughter has to take a longer walk home to avoid the congregating men. It’s nice to think “oh they are just innocent guys hanging out” the reality is not an easy breezy experience.

We also have agressive beggars run by gangs. This has all intensified in the last 3/4 years. It’s really hard. I don’t like disliking people but when they make my crappy area even worse it’s hard not to. Wish I was rich and lived in a nice place.

Notaflippinclue · 10/09/2024 21:52

Not common where we live - but it's a tourist spot so the council pull their finger out in the holiday season - I keep our very rural lane approx a mile long free of litter myself nobody else will - I don't know why it's quite fulfilling

I'm sorry you feel this way. It does sound difficult.

No they haven't. They've tightened border controls.

It really is depressing

...and so many people think allowing hundreds of immigrants in each day is going to help.

It might? Why not?

eggplant16 · 11/09/2024 15:12

Let's blame a few brown people shall we?
Near me a huge Cof E Church needed help with gardening. The same Cof E which is worth 8 billion. Several peope seeking asylum had seen a shout out on fb and turned up to help. They were swiftly thrown out.

The church turned away willing helpers!? Did they just rudely tell them to get lost, how did that happen!? (Not saying it didn't I'm just baffled how that would even be done with any guise of justification)

Yeah you're right, there's a housing crisis, there's not enough spaces in schools for children, NHS waiting lists are through the roof, getting a doctors appointment takes weeks, prisons are full, the country is in debt and the government are cutting back even more...so allowing hundreds more people in will definitely help improve things.

Beezknees · 11/09/2024 16:19

I live in a shit hole too OP.

Certainly isn't immigrants in my town though, it's the local alcoholics and drug addicts.

It's ok when they keep themselves to themselves but the other day a pair of the women robbed somebody's house and threatened the poor woman there with violence.

This doesn't surprise me. And why should newly arrived asylum seekers be responsible for improving the area anyway? Surely it's down to the local authorities and community. But you've given a good example of asylum seekers who are trying to improve the area.

The Church people made them feel unwelcome. Similarily they refused to give them a simple drink when they had walked miles.

Many of the people could help the country. Its just lazy to lay the blame with refugees.

I haven't blamed them.

How will these people help solve the problems in this country?

FedUpFreddy · 11/09/2024 18:45

@eggplant16 am I allowed to be annoyed about the economic migrants who commit crimes in my area? Am I allowed to be annoyed about the begging gangs that are exploited and trafficked? They are not brown so is that ok?

When will people realise this is not about skin colour or refugees. The people causing problems in my town are not refugees. They are economic migrants who have no interest in the local area. They are involved in crime and anti social behaviour.
