Lighthearted post.

Just that really 🤣 I’m very new to vinted. So let’s hear your Vinted horror stories!

Lighthearted post!

I’m new to selling on vinted but have heard lots from friends and seen online about very cheeky buyers.

I’ve had some very ridiculous offers for brand new items with tags and generally messed about. Of course you haggle and offer what you want to pay for items. Instances of being offered 79p on a £75 dress 🤣

Did anyone see the TikTok where a seller said they weren’t able to complete the order because they were distressed by the Molly Mae/ Tommy Fury break up 🙈

Interested how you got offered this as on my app it only lets you offer 40% of the price or more.

Willyoujust · 09/09/2024 20:01

Personally I think some of the sellers are “ridiculous” as you put it. I have tried to buy items with a reasonable offer but the seller wants almost what you can buy it for brand new. I am not going to risk spending a large amount of money on second hand clothes that I can’t try on or send back if I have a problem with it in a few weeks time. Some sellers think they can sell items for not much less than what they paid for it just because it still has the tag on it. No I am not going to pay nearly full price for it…I would rather pay a bit more and buy it from the shop! They are second hand clothes FFS so you’re lucky whatever you get for them really!

Well I just got done by a seller. Bought a dress £11. Picked it up today. 'New never worn' and it is New Never Worn. Description is correct.

Correct because it's practically made of plastic. You know that thin umbrella/cheap bag lining type material? Yep. In fact the packaging is actually thicker than the entire dress folded. It came folded like a letter. Oh and described as a 'midi' length. I take midi as to the knee.

Well it's not reaching the knee. Says it's a size 14 feels like a 12. I don't know why I even bothered trying it on it looks like something - and I'm not even being mean - that you would buy in a pound shop every detail of my underwear comes through. The picture is clever, the seller has it filmed spread out on a bed so the duvet material behind it gives it a more substantial look, instead of hanging it up where it's total transparency would be evident.

Best I could do with it is make it into a slip. But it would still be tight.

As for the shoes bought previously, I decided to take them to the cobblers this afternoon, but he said there is nothing he can do to make them wearable. The size 9s can't be made to fit 'sell them' no point putting insoles in and the vintage ones the glue is 'old' and brittle. He refused to reglue the front. And annoyingly refused to sell me insoles. He then gave me a lecture about how many people are buying second hand shoes and coming to him expecting him to work magic, but he would need to rebuild the shoe with a nee sole from the ground up. He said I could pay £150 (yes) to start that if I wanted.

I actually think he was being rather precious, he showed me shoes he's selling for thousands of pounds. So I think I went to the wrong sort of shop, but I think I ought to take a breather from Vinted for a while. I've had some great deals but my luck seems to be waning a bit!

Sellers, how much money do you actually make? Am I right in thinking items are usually sold for a few pounds. Is it too much hassle?

Think in about 6 months I've made just over £200 roughly

But that's from mine and my mom's clothes plus a few bits from my Nan's house clearance. Mostly less than £2 but a few things have been £8-£10 and a pair of shoes was £15. We've had a big clear out. Once that sells, won't have much on there

In roughly 18 months I have made £456.87 but in that period there have been spells of up to 6 months, maybe more, where I didn't upload anything to sell.

This month I've made £54.74 from clearing the kids playroom out.

Im a SAHP and can make the post office on my daily school run if I need to so I don't have to go out my way, I also have a basket/area plus a garage where I can keep everything stored until it sells so it's not in the way.

I feel it makes sense for me to hold onto things until I can make some money back on them.

This is exactly it. Too many people think what they paid for an item is relevant to what someone else will pay to buy it from them second hand. Even “brand new with tags” is second hand, because the buyer’s only redress is from a private seller; not a shop that may have a more generous returns policy.

The value of a BNWT item declines as soon as it leaves the shop, or at least as soon as the returns window expires. Additionally, unless the seller has suddenly realised the day after the window closed that they forgot to return it, most BNWT garments are for sale because the seller has had them hanging around for a while and has realised they’re never going to wear them (regretted impulse buy, never “slimmed into them” as planned) - making it old stock and less desirable. Add into that the fact that they only have one of a particular item - meaning their customer base is size 12s who like that particular item rather than people who like it full stop - and suddenly the original price tag on the item looks more and more meaningless.

It’s a hard mentality to break. I remember advising a friend when he was selling his late mother’s house that he should replace the carpets. He looked at me aghast and said “My mom paid six hundred pounds for that carpet!!” He couldn’t get his head around the fact that it meant nothing to potential buyers - all they would see was that the carpets were 20 years old (and 30 years out of date).

I only started 4 weeks ago and have made £300 with another £170 in pending balances. I am having a huge clear out and most items have tags still on, I developed an unhealthy shopping habit during lockdown. Clearing it all now feels so good.

There are niche items or certain brands where people will pay say 60 -80% of the original value because these brand almost never have a sale and the items are just not available anymore.

But on the whole you're right. It is weird.

Someone is selling a skirt on Vinted today - that I know was being sold by that label at least 8 or so years ago, possibly even 10+ years - I know because at the time I absolutely loved it and was gutted to have missed out as my size was gone and I rang the retailer asking if they had any returns - for £40+!! The skirt sold new for £80ish at least 8 YEARS ago and the seller isn't even selling it NWT. It's been sitting around in their wardrobe and also actually worn for years. It's pure wool and it is pretty, so maybe that's why they think someone will pay it. I would have bought it too, was happy to find it again, but not at that silly price. I think even the original retailer had in the £60ish bracket on sale at the time.

I won't even make an offer as I'm sure it will be considered an insult. You can't make a 'reasonable offer' on something priced like that.

I've only had 2 issues

One a pair of flat sandals that were advertised as worn once and perfect condition, they fell to bits after the first wear!

My skincare obsessed tween asked Mr to order her some coconut hydrating drops which seemed a good price. When they arrived it was an empty cardboard box, on rereading the Vinted description it did say 'packaging only' which we had missed ! Who buys empty packaging.

That’s a shame about the shoes. Did you manage to sort out a refund for them ? It does seem that sellers are really naughty for listing items in a condition better than they actually are.

That does seem misleading about the drops, even though they were as described. I imagine that lots of people have done the same thing thinking it’s the product they’re buying at a quick glance . It does seem odd to sell just the packaging.

I absolutely agree with this, in my experience with Vinted it's the sellers, not the buyers , that are ridiculous. Some of the prices that people ask for second hand clothes are crazy.

a lot of collectors buy packaging/dustbags/boxes, there is actually quite a big market for it. Especially for collectors. I’ve sold a few boxes. But “box only” should’ve been added in the title, and usually if the price is too good to be true- it means it’s just the box lol!

YourVividDuck · 18/10/2024 14:41

Hi I’m pretty new to Vinted. I haven’t sold anything but bought a few bits and had no problem and dealt with nice people. However I bought an item of clothing sold as new without tags. Came with a rip in, so I requested to return and get a refund. Apparently I can ‘enjoy wearing my freebie’ but I can’t because it’s really ripped. Why on earth list it as new if it’s not.

OverlyFragrant · 27/05/2025 23:17

At the risk of resurrecting the dead, I had this classic today.

I listed a lovely dress, considering it was ££ new, I very reasonably priced it £15. Had loads of interest straight away as expected, and two people offering £10. I declined. One got the message and the other upped her offer by a total of 50p. Again declined. And she upped by another 50p! Again I declined.
Thought no more of it. In the meantime someone's come and clicked 'Buy now' and paid full price. Good on them, I'll send it tomorrow.

Cheeky chancer then messages me really quite sarky "shame I wanted to buy". I explained, they paid full price, what more can I do. She then asks me to cancel the persons full price order to relist it so she can bid again.

What the fudge.

I've politely declined. And blocked. But seriously, where do these people get off.

Betsylee · 29/08/2025 22:39

I get cross that people list as new without tags and then I found when I ironed some linen trousers, which appeared new, although very creased, very bobbled between the upper legs! Had obviously been worn, luckily my debobbler sorted them out.
I also get cross, like others say when you list for £3.50 and they offer £3!
For the most part I have had some good buys but check people's feedback and put a price limit in too. It can be addictive,or I find it is,to scroll each morning but have decided to make a pact once my things are sold to keep off it! I much prefer actually seeing clothing in stores and I don't need to buy secondhand tbh!
