To wonder (thinking about this awful French rape case) if humans are just rotten

It wasn't just the husband - at least 80 men went along with this. Guys with ordinary lives drawn out of nowhere.

I wonder if it would be better if we were to just wind things up as a species.

to be fair the premise of the thread is should we get rid of them all so namalt has to apply!!!

Yep. I wasn't alive yet and I'm in my bloody 50s. That's how long ago it was.

just out of interest, I have been on my local paper's website and found these: The following are just from this week and will only make the local news but similar crimes will be happening throughout the country.

"man charged with abducting teenage schoolgirl"
"man headbutted and repeatedly punched woman in her home"
"convicted sex offender jailed after repeatedly breaching his order"
"Teacher admits sex offences against pupil at school where he taught"

These are "just" the offences against women, I have missed out all the stabbings, a couple of shootings, bottle attacks in bars and knifepoint robberies but all these were also carried out by males but had males as victims.

Montydone · 05/09/2024 18:43

This is harrowing to think about.
Yes I agree that some men (more than women) use other people as objects and can feel a thrill from exerting power and control. I’m interested in understanding why… is it greater testosterone; the way society and religion is constructed; the patriarchy; how some boys have been raised…. Shamed for what is perceived as “weakness”; chastised for crying (“boys don’t cry”/ “get some balls!”). Why do some men project their vulnerable parts elsewhere and take pleasure in exerting power over them? I feel that is partly what this case is about… complete power over someone utterly vulnerable

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2024 18:44

I am saying this as someone who has been the victim of both male and female abuse, on a thread which was started by somebody talking about humans, being terrible and immediately got jumped on by people saying it’s always men

I'm very sorry for your experiences Flowers but it is vastly more likely to be men who commit sexual violence and other violence, and the event being discussed is about a large group of men preying on a woman. It's important to discuss why men commit sexual violence like this against women and girls and what if anything can be done about it.

"There was a poster upthread who was extolling the virtues of her lovely son who apparently is simply incapable if doing anything like this. Maybe so. Bet he watches porn though. Sorry to burst your bubble."

Yup

That 2 different ppl have written a list of only 3 women and yet only came up with 5 names kind of illustrates the point that women are nowhere near the scale of a problem as men are.

This. I bet this thread will be 700 posts long by tomorrow and the handmaidens will be clutching to Myra Hindley for dear life.

I will give you Aileen Wuornos to be generous.

Aileen wournos was heavily abused by men and very messed up by things that happened to her.

What? You're just tiresome.

These threads make me despair. Not just because of the dreadful news stories that inspire them but because of the naivety of some posters. I wonder what it will take to make people realise that men, as a class of people, are despicable. Some individuals are perfectly nice, but as a class of people they're responsible for virtually all the atrocities that have ever been committed.

There was a poster upthread who was extolling the virtues of her lovely son who apparently is simply incapable if doing anything like this. Maybe so. Bet he watches porn though. Sorry to burst your bubble.

That is a historical fact. Men to go wars, rape, torture and kill. There is not a single woman ever done that. Only nurses in wars, doing their best to save lives.

Lucy Lethby ( aledgedly)
Myra Hindley
Maxime Carr etc
......not always men.

You need to take Maxine Carr off the list. She provided an alibi to Huntley. That was it. She is not a killer.

I really recommend Monster, if you haven't seen it. But a really difficult watch,

Some humans.
Not just men.

Myra Hindley
Tracey Connolly
Rose West.

The anti-male sentiment is quite astonishing.

You remember these women's names. Myra Hindley was 60 years ago.
That's because they are rare.

Though my DH points out that it doesn’t matter why someone is putting their boot on your head after pushing you to the floor. The only thing that matters is that they’re doing it.

Fetchthevet · 05/09/2024 18:35

I honestly think all men would commit rape if they had the opportunity and knew they would get away with it.

So do I. Having said that, most of them do get away with it!

roseyblack · 05/09/2024 18:57

Yes - humanity is rotten.

People focusing on men and men only - how is that helpful? Are they a species of their own? Do they exist in a vacuum? Do they bring themselves up?
What shall we do after agreeing it's the men - get rid of all of them, never give birth to them, and live happily ever after?

IOSTT · 05/09/2024 18:57

We should do the opposite of Islam - keep all the men at home and let the women roam freely and safely.

I agree totally that Aileen Wuornos was messed up by abuse. But I didn't want to give the NAMALTERS the slightest defence.

FridayFeelingmidweek · 05/09/2024 18:58

Yes, as most have said, it's men.

Valeriekat · 05/09/2024 18:58

KurtShirty · 05/09/2024 16:35

No, not all rapists are men.

By definition in the UK THEY ARE!

PandoraSox · 05/09/2024 18:59

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/09/2024 18:38

I think it's framed in a very jarring way. The idea that anyone could think about all those different men prepared to rape a drugged woman in her sleep, and not think the sex of the "humans" has anything to do with it, is odd.

Yes. If women are just as bad, why didn't any lesbians turn up to have a turn?

OneTwoTen · 05/09/2024 19:00

I just wonder: on a thread about male violence, specifically male sexual violence against women - whom does it benefit to point out that occasionally women offend as well?

Why even make that point?

LightSpeeds · 05/09/2024 19:00

Many men are rotten - and getting more so.

IOSTT · 05/09/2024 19:00

Pyjamatimenow · 05/09/2024 15:20

My god. I’ve just read this story. Poor woman. Surely though she must have felt odd when she woke up on a regular basis after being drugged? He’d have had to give her some heavy duty stuff for her not to wake

Yes, she felt ill all the time but did not know why. Do NOT imply she is in any way responsible for what he did

StMarieforme · 05/09/2024 19:01

Stath · 05/09/2024 15:32

When men are unchecked they destroy

I’m the mother of wonderful sons and, throughout their growing into men, I’ve always instilled in them the importance of challenging the behaviour of their sex

It’s not enough for them to just shrug their shoulders and think of themselves as ‘good guys’

They have to be proactive in fighting against the evils that the a vast swath of the male population inflicts on women and girls and children and that means challenging ‘blokey’ talk about hurting women etc

I am mother to 3 and I have done the same. And they do. They do not stand quietly by.

Who brings up men? Men and women and wider society.

OptimismvsRealism · 05/09/2024 17:47

I mean, these guys were men but women have committed plenty of atrocities too. I don't think you can get away with othering them just because you're a woman.

Not on the same scale though? Can you think of one similar case where a woman has done something like this? I’ll wait…
