Disney adults

In the last year I've met three separate couples that are so into Disney.

I know we all like different things, but isn't Disney for children?

Not bothered about Disney adults but I find it hard to marry up “Disney is for everyone” with the high prices in their parks and their ridiculous queueing systems.

You don't have to go to a park to enjoy Disney though. You can relate to a film, enjoy a character, read the books etc.

I think it suggests some form of arrested development, but I don’t judge it negatively, it’s just that if you’ve got a life-sized Disney mural on all your sitting room walls, Mickey Mouse stencils on all your kitchen units, and a sign saying WE DO DISNEY!, we’re unlikely to become close friends.

This 100%.

It’s worth going to Disney World for Guardians of the Galaxy alone! Epcot and Animal Kingdom were our favourite parks.

Edited

Yup, Guardians all the way 🙌 🙌 Blooming love that ride!

Newsenmum · 05/09/2024 21:03

Isn’t that like anything though? honestly it’s not for me but can’t get wound up about it. I find it weird when people love horror!

armadillio · 05/09/2024 21:04

I always assumed it was a comfort thing. I do enjoy a Disney movie (Moana soundtrack made me cry the other day) but I don’t like Disney world, Disney + or Disney store tat.

However, I used to watch the Harry Potter movies back to back repeatedly in my 20s, and that was definitely a comfort thing.

A few years later it was Stranger Things (again a comfort thing).

Sausagenbacon · 05/09/2024 21:04

Each to their own.
I just don't feel the attraction to something so sanitised (and basically everything about it is to make money).
But I also judge adults that read Harry Potter books.

We’ve decided not to go again until they change the queueing system. As much as I love the Disney Magic I’m not going to pay all that money and not know that I will be able to go on the rides I want to. And I don’t want to stay at a cramped Disney Hotel either.

Yes, this is exactly it. When my daughter was little we went to MK for the first time. There was a very happy man in maybe his 60’s who was sweeping and whistling. He looked at my dd with her little Rapunzel t-shirt on, sat down and said ’Oh, I see you are here to see the other princesses, well the castle is that way. Have a magical day!’ And I know it’s fake and all, but it was still in such a genuine and nice way. My dd looked at her dad with the biggest smile and said ’dad, he thought I was a princess!’ I mean, it’s the little things that make memories..

I hope you got well quickly?

Ah, that's so sweet! Yes, that is what makes Disney different to other theme parks.

Yes, quick recovery thanks. An encounter with a very tough steak. In hospital Sunday, back on Thunder Mountain on Monday 😁

Laugh in their face? Really nice.

Would you rather know an adult who had a Mickey t-shirt or one who laughed in your face at your hobbies?

I judge adults who judge other adults for their interests.

We all judge others, the trick is not to say it or show it.

You are quoting someone who deliberately misquoted me to try to make me seem unkind.

I actually said I might 'laugh to their face' not 'in their face', and only 'depending on the relationship', which I later defined as someone like my sister or an old friend.

I would never laugh 'at' anyone's hobby, or their t-shirt if it would be rude. Equally, I am happy for close friends to take the piss out of my penchant for ancient cooking programmes or dog memes. We don't all have to like the same things and it's ok to personally think Disney is all a bit homogeneous and vom.

armadillio · 05/09/2024 21:27

Why is it ok for adults with kids to wear matching Disney jumpers and ears but not adults without kids?

wingingit1987 · 05/09/2024 21:27

We weren’t Disney adults until we took the kids. Now we absolutely love it. Going next week to Disneyland Paris and cannot wait.

WhosAfraidOfVirginalWolves · 05/09/2024 21:29

My God, people get very defensive about this. Admittedly, I've only skimmed the thread but I don't think anyone has actually proposed banning childless adults from Disneyland or is petitioning for them to stop selling Tinkerbell pyjamas in adult sizes?

I think everyone is aware that it's a free country, and that you can spend your time and money on whatever you want, and other people can still find your choices utterly bizarre. I quite like Star Trek, which wasn't considered very cool even when I was a child. My uni flatmate used to take the piss out of me quite a bit for watching it, as I did her for the amount of reality TV shite she got through. And neither of us cared, because we didn't see the other as the arbiter of what we could enjoy.

"Let people enjoy things" is a fairly vapid response to this stuff. No one's stopping them doing/buying/watching Disney stuff by calling them weird or childish online.

StMarieforme · 05/09/2024 21:30

61 and I love Chip.
Disney brings joy and pleasure to many. Who are you to tell people what they should like?

Yeah, I think I can't participate in Mumsnet much longer as the levels of offense-taking and critical thinking are inversely proportionate and not in a good way.

Just accept it isn’t nice.

It’ll do, I’m not sure. I’m not actually a massive Disney fan myself.

I just think that in a world full of war and rape and murder and all sorts of other bike behsviour, laughing at people for liking Disney is a bit of a misdirection of judgment.

No, it's dreamworks.

Zanatdy · 05/09/2024 21:42

Not at all. Where’s the harm in adults enjoying Disney. I’ve been to Disney a few times in the last decade and loved it. It’s like you’re in a different world when you walk inside the theme park. There’s much worse obsessions people can have
