In the last year I've met three separate couples that are so into Disney.

I know we all like different things, but isn't Disney for children?

OP posts:
JazbayGrapes · 05/09/2024 19:37

I think I'd rather be a bit wholesome watching Moana than implying people were obviously molesting children for liking an animated film.

I'm not sure about Disney, but Harry Potter fandom has seriously deranged people sharing very disturbing things online. I did stumble by accident and couldn't get it out of my head for a while. You think you protect your kids from online porn and graphic violence, but then they get into something that is supposed for kids, and holy shit!

We’ve been to Disney World in Florida maybe 8 times (the one in Paris is awful). We can afford to travel a lot, and go to many countries but we love Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom. We love going on the rides, some are fantastic and everything is so clean and perfect. People are friendly. The decorations for Christmas are fantastic. °o°
We don’t stay at the Disney hotels though, because even for us it’s too much Disney and way too cramped.

Because of people like you I lie at work about where we’re going, couldn’t be bothered to explain and get shit for it. When they pay for my holiday they can decide where I go.

The funny thing is that the people who question why we would want to go again are those who never have been are and would never take their kids. Or the people who can’t afford it. They’d happily go to the same AI in Turkey, or the same caravan park year after year. Which I don’t question, because why would I.

Why don’t you like Paris? The Disneyland hotel there is head and shoulders above the US ones we’ve stayed in and Space Mountain has loops . It’s impeccably clean too. I get that California/Anaheim has a certain patina after this many years and “ authenticity “( in as far as Disney can be authentic!) But just wondering what you don’t like?

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 05/09/2024 19:38

Why can't we let people enjoy things? Whats wrong with liking something legal and harmless.

TortillasAndSalsa · 05/09/2024 19:40

I really like Disney and have been to Disneyland Paris a few times and walt Disney world twice. My development is in no way arrested contrary to what some pp think. I don't ram my liking of Disney down anyone's throat just like people don't ram their hobbies and likes down mine

Nearly. I said nearly cry. Lump in my throat, watery eyes. Staring straight ahead at the screen so hopefully nobody notices.

As far as DD is concerned, Dad is unbothered. Dad doesn't cry. Except when Buffys Mum dies. Or Toothless kills Hiccups Dad in How To Train Your Dragon. Because anyone who fails to cry at those is dead inside.

And as another poster asked you. Why? Why does it matter if DD see's me cry? It's good to see that adults have emotions too, that sometimes men get scared and upset too. It helps them understand that its OK for them to do.

I struggle to cry at real life. When my Mum died I didn't cry for months and months. The emotion was too big to process and it wanted to come out as anger instead, which I had to push down constantly for months. Crying would have been healthier. And when it happened, it was. Throughout those months I could hear my Dad in my head "Big Boys don't cry."

Fuck that. Crying at a disney movie doesn't make me less masculine, doesn't make me less of a man. You trying to shame me for it makes you slightly less human though.

I love this. (And Disney)

And letting your DC see that you get upset too, even at Disney films, is healthy. It's OK to be sad that Mufasa dies in the Lion King, or whatever it is that makes you cry. Perhaps if more children saw the men in their lives cry, and knew that was OK, we wouldn't have so much of a male mental health crisis.

My DC have seen me cry at so many films now that they know when they need to pass me a tissue. (I am a woman if that's relevant)

I'd love to be a Disney adult. Unfortunately my family have fuck all magic in them, so I'm a museum
Mum instead.

One day I'm going to do Disney on my own.

Love this post!

Golaz · 05/09/2024 19:45

IMHO encanto is pure genius.

Definitely not just for kids.

I don’t dislike it, it’s got Disney feeling but it’s not to compare with Florida. I so wish it was!!!
I do like many of the rides though. Like Space Mountain, the SM in Florida gives me a headache for hours. 😂 But Paris doesn’t have all the rides, because obviously not as many parks. And I love Epcot and the safari at AK. !

Doesn’t have as many shops, restaurants or just authentic areas. Like it’s worth going to the toilets just for the Rapunzel theme. 😅 Plus I find people and staff are not as friendly or ’magical’, and weather not as sunny. DW in Florida is perfect, even if you don’t go on a single ride. The parades are excellent. The castle firework is fantastic, I refused to go at first but once I did it’s kind of ruined all other firework.

It’s magic that is hard to recreate I think. But so, so expensive!!

fadedrose · 05/09/2024 19:48

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 05/09/2024 18:15

Why did it cost that much? Family of four, cost maybe 4-6k for us for 2 weeks each time we went. We did all the Disney parks, Universal, we've added Busch in a few times. SeaWorld and the water park.

Not the poster you were replying to but have you been recently? We went this year, mid range Disney hotel (not Disney themed) and it cost that for a family of four, including flights and food. Prices have gone up a lot! It was our first visit but we all loved it - including my DH who did not expect to enjoy it - and we will be going back!

OP, Disney isn’t just for children. Fine if you don’t like it, but judging others for liking it isn’t great. I enjoyed the films as a child and I’ve enjoyed watching them with my DC.

GiveMeSomeWaterItsHot · 05/09/2024 19:49

No. None of the cheapskate kids have paid to be there. Definitely for adults 😜

betterangels · 05/09/2024 19:50

FatmanandKnobbin · 05/09/2024 18:53

Exactly, calling people pedophiles is supposedly just a bit of banter, however if you watch a Disney cartoon after your 18th birthday you clearly molest children.

And people like that think those who like Disney have problems?

Crazy.

Quite.

It's bizarre.

Benvolio · 05/09/2024 19:51

babyhighlandcow · 05/09/2024 19:33

Laugh in their face? Really nice.

Did you read 'depending on the relationship'? Yes, I would take the piss out of my sister or a close old friend, if either took their kids to Disney World/Land/Park whatever. It would be v funny for us both. I'm never deliberately hurtful and you are simply trying to police people.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍😍😍. Well bloody said.

And please let your DD see that you can cry @VimesandhisCardboardBoots so she doesn’t grow up to have warped and harmful attitudes like @Newpage88

It’s worth going to Disney World for Guardians of the Galaxy alone! Epcot and Animal Kingdom were our favourite parks.

babyhighlandcow · 05/09/2024 19:56

I have to say that as a family we rarely laugh as much as when we go to the not so scary Halloween party at MK, an hour or so before it starts. Haven’t stayed for the actual night. Hords of dressed up adults coming through the gates, all of them dressed up in such creative ways. None of them scary. They just go all in, and it’s not something you’d ever see here. So many people having pure fun and noone is judging anyone.

WhatNoRaisins · 05/09/2024 19:59

I retain a lot of fondness for many of the things I enjoyed as a child including both Disney and Harry Potter. I don't think these things have an age limit.

That said I'm not keen on fandoms anymore. I completely agree with that comment about people who make being a fan of something their whole identity. I remember when fandoms used to be fun and now they are almost weirdly serious.

I love Rock’n’roller coaster. If I could start my day going on that every morning I’d be happy!
Or Tower of terror.

Thanks OP for a great thread, did perhaps not go quite as you wanted, sorry for that.

Keep telling yourself

  • It doesnt effect me
  • None of my business

@VimesandhisCardboardBoots even as a little kid I think I'd have been embarrassed for my dad if he was sat crying at my Disney films.

That's really sad that you sneer at anyone, especially a man, who would reveal their vulnerability and emotion. My dad cried at Bambi when I was little and still does now, and what a fantastic role model he has been for the emotional maturity I expect from men.

To those who think Disney is just for children, may I quote Walt Disney's 1955 Disneyland opening day speech:

"To all that come to this happy place, welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America... with hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."

Disneyland was never intended to be just for children. Walt designed it for the young AND the young at heart.

I don’t care about adults being into Disney. Do
find the idealising of it as the epitome of fun and happiness as the strange thing though. This quote sums it up for me because the ‘hard facts’ that created America are for me colonialism, slavery and the massacre and subsequent oppression of of the indigenous people. Not Disneyworld and the consumerist franchise. It’s just that false juxtaposition.

Figment1982 · 05/09/2024 20:20

@babyhighlandcow I know what you mean about the cast members in Paris v Florida. I was in DLP this weekend and was amused by an ice-cream seller, in response to another guest asking where the nearest cash machine was, just shrug and say 'I don't know'. I commented to DH that a WDW cast member would NEVER respond that way.

Having said that, we needed the Concierge whilst there as I was hospitalised, and they were SO helpful then.. I felt that the cast members in Paris were more genuine - they were not going to go out of their way for stupid queries, but when they could see it was important they came through!

Calamitousness · 05/09/2024 20:22

Yes @stardii it’s awful. Disney in the context of adults wearing clothes with characters and having those awful ornaments etc.
watching a film from Disney is probably ok. But there are adults who are wayyyyy to into it. And it’s quite immature people I know that have done this. I know them, not friends with them. We have nothing in common and the Disney thing is a turn off on so many levels.

Newsenmum · 05/09/2024 20:25

Really? I’m not that into Disney but I still get it. Fun, colourful, safe and nostalgic. I get why people love it. Different but like Harry Potter , bad hallmark movies or drinking hot chocolate or anything else that is and fun and escapist.

Yes, this is exactly it. When my daughter was little we went to MK for the first time. There was a very happy man in maybe his 60’s who was sweeping and whistling. He looked at my dd with her little Rapunzel t-shirt on, sat down and said ’Oh, I see you are here to see the other princesses, well the castle is that way. Have a magical day!’ And I know it’s fake and all, but it was still in such a genuine and nice way. My dd looked at her dad with the biggest smile and said ’dad, he thought I was a princess!’ I mean, it’s the little things that make memories..

I hope you got well quickly?
