Wedding guest dress - it’s cream

Thehonestbadger · 05/09/2024 06:34

But it’s covered in polkadots, does this make it acceptable?

love this dress and the lady in the shop described it as the ‘perfect’ wedding guest dress but obviously she wants to sell it. I just keep thinking it’s a lot of cream.

It's lovely and the polka dots make it obvious that you're not the bride.

It's not about not looking like a bride. No one is going to mistake OP for the bride.

wizzler · 05/09/2024 07:25

I love the polka dot one best and think it's fine for a wedding. However I would possibly avoid it if I was in the main bridal party as I agree with a pp that the dots would be shouty in photos with very small groups
But honestly you look stunning in it so buy it anyway

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 05/09/2024 07:26

The second dress if you style it right, a Shrimps bag (you can get cheap dupes) and big statement scrunchie (or statement headband) could look lovely. (And what most of the fashion forward aristo girls were wearing to weddings as guests the past few years)

I was advised to put yourself in the brides shoes. If you were the bride and be upset/annoyed at a guest for wearing the cream dress then don't wear it. Personally I would avoid white, cream and/or black for a wedding outfit.. better safe than sorry and I think it's just more respectful to the bride.

The dress is lovely and perfect for other occasions.

Exactly

its not about anyone ‘mistaking her for the bride’ this dress doesn’t look ‘bridal’ in the slightest. But social norms and ideal photography conditions mean that only the bride wears white/cream/ivory.

the donut who showed up to my best mate’s wedding in a cream broderie anglaise dress didn’t look remotely bridal either. Yet in the photos your eyes go to her, and people were muttering out of her earshot despite people saying on mumsnet that no one cares.

my mate wasn’t a bridezilla and it was a very low key wedding but people are still allowed to be the main character on their bloody wedding day.

teenmaw · 05/09/2024 07:32

I don't get it, I really wouldn't give a shit about someone else turning up
in an actual wedding gown to my wedding. The dot one is nicer but I agree both are a bit middle aged grumpy for me. I don't know what you look like or age but you have a lovely figure, nice hair etc so I suspect your fashion sense is putting years on you. Try some stuff a bit trendier? Out of these tho I'd choose the dots, you do look nice in it despite it not being my taste

RedSuedePump · 05/09/2024 07:33

There’s enough doubt in your mind that you’ve asked the question on here - which means you’ll probably spend the day worrying it’s “too cream”. why risk your enjoyment of the day because of a dress!

personally i think it is too pale and wouldn’t wear it - the blue one is lovely so i’d go for that one.

As for your DH - he isn’t the one wearing it and won’t be the one some people might be raising an eyebrow at so….🤷‍♀️

agree with PP that you have a lovely figure - i’d love to be able to wear that blue dress!

onfiree · 05/09/2024 06:39

No, it’s definitely not the perfect wedding guest dress. Firstly it’s a bit boring. It’s giving workwear and it definitely looks too close to white. You need to remember that photos may be taken in different lighting that makes it look more white too.

I think there’s hundreds of dresses out there that would look better, and also not potentially cause annoyance

This.

Based on your comments, before I even got to see the picture you had attached, I thought "Wow, that sounds like a pushy sales person trying to sell a dress and for a wedding guest to wear too".

If you have every other colour except for ivory, cream, and all the hints of white, why would you go for a cream dress whatever decoration/pattern might be on the dress?

I mean if that was a navy dress with yellow polka dots or brown with cream dots, then that would be fine. Except it's not.

Please pick a different colour. There really is every other colour under the sun out there and cream is the primary one you're selecting??? It won't go unnoticed.

JanefromLondon1 · 05/09/2024 07:19

They're both middle aged and safe. The cut of the first one is awful.

Still blue, what about this? Bit more on trend.

How is that less “middle aged and safe” than the poker dot dress?

LookItsMeAgain · 05/09/2024 07:41

The blue dress reminds me of something seen in the 1930's and 1940's when material was in scarce supply and women made their own clothes for functionality and not style. I'm sorry but I really don't think it's flattering you at all.

You do have a lovely figure but neither of those dresses are suitable wedding guest attire (imo).

Apolloneuro · 05/09/2024 07:41

What’s the neckline like on the blue dress? It’s a lovely colour.

It’s definitely not just on mn that most people would say avoid white/cream. I knew that years before I’d even heard of mn.

I don’t think you’ve found your dress yet, @Thehonestbadger Have you got time to shop again?

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 05/09/2024 07:42

Your figure is gorgeous. There are nicer dresses out there. I'm going to pretend I didn't read the bit about you having kids 😂

The spots are awful , especially in a group photograph, guest are meant to blend in, not stand out.

Apolloneuro · 05/09/2024 07:45

The black spots don’t stop it being a white/cream dress.

If you were going to a formal funeral, the dress in black with white spots wouldn’t be a black dress. If you wouldn’t wear a black based version to a funeral, the opposite version isn’t appropriate for a wedding.

Cheersmedears123 · 05/09/2024 07:46

The polka dot dress is lovely and very elegant. I think it would look perfectly fine at a wedding. I had a few women wearing totally white dresses at mine and it wasn’t an issue. I was obviously the bride and they looked fab.

It’s absolutely fine. It has huge black spots on it!! Add a bright pink wrap, shoes and bag and you will look great. Not like a bride at all. Can’t stand this fuss that some people (women as men don’t care) have over white.

men don’t have this problem with looking like the groom!!

Alongthepineconetrail · 05/09/2024 07:51

The style suits you but it's more of a races day dress than a wedding guest dress. Is it available in another colour?

blahblahblah24 · 05/09/2024 07:51

It's nice. Not remotely bridal.

Geminijust · 05/09/2024 07:54

Maybe I'm out of touch but I had no idea white/cream at a wedding was such a big no no unless it was long/lacy and basically looked like a wedding dress. That looks nothing like a wedding dress! I'm now cringing as I wore a cream shift dress to a wedding 25 years ago. I had black accessories (shoes/bag/hat) and looked nothing like the bride, who actually wasn't wearing white as I recall. Pretty sure my friend wore a cream trouser sut too. They're still speaking to us 🤣 Is black a no no too? I wore a black & white dress to another wedding, oh god.......

urbanbuddha · 05/09/2024 07:54

I’m with your DH and the shop lady on the blue dress. It’s inoffensive, but it does nothing for you and might make you look a bit pallid (I don’t know - I can’t see you properly!). The other dress really highlights your figure.

I don't know anyone who'd wear that to work.

usernother · 05/09/2024 07:56

Dress is lovely and looks great on you. Perfect for a wedding.

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 05/09/2024 07:59

Thehonestbadger · 05/09/2024 07:14

@Fairyliz 😂 it’s me wearing it but I’ve had two kids so I can promise you it do have wobbly bits it’s just a flattering cut.

So I’m gonna share my favourite dress of the day but neither DH nor the shop lady seemed to like it (it’s light blue)

Comparing the two the cream one definitely suits you better, but they are both beautiful.
The cream with a tailored jacket black heels and clutch bag is perfect wedding attire, mind you so is the blue 😂 sorry not really helping much am I 😂
I think the cream xx 👍

Deadringer · 05/09/2024 08:00

I think the Polka dot one is lovely and looks fabulous on you. The blue one is very dull imo.

Sunshineclouds11 · 05/09/2024 08:00

It's not about it looking bridal but the colour.

Lovely dress, for the races. Does it come on any other colours?

I don't like the blue one.
