To think this is too early for a house guest to get up?

My husband's sister and her husband are staying over for the weekend. They don't have children we have two young teens but they are both at friends this weekend.

DBIL has just gone to bed and cheerily announced as he did that he would be going out for a run at 6.00am and would bring a key (they have a spare as they house sit sometimes). Plus he casually mentioned something about making a smoothie beforehand so it actually sounds like he's getting up at more like 5.30am.

Neither DH or I are confrontational and so we both just sort of sat there shocked. But I am just not sure what to say. Our house isn't tiny but equally I am pretty sure all his getting ready etc is going to mean we wake up. And weekend lie ins are rare with two kids and associated activities!

I mean I guess he could be joking but he's not really that kind of person. His wife (DH sister) is normally quite sensible and she didn't seem at all embarrassed about it which is making me worry we are the weird ones for being a bit horrified!

Has he woken you all up?

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/09/2024 06:05

Surely OP should replying by now Grin

UserNameOfShame · 01/09/2024 06:08

Placemarking to find out if he woke them up!

Lampzade · 01/09/2024 06:16

YABU
It is not as though he is asking you to make the bloody smoothie ffs.
It honestly wouldn’t bother me
I can’t believe the things people choose to get outraged about

mathanxiety · 01/09/2024 06:17

Yes to hiding the blender.

He's going to wake you up regardless. He'll use the loo, flush, walk on a squeaky step. It's pretty rude of him.

mathanxiety · 01/09/2024 06:20

And when he gets back an hour later, he'll hop into the shower...

FGS nobody in the history of the universe has ever seen a "Polite notice" and thought how nice it was. Just let him crack on and dont treat him like a baby with notes left for him, unless you want them to never return.

There's an idea somewhere in there.

Re the ingredients - he's brought loads of stuff with him,.I didn't really bat an eyelid as he's very health obsessed so is making his own meals (I mean ours are perfectly healthy - and DH is a really good cook- but BIL is very particular about what he eats so brings lots of different supplements and bits like that)

Insufferable.

OneTooFree · 01/09/2024 06:27

I would have taken the fuse out of the plug then accused him of breaking it.

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 01/09/2024 06:27

Intrigued to see if BIL woke op or not 😄

TokyoSushi · 01/09/2024 06:29

Just posting here to see what happened Grin (Disclaimer: I'm on holiday in Turkey so it's actually 8:30 here!!)

Vallmo47 · 01/09/2024 06:35

I got up at 6 just to find out if he used the blender or not….

Going for a morning swim in reality, but I crept downstairs and sitting in silence with a yoghurt for company. 😄

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/09/2024 06:42

#SmoothieWatch

Nextlevel · 01/09/2024 06:43

Getting up for a run at that time seems fairly normal to me and I've done it staying with friends, but only super quietly and for sure creeping out without waking everyone else up if they don't like getting up early, ditto coming back in. Or I'd maybe take post run jumper and some cash and go get a coffee/smoothie somewhere after my run if places are open, and stay out till I thought folk more likely to be getting up. But sounds like there wouldn't be places open where you are ...Im a super early riser and exerciser though, but understand others hate early mornings.

Slowbrow · 01/09/2024 06:43

OP not up yet... does this mean SmoothieGate never eventuated?

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 01/09/2024 06:47

FFS OP I set an alarm this morning so I wouldn’t miss the smoothie apocalypse and there’s no updates. So I guess he either got out the house quietly, or he is dead from malnutrition

DreamW3aver · 01/09/2024 06:52

OneTooFree · 01/09/2024 06:27

I would have taken the fuse out of the plug then accused him of breaking it.

That's an unusual approach, even assuming the blender has an old fashioned plug to take the fuse out of why would you make up childish nonsense about him breaking it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/09/2024 06:54

Hoping as op hasn't replied she hasn't had her night /morning disturbed

Run fine. Be quiet

Smoothie no way at 530am or even 8am on an one off lie in

But why not say that last night ?

DreamW3aver · 01/09/2024 06:57

Pippifer · 01/09/2024 00:21

Honestly I doubt the blender will wake you up. My and my flatmate used to have breakfast smoothies A LOT at various times of the morning and it was never a problem even in a small flat. You’re more likely to be disturbed by someone walking around/up and down stairs at 5.30am.

Anyway do I think getting up at someone else’s house at 5.30am is a bit off - yes. But I’d say it’s less rude than a guest sleeping in til 10.30am/11am.

What kind of blender did you have? I've owned a few different ones over the years and they've all been the most appliances, I can't imagine one not waking me up

But anyway thats by the by, the OP knows she would be woken up.

Alli88 · 01/09/2024 06:57

So you want him to lie awake and not move until you are awake?! Don't think he's the cheeky one 🙄

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 01/09/2024 06:57

I hate staying at people's houses as I naturally wake up at 5:30am (it's even worse in other people's houses) and I'm always waiting to hear noise before I get up and showered and go down to breakfast for fear of waking someone.

I've never been one to sleep in.

Squashinthepinkcup · 01/09/2024 07:03

These morning comments are gold 😂

Pipsquiggle · 01/09/2024 07:05

I am here for the outcome. Hoping OP got her lie in

SquirrelSoShiny · 01/09/2024 07:07

Maybe he woke the household and the OP is now blending his remains to dispose of them...

LeontineFrance · 01/09/2024 07:09

This is why I never stay with relatives because, if you invite someone into your house, you are also inviting in their ways and means, especially family.
