Not removing sunglasses - unreasonable?

coxesorangepippin · 31/08/2024 15:49

Met up with a friend yesterday, who introduced me to her sister.

We sat outside, it was sunny.

The sister did not remove her sunglasses the entire time (2 hours).

It bothered me. I couldn't see her eyes.

Aibu?

I wear glasses and I’m not spending time changing between glasses and sunglasses just so someone can see my eyes!

Would it really kill you to raise your sunglasses for all of 15 seconds to acknowledge and make eye contact when introduced to someone new? It’s basic manners.

I find that really irritating too. I think you should reveal your eyes when interacting with others. I dont know where to look if someone keeps their sunglasses when socialising and talking to me.

So they should sit in discomfort with the sun in their eyes instead?
I don’t think some people realise how bad sunlight is for your eyes. I wouldn’t spend 2 hours without mine on in the sun just so that someone else wasn’t irritated by me.
Raise your glasses for a second upon meeting… seems unnecessary to me but ok, happy to do that to be polite.
Sit with my eyes exposed to bright sunlight for 2 hours so that someone I haven’t met before doesn’t feel irritated… absolutely not.

It wouldn’t even cross my mind to. I am wearing what I need to see in the conditions.

iolaus · 31/08/2024 19:03

What those of us who are wearing prescription sunglasses are saying is that we raise our sunglasses we aren't making eye contact with you because WE CAN'T SEE YOUR EYES never mind focus on themto have that meaningful interaction

I was always taught that wearing sunglasses in company was rude.

Clearly your friend wasn't brought up properly.

Is this a serviette/napkin thing? What other protective equipment is banned, can I still wear gloves in the cold? Do I need to put my umbrella down in a storm and get rained on in the interests of etiquette?

The Royal Family are happy to wear sunglasses in company.

15 times the royal family's sunglasses were pure chaotic energy

Baby Prince Harry in speed dealers is 😂🙌

Yabu.

I don't remove my sunglasses if I'm outside and it's daytime. They are prescription so I cannot see without them! I often keep them on indoors too... especially when I go into shops.

Same. I often leave my prescription sunglasses on indoors for my convenience. I can see so.....

Outside my eyes are extremely photosensitive and glare is one of my migraine triggers, if I'm outside and it's even vaguely sunny, sunglasses are on.

Why do you think you have the right to demand to see someone's eyes OP ?

Exactly! I’m not taking my normal glasses out of my bag to put them on for a second just so someone can think I have made eye contact!

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 19:10

Because she can see their soul in their eyes of course

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 31/08/2024 19:10

I wear my sunglasses in my kitchen if it's really sunny. I seem to be really photosensitive.

I don't really get why you want someone to be uncomfortable and squint into the sun so you can 'see her eyes'.

I mean, you've seen them before right?

Do you need the purpose of prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses explaining ?

Why is it rude ? Sunglasses are not a fashion item (admittedly they might be for some people but they're really not), they're protective equipment to protect your eyes from the sun.

Pippifer · 31/08/2024 19:13

I do think it’s polite to remove sunnies when saying hi and bye but it’s not really the end of the world if people don’t. I definitely wouldn’t expect someone to keep sunnies off the whole time if chatting in the sun for 2 hours!

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 31/08/2024 19:14

I don't really buy the concept that wearing sunglasses is rude.

Says fucking who?

Sirzy · 31/08/2024 19:16

If I took my sunglasses off so you could see my eyes they wouldn’t be looking at you - without the inbuilt prism them would both be looking at the end of my nose!

LlynTegid · 31/08/2024 19:16

I would ask if the sister would prefer to be indoors.

PiggieWig · 31/08/2024 19:17

Yabu, however I did once go on a date with a guy who wore mirrored sunglasses for the whole time and it did feel a bit weird.

BashfulClam · 31/08/2024 19:18

My DH didn’t take his sunglasses off today because they are prescription ones. His ordinary glasses were in the car. Without his glasses he can’t see shit. I’m similar I can only see about 6 inches ahead before it’s blurred. Without my glasses or lenses I couldn’t even go downstairs as I can’t actually see them properly. Maybe she was in a similar situation.

RollaCola84 · 31/08/2024 19:19

Whatthebarnacles · 31/08/2024 17:38

I wore my sunglasses today and went for a drive and to the park. Went grocery shopping afterwards and realised that I'd left my actual glasses at home so had no choice but to wear sunglasses indoors else I wouldn't have been able to see at all!
If anyone found me rude - so what!
My point being, you have no idea why she had them on, stop making it about you.

I've worn my prescription sunglasses all day in work having realised when I got in I'd left my glasses at home. The alternative being not being able to see.....

colourfulchinadolls · 31/08/2024 19:21

Of course you are being fucking unreasonable.

I get migraines if I don't wear sunglasses.

Why do you need to see her eyes?

Wearing sunglasses in company isn't 'rude' as some have suggested 😂

Coconutter24 · 31/08/2024 19:22

I bet she didn’t even get up and curtsy on your arrival either, what a cow 😂

KreedKafer · 31/08/2024 19:31

We sat outside, it was sunny.

Can you seriously not grasp the connection between those two statements?

People wear sunglasses to keep the sun out of their eyes. If, while sitting in the sun for two hours, they had to take their sunglasses in order to have a chat, the existence of sunglasses would be completely fucking pointless.

TL;DR: It isn’t rude or inappropriate to wear sunglasses in the sun.

Chipbarm · 31/08/2024 19:32

@Nothanks17 I do this, what do your family etc think of it? My Dh thinks it’s weird when I do

KreedKafer · 31/08/2024 19:32

LlynTegid · 31/08/2024 19:16

I would ask if the sister would prefer to be indoors.

And the sister would, correctly, wonder why you were being passive aggressive and weird

RaininSummer · 31/08/2024 19:33

I don't think it's rude but I do find it really hard to have a conversation if somebody is wearing dark glasses. It's like no-one is home.
