Not removing sunglasses - unreasonable?

coxesorangepippin · 31/08/2024 15:49

Met up with a friend yesterday, who introduced me to her sister.

We sat outside, it was sunny.

The sister did not remove her sunglasses the entire time (2 hours).

It bothered me. I couldn't see her eyes.

Aibu?

Wow. Are people really this uptight.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/08/2024 16:06

I wore a hat once, and it wasn't raining. 😳

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 31/08/2024 16:06

Outside in the sun? That's completely normal.

She doesn't need a reason, but she could be prone to headaches, they could be prescription sunglasses and she doesn't see the point of switching back to her normal ones since she's still outside, she could have sensitive eyes.

Or she could just not want the sun in her eyes.

anareen · 31/08/2024 16:06

Who cares......?

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 16:07

You should share your eyes - it prevents damage

midgetastic · 31/08/2024 16:07

Shade ! Not share - that would be wierd

sunshinechaser · 31/08/2024 16:08

This is a joke isn't it? I have pale skin and blue eyes and can't tolerate the sun at all. If I was with someone in a sunny garden I would keep my sunglasses on the whole time.

My optician said you should always have sun glasses on outside in bright weather to reduce the incidence of cataract in later life. I'm not good as I have varifocals and haven't got prescription ones but do find bright sun uncomfortable. Maybe your friend is the same

Yep, sunglasses with adequate UV protection do prevent damage and reduce cataract risk.

I was always taught that wearing sunglasses in company was rude.

Clearly your friend wasn't brought up properly.

Surely it’s pretty rude to expect someone to squint in bright sunlight when they could wear sunglasses against the glare, just so you can see their eyes?

It does seem a bit rude not to for a very short time .However sitting outside in the sun is exactly what they are made for .I would have kept mine on as described as I'm prone to headaches in bright sunshine.

Why rude?

I wear reactalites and if I remove my glasses then I can't see.

Cherrysoup · 31/08/2024 16:11

Yabu. What if, like me, she had on prescription transitions? I wouldn’t know my own mother across the table were I not wearing my glasses. I have no reason to remove them and render myself unable to see, plus I have no choice on how dark they get.

mushpush · 31/08/2024 16:11

I think this is just one of those things that's a "you" issue - you were outside, in the sun - perfectly appropriate conditions to wear sunglasses 😎

GoodnightJude1 · 31/08/2024 16:11

Time for a hobby OP.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 31/08/2024 16:11

My sunglasses are prescription varifocals - I can't see without them. I wear them more often than my ordinary glasses - they are far more relaxing for my eyes.

And if someone thought that it was rude, I would think that they were ignorant.

Or whoever told you that was wrong.

I do take mine off briefly, because not seeing each other's eyes does change communication. But my eyes are light sensitive and they are prescription, so I leave them on as much as possible.

NoraLuka · 31/08/2024 16:14

I was always taught to take sunglasses off when saying hello to people, and that keeping them on is rude although it’s okay to put them back on again after you’ve said hello.

Maybe you should have been brought up to understand that if someone is wearing sunglasses in company there is probably a physical reason and it would be unkind to judge.

ntmdino · 31/08/2024 16:14

Autistic here too. I wear wraparound sunglasses all the time outdoors, and a lot of the time indoors too (eg coffee shops, supermarkets etc). It's absolutely necessary for me so that I can reduce the sensory input far enough that I can actually concentrate on the conversation.

Even if your friend isn't like me...she's obviously wearing them for comfort. Your hangups about eye contact are your problem, and not a good enough reason for her to make herself uncomfortable.

@BrigadierEtienneGerard

in what way does 'being in company' stop the sun being so bright & damaging one's eyes?

JanefromLondon1 · 31/08/2024 16:17

Mine are prescription and I wouldn't bother swapping sunglasses for normal glasses if I needed the sunglasses as was outside in the sun. You're weird.

Luluem · 31/08/2024 16:19

If meeting someone new I always take my sunglasses off to say hello, nice to meet you etc, and then put them back on. I think it’s rude for me not to do that for that 10 second interaction, I feel people haven’t “seen” you properly otherwise!

SunshineAndFizz · 31/08/2024 16:20

The nerve of her.

At least tell me she stood up when you entered/left the table and did a bow?

Homesweethome23 · 31/08/2024 16:20

I wear sunglasses as soon as I step outside, even in winter! My eyes are very sensitive to light.

It’s not rude.

TheBirdintheCave · 31/08/2024 16:21

Brickiscool · 31/08/2024 15:56

I have very pale blue eyes and nerve damage in one eye, I never remove mine. I also wear them on what other people might consider quite qrey days. That awful white sky we have in the UK in the winter when it's not warm or sunny is the worst .

I always say 'It may not be sunny but it's still bright!'
