Not removing sunglasses - unreasonable?

coxesorangepippin · 31/08/2024 15:49

Met up with a friend yesterday, who introduced me to her sister.

We sat outside, it was sunny.

The sister did not remove her sunglasses the entire time (2 hours).

It bothered me. I couldn't see her eyes.

Aibu?

It's basic manners to take them off, even if it's just momentarily, so you can make eye contact with the person you're spending time with. It's about developing trust. It won't kill anyone to take them off for 5 seconds to say hello.

What??? So you can't say hello to someone without taking off sunglasses?
What about people that have an eye condition so have to wear glasses? What about people wearing those glasses that darken in sunlight?
It was outside on a sunny day, it was a perfectly normal thing to do.

There are many like this. Behind those sunglasses her eyes are yellow with black vertical lines through the centre.

Be careful out there - they are multiplying.

Soon more will come and we will be outnumbered.

You are lucky she didn’t remove those glasses.

One glance from those naked yellow eyes and it’s goodnight.

Alright flat earth Stanley 😂

Redruby2020 · 31/08/2024 17:04

🫣🤣 Omg as someone who suffers with anxiety and does this, this is hilarious that someone else's issue with something has to be accommodated by the person wearing them.
I have others who don't like me having them on too. I've had people make comments too, it's ridiculous.

Haha. OP I know where you are coming from.

If I were meeting someone new and I had sunglasses on. I would instinctively lift them up - smile and say hello etc..for the initial connection. Then put them on again.

Isn’t it basic manners?

I do this exactly so I have voted yanbu. You can still see through the prescription ones that transition so I’m guessing these are not what the OP is referring to.

I have very pale blue eyes and nerve damage in one eye, I never remove mine. I also wear them on what other people might consider quite qrey days. That awful white sky we have in the UK in the winter when it's not warm or sunny is the worst .

Me too. And I've had comments of it's not sunny, so that's it then 🤔🤦‍♀️😂 I can't wear them.

Seek help.

Ethylred · 31/08/2024 17:11

If I remembered I would take my sunglasses off when being introduced and then replace them.

Stephy1886 · 31/08/2024 17:11

It was sunny

why would you want someone to squint for 2 hours?

if she had them on indoors then that’s a different matter.

give yourself a shake

Yabu.

I don't remove my sunglasses if I'm outside and it's daytime. They are prescription so I cannot see without them! I often keep them on indoors too... especially when I go into shops.

This. I really struggle to see without my glasses on and my sunglasses are also prescription!

JMSA · 31/08/2024 17:13

YABU.

shufflestep · 31/08/2024 17:13

YABU - I am so short sighted (-13), that I can only see with glasses on. In order to not have my prescription sunglasses on I would have to change to my normal glasses, then back. What benefit would that be to you?

maimeo · 31/08/2024 17:14

Like @Ifyounevergiveup and @NoraLuka ,I automatically pull my sunglasses down when meeting someone new to smile and say hello. In fact I often do it when meeting anyone I know, but maybe not particularly well, as it's easier for them to recognise me. But I leave them on then as I have sensitive eyes and am also prone to migraines in sunny weather.

tiggergoesbounce · 31/08/2024 17:14

I think if you are talking to someone, to keep sunglasses on is rude, but not outside in the sun, that's what they are made for.

Boomer55 · 31/08/2024 17:14

I wear sunglasses, outside when it’s sunny. Otherwise I squint and get a headache…🙄🤷‍♀️

QuickScroller · 31/08/2024 17:15

I have very sensitive eyes so always wear my sunglasses in the sun! Can’t see what the problem is?

Animatic · 31/08/2024 17:16

Yabu. I instinctively remove sunglasses when I get introduced to new people (if I have a pair on of course) but never gave a tho8ght to it,and wouldn't be offended if someone didn't remove them.

I hope they were not those dark mirrored once where u can see 2 reflections :)

Thedogscollar · 31/08/2024 17:18

Well you're either a bored child on your Mum's account or you're too embarrassed to return to the thread OP. Which is it?

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 31/08/2024 17:18

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 31/08/2024 16:01

I was always taught that wearing sunglasses in company was rude.

Clearly your friend wasn't brought up properly.

Were you brought up to understand that some people wear glasses to see, and need prescription ones? Or that if it's very sunny, the glare off glasses can make it even harder to see so you squint harder? Or in a time before reactions lenses were a thing, which they have been for years because I remember my uncle having them when I was small. They go darker in brighter light and the tint fades as it gets darker outside.

It's not rude to make sure you can see.

Just when you think threads can't get any weirder...

or any more mean and lacking in empathy.

I won't comment for fear of causing offence.

Toottooot · 31/08/2024 17:21

Maybe she suffers from synkinesis and is self conscious?

Spitalfieldrose · 31/08/2024 17:22

My sun glasses are prescription so I can’t see without them, maybe hers are too. Also you were outside. Frankly you are being a bit weird about it.

StormingNorman · 31/08/2024 17:23

Why would she remove her sunglasses if you were sat in the sun?

laveritable · 31/08/2024 17:23

Do you realise a lot of people have eye conditions and they would rather keep this to themselves!!

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2024 17:23

I get it OP. I'd feel like I hadn't really met her. Eyes are the windows of the soul and all that. You probably wouldn't recognize her if you saw her again.
