To think my neighbours win a prize for being the first people to

Put up their CHRISTMAS TREE!

I heard them arguing last night when getting ready for bed and only half heartedly paid attention that it had something to do with a light being broken. We both had our windows open but the discussion was pretty loud and they only live across the road. However, at no point did I even remotely consider that they were talking about Christmas lights. I shut the curtains, went to bed and when I woke up this morning I'm met with a fully decorated Christmas tree standing full view in the front window!

So do they win some sort of prize it's still the bloody summer holidays or has someone else beaten them to it?

It was bad enough that I noticed the supermarket had Christmas food in yesterday!

LlynTegid · 31/08/2024 19:14

Valid reasons I can think of:

They could be planning to be away over Christmas.

One of them has a relative who is terminally ill and so they want to have their celebration early in case said person dies before Christmas.
Or one of them has a terminal illness.
The woman is pregnant and their child is due around then.
A bet with someone they can be first.
A plan to film/photo it now given the light is better, and so better for their instagram page.

I volunteer in a charity shop and there was lots of chat on the WhatsApp group last night about how we are getting a Christmas card delivery on Monday and how ridiculously early that is, and how we're not putting them out until November.

I always think there must be something lacking in people's lives if they can't just enjoy September/October/November for what they are instead of squealing and squeaking about Christmas for a third of the year.

Not putting cards out until November just means many will buy them elsewhere. It doesn't give enough time to buy them. Procrastinate writing them, and get them
to the post office for overseas cards.

Years ago when DS1 was at uni in France we did Christmas at October half term as they weren’t coming back for Christmas that year. Turkey, crackers, presents, decorations indoors (no the tree though)

it was up for about a week and visitors were a bit surprised but it all came down until just before Christmas.

Would you know if there's anyone in the house that's very ill?

personally I think that's the only reason I'd put up the tree in August.

I thought the exact same 😢

That's v crazily early so maybe there is a family member that isn't well.
I tend to notice people putting them up from early November which I dint get..but the ones that put them up super early as rney love a tree so much...always take the thing down on boxing day as want the space back?!
As a child ours was usually up mid December/week before Xmas but left up til 12th night or just before back.to school

@1974devon

i like mine up early (early Nov) but I also take them down late. Year before last I held out until candlemas!

ThisOchreLemur · 31/08/2024 19:27

Is it a christmas tree or a halloween tree? I did not know that was a thing but I've seen in some forums people putting a halloween theme tree on their living rooms

pollymere · 31/08/2024 19:36

I bet they'll take it down on Boxing Day too...

That's what annoys me as I was brought up with the tree going up on the 19th and staying there until 6 Jan.

Coco1379 · 31/08/2024 19:40

If you compare it with the man who has christmas every day - complete with pud and present…

Melonmango70 · 31/08/2024 19:58

My Mum once left her tree up all year (only a little table top one, about 3ft) because it was easier than putting it back in the loft....

Yes exactly the same. The ones that go on about putting it up early then clear it all away on boxing day?!

PandaChopChop · 31/08/2024 20:06

I did pull all the Christmas Dec's to the front if the storage cupboard (and packed all the camping stuff behind it) but it will stay there until 1st December 🤣
My sister loves Christmas and she would happily put her decorations up in October if her DP let her 🤣

Engagebrain · 31/08/2024 20:27

Dementia?

KittyBeebee · 31/08/2024 20:50

Did it sound like a drunken argument? Maybe they woke up hungover this morning saying What the hell did we get up to last night? 😂

Pupinskipops · 31/08/2024 21:22

Perhaps they saw the mince pies that Sainsbury's already have on their shelves and got confused...

Coco2024 · 31/08/2024 21:54

I saw Halloween decorations and Xmas decorations in hobbycraft yesterday and thought that was looopy enough! It’s summer! I’m not ready to let go of summer yet

Auburngal · 31/08/2024 22:12

There are two extremes. One lot put up their tree in late August.

Then get people who ask me on 16th December if we still have any advent calendars! Why on earth would anyone be hunting for an advent calendar less than 10 days before the day itself? I remember it was Dec 16th as know someone who has a birthday that day

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 31/08/2024 22:13

Are they instagramers maybe making a reel or something?

Hollybobs1 · 31/08/2024 23:00

Last weekend, I was driving home in the evening and 2 separate houses had all of their Christmas decorations up. Inside and outside! I attempted to persuade my partner to allow me to put ours up but he said no because it's too early apparently 😒

Growing up we had very eccentric nutty neighbours (lovely family though!) and their house was really messy. One year their Christmas tree was up till summer (mind you, they were burgled one time and didn't notice for 3 months).

shittestusernameever · 01/09/2024 11:15

My sisters friend has her tree up all year, she just changes the decorating for Easter, Halloween etc.. odd

They probably thought other burglars had got there first 🤣

CrushingOnRubies · 01/09/2024 13:09

I put up our tree in September last year but only because I ordered it online in a sale and wanted to check the lights worked etc

Maybe it's that

Laundryblue · 01/09/2024 15:52

Sainsbury's have started to sell mince pies and tubs of Heroes, Quality Street etc.
Happy Christmas!!!

rainbowbee · 01/09/2024 15:55

I have a friend who once did a Christmas in September because a family member wasn't going to make it that long and wanted it.
I also did a Christmas shoot for a magazine job one August.
Other than exceptional circumstances that's madness though.
