To think my neighbours win a prize for being the first people to

Put up their CHRISTMAS TREE!

I heard them arguing last night when getting ready for bed and only half heartedly paid attention that it had something to do with a light being broken. We both had our windows open but the discussion was pretty loud and they only live across the road. However, at no point did I even remotely consider that they were talking about Christmas lights. I shut the curtains, went to bed and when I woke up this morning I'm met with a fully decorated Christmas tree standing full view in the front window!

So do they win some sort of prize it's still the bloody summer holidays or has someone else beaten them to it?

Went to The Range in mid July and had Halloween crap in there already.

I just got back from Disney World Florida where they started having special Halloween nights in Magic Kingdom on 8th August!

GingerPirate · 30/08/2024 09:44

Alright....
Everyone to their own...

the80sweregreat · 30/08/2024 09:45

Unbelievable! If they are arguing, maybe they are doing Christmas now and be divorced by .. well .. Christmas ?..
whatever the reason , it is too early ( not had Halloween yet)

NavyKitchen · 30/08/2024 09:48

We once put our Christmas decorations up in February because my mil had a heart attack on Christmas Day (thankfully recovered) and we decided to celebrate Christmas again. Dh's siblings and dc came over, we did a full dinner and exchanged stocking filler type presents and played board games etc. We all agreed it was one of our best Christmases yet!
Dh has a large family and it's often difficult to all commit to getting together on Christmas Day. We tried it again in 2021 because of the Covid Christmas but, typically, our household got Covid the day before and it had to be cancelled!

zingally · 30/08/2024 09:48

I thought I was early going for the first weekend in December!

Maybe they're taking a Christmas photo to make into their Christmas card this year...?

I don't think they are from the Philippines but I am curious about the logic of a country spending 1/3 of the year in preparation for just one day. What's the rational behind it??

I honestly don't really know - I think that they just really like Christmas.

Lifeomars · 30/08/2024 09:59

Seeing all the Halloween stuff in the shops has made me depressed enough, I think the sight of a fully decorated Christmas tree at the end of August would floor me. I get that people need time to budget and prepare but it feels like wishing time away for one bloody day a year

TooYoungToJoinGransnet · 30/08/2024 10:05

There's a house on my dog walk that never take them down and often have them lit throughout the year!

Bjorkdidit · 30/08/2024 10:06

OMG, when I saw your thread title, I guessed that this was what they'd done and I'm right (just been reading the Christmas chocolates thread). How weird.

This thread has reminded me of the time that DP did a job where they had to build the set for the Asda Christmas advert (put up a giant Christmas tree, lights and decorations etc in a fake Asda). That was in the spring/summer. He brought me home a poinsetta plant as there had been loads of these as part of the of theme.

Surely just leaving them up all year just makes it so much less special. I mean each to their own but it's called a Christmas tree for a reason.

See now my life mantra is 'you do you'....exept when it comes to Christmas decorations WHILST IT IS STILL SUMMER. There's an entire season to go. FFS!

I'm gonna hope it's the Christmas card thing. Also thanks to whoever suggested that as I plan to do that every year but by the time we get the house festive it's way too late 😂 note to self!!

Would you not get fed up looking at Xmas decorations for the best part of 4 months. Mine go up on the 8th Dec for a month and I'm ready to tear them down before Christmas day.

I would far rather look at twinkly lights and cheerful colors and sparkle than a sea of grey and white splattered with twee signs and naff trendy niknaks... horses for courses.

We have several 'xmas' items decorating our house as we have a 'deer' theme and most that stuff comes out at xmas... we aren't the only ones.

Years ago when back when I was younger I had those string fairy lights and room edged with LED rope lights (the kinds all kids seem to have in their bedroom now) all year round and was regularly told off with 'why are your xmas decorations up in April', 'its tacky', 'its uncouth', 'its bad luck' etc... now its literally just common and standard to have string lights up all year round.

The whole point of xmas stuff is to be joyful... who runs out of and gets bored of joy?

loudbatperson · 30/08/2024 10:18

I would guess it's for the Christmas card photo or celebrating Christmas early due to visitors or, and I am hoping not, someone is near to end of life.

I can't see anyone that doesn't live in a big department store, putting their decorations up this early.

Cherrysoup · 30/08/2024 10:18

Christmas chocolate and advent calendars in the shops already. Bonkers.

angeldelite · 30/08/2024 10:22

This is just a snapshot in their lives, you never know what’s going on behind closed doors. I suspect the spouse has weeks to live and they want one more Christmas together to live, laugh and love. Be kind.

I know many people brought Christmas forward to celebrate with a family member whi had a terminal illness, often someone quite young. I wouldn't judge.

Yes this would be my first thought, a very ill family member who might not be expected to make it to Xmas.

I mean I appreciate nobody knows everything going on in the lives of others but both have gone off to work this morning so I'm dubious one of them has weeks to live.

Its only recently that people have different themed wreaths on their front doors throughout the year, not just Christmas. When I first saw these I was thinking Christmas in September

There is a family down my road that do different ones. She had a Coronation one last May with crowns, union jacks on it. Then Easter, Halloween, Olympics/Paralympics one that is on the front door.

Think the lady of the house makes them.

I've seen them done for Diwali, I thought it was a lovely mix of customs.

I don't put up a Xmas tree until 2nd week in December unless there is a reason for earlier and want it gone on Jan 2nd . But I do mentally budget and shop with Xmas in mind from September. Tried to buy sweet tubs but always ended up eating them all way before Xmas. 😮

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 30/08/2024 10:37

When my parents moved abroad we knew we wouldn't see them at all around Christmas that year (or for a long time) as neither of us could afford the flights. We had our own Christmas in September, complete with fully decorated tree, just before they went. We took it down afterwards, but you never really know why someone does something without them actually telling you.

Dd has a mid August birthday.
Summer party in the garden planned, water pistols, paddling pools, bbq, etc

Woke up to grey skies and torrential rain.
Quite the opposite of summer.

So, a rethink was needed

Quick text to guests parents, up into the loft and got the decs down, and it became a full on xmas party instead!

Brilliant idea.

I've heard of people having early Christmas for sad reasons, someone who loves Christmas and is terminally ill and probably won't make it to December.

SummerSplashing · 30/08/2024 07:10

Would you know if there's anyone in the house that's very ill?

personally I think that's the only reason I'd put up the tree in August.

That would be my first thought or an extended family member. If not ill working away over Christmas.

c3pu · 30/08/2024 10:47

Not sure why they even bothered to take it down...

5foot5 · 30/08/2024 10:48

A few years ago DH and I were having a week in Norfolk in early October. We went to Cromer one day and were bemused to see that there was a Christmas tree up on the pier complete with lights. We wondered whether Cromer got really quiet out of season so they decided to skip straight from holiday period to Christmas.

Anyway we thought no more about it until it was nearly Christmas and then we noticed that the BBCs seasonal link between programmes that year had been filmed at Cromer so we must have been there while it was going on.

A question to anyone who actually lives in Cromer - did the BBC take the tree down after they had finished filming or did they leave it up?
