To think my neighbours win a prize for being the first people to

Put up their CHRISTMAS TREE!

I heard them arguing last night when getting ready for bed and only half heartedly paid attention that it had something to do with a light being broken. We both had our windows open but the discussion was pretty loud and they only live across the road. However, at no point did I even remotely consider that they were talking about Christmas lights. I shut the curtains, went to bed and when I woke up this morning I'm met with a fully decorated Christmas tree standing full view in the front window!

So do they win some sort of prize it's still the bloody summer holidays or has someone else beaten them to it?

School holidays ended here couple of weeks ago, as soon as the kids were back at school there was Christmas stock in the seasonal aisle in Morrisons, the mince pies aren't even making it datewise to October.

I'm sure there will be Christmas trees up shortly too.

Commercial Christmas comes quicker every year.

That is insane. Perhaps, giving them thr benefit of the doubt, they have put it up to take some sort of Christmas card photo.

My influencer friend had to do this last year for a company. Was so funny to see.

HeartandSeoul · 30/08/2024 08:45

This must be a reverse 😁😉!

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 30/08/2024 08:45

We have a friend who has to work over Xmas. They have their office Xmas party in July and the local pub puts up an Xmas tree for them.

Sethera · 30/08/2024 08:45

Our local garden centre has set up its Christmas Grotto - wasn't open last weekend but looked ready to go!

worryworrysuperscurry · 30/08/2024 08:46

That tree will be so dusty by December! I thought I'd seen the earliest one when I drove past a house a couple of years ago that had theirs up at the end of September. I did tut loudly when I saw Christmas chocolates in Sainsbury's last week though...

LookItsMeAgain · 30/08/2024 08:46

Supermarkets are already selling the large tubs of Heroes, Celebrations and Roses...so Christmas must only be around the corner. 🎅

Dd has a mid August birthday.
Summer party in the garden planned, water pistols, paddling pools, bbq, etc

Woke up to grey skies and torrential rain.
Quite the opposite of summer.

So, a rethink was needed

Quick text to guests parents, up into the loft and got the decs down, and it became a full on xmas party instead!

Blimey what a palaver. She could have had, like, a birthday party?

Auburngal · 30/08/2024 08:47

I personally say that Xmas crap in shops in August makes Christmas a let down IMHO. Plus working in retail doesn't help

Been to several countries in mainland Europe in Oct and saw very little or none at all in their shops.

If other countries can have little Xmas crap in Oct, why can't we?

Another thing that winds me up with Xmas are shops, including mine who play the same tired 40 songs to death. This is torture for the staff who try to zone it out, making us more tired. Then customers say "doesn't this music drive you mad?" Then I bloody hear it for the next hour.

No other time of year are so few songs played to death. Even going to a charity shop and look at a Xmas CD released 30 years ago and look at the listings of a 'new' one online. The only difference is Destiny's Child song has been replaced a certain paedo's Xmas song.

Even shoppers don't want the Xmas music. Retailers say it boosts the mood. No that theory died off many years ago.

What I don't get is the toy shop The Entertainer. CEO is a devout Christian so their shops are closed on Sundays, even the Sunday before Christmas. Yet they play Xmas music from 2nd week in Oct. As my friend went to visit The Entertainer about 11th Oct to buy something for her nephew's birthday a few days later. Heard Noddy shouting "IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!". My friend said NO ITS NOT.

My late DM frowned on putting decorations up before Christmas Eve! And they came down on January 6th.

A fine woman. I'm very much of her mind. My husband would be delighted if we didn't bothere at all, but he is the spiritual heir to Scrooge.

Mammma91 · 30/08/2024 08:49

Wow. Mine is up for 3 weeks max, even at that I’m constantly hoovering! Absolutely no chance. We’ve still got Halloween to go yet!

Oh heck no. There's absolutely no way I'm having this speculated on the thread and not shutting down that nonsense. 😆 I can categorically say I have no tree up and if MNHQ want a virtual house tour to confirm that I'm happy to oblige. 😅

Mine goes up in December along with all the other rational people. 😆

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 30/08/2024 07:47

Your DM was correct - Christmas Eve to 6th January is Christmas. We never put decorations up before about the 22nd December when I was child. I still don't put any up until mid-month. Don't understand the 'put the decs up in November, rip them down on Boxing Day' brigade, when Christmas doesn't actually start until 24th December.

Anyway. Would love to know the thinking behind the OP's neighbour's decision!

Technically though the 12 days of Christmas are 25 Dec - 5 Jan. Though after Boxing Day people start asking "did you have a nice Christmas?"🤣

WalkersAntler · 30/08/2024 08:51

Go over, ring the door bell and belt out a few Christmas carols.

We get requests for these all year round. Yet these are associated with Xmas. Though if you visit a supermarket with an area with a high proportion of Muslims, supermarkets bring these tubs in for Eid which the start date of Ramadan - which Eid follows after that starts 10-12 days earlier each year. This year Ramadan started on 10th March. Next year its 28th Feb. 2026's will start mid Feb etc.

Don't start on the shrinking tubs. Celebrations' tubs are very small. Soon the boxes will be bigger than the tubs.

Went to The Range in mid July and had Halloween crap in there already.

HouseofHolbein · 30/08/2024 08:54

Someone I know keeps her Christmas tree up all year... was very odd going round for a meeting in July and seeing it all lit up in the corner of her living room.

Nobody needs me singing. It's the last week of the holidays and it's sunny, I'm not doing that to the rest of the neighbours. 😅

"Ugh why would you put it up this early"
"I'd get so sick of it by the time christmas comes"

You do all realise this is why free will exists?
These people are happy. Their tree makes them happy. They won't get bored of it.
They're not hurting anyone.
They're not making you put your tree up.
They're not inviting you round to sing carols in front of the tree.

I don't see the problem here.

Auburngal · 30/08/2024 08:58

Some of the TV Christmas specials are filmed in May or June.

A late family friend was a runner for a few TV shows for the BBC. The audience of these were told to wear something festive, esp those shows where the camera sometimes pan on the audience.

It can't make them that happy if they were arguing about it!

UtterlyOtterly · 30/08/2024 09:03

To the pp charity shop volunteer, at least two charity shops in our town have their Christmas cards out already. They say if they keep them until later they lose sales.

TheEuropaHotel · 30/08/2024 09:04

No Christmas till after Halloween for me! I am Irish and we have always done Halloween. Never bonfire night for somewhat obvious reasons!

But I did see a section in sainsburys the other day with mince pies and little Christmas puddings! I suppose it isn't that far away.

It's still summer to me though. I'm not ready for autumn yet, let alone Christmas

dawngreen · 30/08/2024 09:04

Any of their family from a different country. But maybe some one in their family/relations is in bad health, and don't have much time. At least they are not been anti social yobs.
