To think my neighbours win a prize for being the first people to

Put up their CHRISTMAS TREE!

I heard them arguing last night when getting ready for bed and only half heartedly paid attention that it had something to do with a light being broken. We both had our windows open but the discussion was pretty loud and they only live across the road. However, at no point did I even remotely consider that they were talking about Christmas lights. I shut the curtains, went to bed and when I woke up this morning I'm met with a fully decorated Christmas tree standing full view in the front window!

So do they win some sort of prize it's still the bloody summer holidays or has someone else beaten them to it?

Some of the TV Christmas specials are filmed in May or June.

A late family friend was a runner for a few TV shows for the BBC. The audience of these were told to wear something festive, esp those shows where the camera sometimes pan on the audience.

A friend taught Nigella Lawson’s daughter Mimi years back, and apparently she was very funny about having to ‘come down the stairs on Christmas morning’, in the middle of a baking hot June day, with the sound person swearing about the sound of an icecream van coming in from outside.

Technically though the 12 days of Christmas are 25 Dec - 5 Jan. Though after Boxing Day people start asking "did you have a nice Christmas?"🤣

Absolutely this! I once asked someone, who puts her tree up in November, if she knew when the first day of Christmas is. She hesitated and then said cautiously… “15 December?”. Completely flummoxed when I told her it’s Christmas Day. Then it’s all over these days with trees coming down on Boxing Day

I don't think they are from the Philippines but I am curious about the logic of a country spending 1/3 of the year in preparation for just one day. What's the rational behind it??

It’s true- from September on it’s the build up to Christmas in Filipino culture. Perhaps they have a visitor coming or relative and want to be hospitable. I think it’s lovely for those who enjoy it, but for myself the beginning of December is time enough. When I was a child we never started Christmas until 2 weeks before the big day.

sweetpickle2 · 30/08/2024 09:10

I'd love it if a neighbour did this, it would make me smile.

Being annoyed by it is weird, it doesn't impact you.

Misthios · 30/08/2024 09:10

I was an extra on a Christmas movie, fake snow and everything (it's made from sort of biodegradable paper flakes). But we filmed in February, and it was at least fairly chilly.

People bang on about american-ism this and that but this is one place they have it spot on as their shops don't start pushing all the christmas tat until after thanksgiving which is last week in November. This is why I hate christmas so much, it has morphed into this massive consumerist tat fest which starts in september and lasts for 4 months. And yes, the same old music we've been hearing for 50 years. Urgh.

Would you not get fed up looking at Xmas decorations for the best part of 4 months. Mine go up on the 8th Dec for a month and I'm ready to tear them down before Christmas day.

My first thought was “ how do you dust aChristmas tree”. I am a sad person. ☹️

Misthios · 30/08/2024 09:13

And I really couldn't give a shit whether someone considers "Christmas" to be 24 dec - 6th jan, or 1-25 december.

What's not under debate is that 30th August is not Christmas. And neither is September, October, or November.

Who said I was annoyed? I'm more baffled if I'm honest.

"I really hope they don't keep it up for 4 months." "I feel like I'll be fed up seeing it by December"- because you're... baffled? Okay.

FatmanandKnobbin · 30/08/2024 09:17

I put a tree up in April every year for an event in May and it comes down in June. It cheers the place up no end. I would have a tree up all year round tbh.

Yes I'm baffled as to why they've put it up hence the thread but there's nothing wrong with my statement. I think most people would be fed up of seeing it if it stays up from now until Christmas. Hmm

I used to work with a woman who loved Christmas so much she used to have a Christmas party with tree, lights, Christmas dinner and The Wizard of Oz on the TV each summer. She invited a few other Christmas fans from the office and it became quite a thing, with some of them holding their own summer Christmases too. Maybe one of them has moved to your street. They were, all of them, barking but harmless. I'd go over, ask if they have a spare mince pie and find out what's occurring.

I volunteer in a charity shop and there was lots of chat on the WhatsApp group last night about how we are getting a Christmas card delivery on Monday and how ridiculously early that is, and how we're not putting them out until November.

I always think there must be something lacking in people's lives if they can't just enjoy September/October/November for what they are instead of squealing and squeaking about Christmas for a third of the year.

November isn’t much fun after Bonfire Night, so I don’t see what’s wrong with starting Christmas prep then. Plus of course it’s a well known fact that once we’re into October, time whizzes past at twice the normal speed, so if you’re a late starter, before you know what it’s 15th December and you’ve done sod all.

Why, if it's not annoying you?

Genuinely, how does looking at a Christmas tree for any period of time impact you in an way? They're not making you put one up in your living room.

WarriorN · 30/08/2024 09:19

Oh ffs

Sunshone · 30/08/2024 09:22

The first one in our road went up a couple of weeks ago 😂

It's just a light-hearted thread it's really not meant to be that deep.

I know someone who has family visit from overseas once a year in the summer and they always have 'Christmas Day' . The test will be whether the tree comes down or stays up until December!

Davros · 30/08/2024 09:26

The Liberty Christmas shop opened last week. I did get excited for a few minutes

BlunderMifflin · 30/08/2024 09:29

One of our neighbours put flashing coloured fairy lights outside her house in July. I'm sure she just wants it to look pretty but I feel like it doesn't make it special at Christmas if they've been up for months already. Just my opinion, I'm sure it makes her happy.

LunaNorth · 30/08/2024 09:32

I’d have to restrain myself from putting their windows in.

(Joking. Kind of.).

I wonder if you live 2 doors down from me, other side of Noknickers ?

With the garden full of gnomes, assorted off-cuts of artificial grass, yappy dog & fairy lights on all night every night

StMarieforme · 30/08/2024 09:36

I love Christmas, but also I love Sept- Nov. Cosy nights, Whitby Goth, Halloween, Bonfire Night... we do all of these and love them. THEN it's Christmas planning!

LookItsMeAgain · 30/08/2024 09:41

I think I've cracked it!

I think I know why they have done this...

They are telling all of the children of the neighbourhood NOT to knock on their door for Hallowe'en looking for sweets and stuff, because they've already moved on to Christmas.

That's it, isn't it????
