Was I being unkind? Women filming themselves in their pants

LivingInStrangeTimes · 27/08/2024 20:16

I was scrolling through tiktok and came across a video of a woman showing a jumpsuit outfit which she is reccomending people buy.

The strange part to me is that the video begins with her standing there in tiny knickers and a bra then she gets dressed into the jumpsuit.

I perhaps shouldn't have said anything at all but left the following comment

"You look lovely. I'm not being unkind but why has it become so normalised to upload videos of ourselves in our underwear? You don't have to expose yourself like that to show the garment x"

Cue a pile on and her getting pissed off because apparently I'm only saying it because of her body type - which had absolutely nothing to do with it for me. We actually look quite similar in the buff!

I'm seeing more and more of these videos and it has become the new normal and done thing on social media for people who want to show clothes, to stand their in their pants beforehand and have you watch them get dressed.

Was I being unreasonable to say what I said and am I unreasonable for thinking its fucking weird and unnecessary?

"I want to show you this dress, but first here's my knickers!"

Edited to add - I mention women specifically because I'm not seeing any of these videos from men.. and nor do I want to 😐

Yeah I agree with you. It’s attention seeking that’s all and it makes me cringe!

Pipecleanerrevival · 27/08/2024 20:29

Yabu for being on tiktok in the first place.

There are kids on the app. Should 13yo boys be watching 35-40yo women getting dressed?

No, their parents should be putting controls on / checking what they’re watching

This content isn't age restricted. It's on the FYP.

For god's sake don't look at any Dove skincare ads. Or the lingerie sections of any clothing retailers. Or the beachwear sections. Or people on beaches, or at swimming pools. In fact, it might be best if you don't look at any media that might contain images of humans. Limit yourself to looking at people outdoors in a cool climate, you'll feel much happier.

Those things aren't remotely comparable.

Then don’t let your kids on TikTok if you’re bothered 🤷‍♀️

Why is “it’s none of your business” such a standard answer ?

The TikTok poster uploads video of her herself in her bra and knickers. It is the equivalent of walking through town in your bra and knickers.

As such, it is our business.

if I click to see a jump suit I have not agreed to look at underwear.

I know, it's such a ridiculous response.
Someone posting on a public forum is doing it purely to make sure others see it. That's basically the point. Those people are going to have an opinion either way. If they want things to be 'none of your business' then don't bother posting publicly FFS.

Pantaloons99 · 27/08/2024 20:32

@Pipecleanerrevival 🤣 love that.

I've been going on tiktok lately. It's blown my mind. I have a son with a mobile phone. I need to research. I nearly lost my mind seeing videos that trend on Snapchat. I'm sick of it myself.

I agree with you OP. But no I e is hearing you. It's gone too far. Even older women/ mum's in their later years want the attention. And yes I agree this video isn't to be compared to walking down the beach in a bikini.

That answer is INFURIATING.

All parents try.

All social media companies spend hundreds of millions making sure they fail.

We need to take back the streets - in our modern world the streets include social media.

No e if it is stacked to help create a good society.

Fromage · 27/08/2024 20:32

To be clear....

Woman posts what she wants on TikTok.
You post 'YABU for showing us your body in your vest and pants'
Others post 'YABU for saying that'

You are upset others have posted their opinion on what you chose to post on TikTok.

That it?

Garlicfest · 27/08/2024 20:33

LivingInStrangeTimes · 27/08/2024 20:31

Those things aren't remotely comparable.

Really? How? Could you please enumerate the reasons why a woman shouldn't be seen in her undies while putting more clothes on, but it's okay if she stays in her bra and pants?
Thanks.

Werweisswohin · 27/08/2024 20:33

They just want comments tbh, even if they're not all great. I don't enjoy seeing randoms in their pants either so I just scroll on by.

queenofthewild · 27/08/2024 20:36

I was at Reading Festival this weekend. Used to go every year before DC, but haven't been in 13 years. I swear I was the only woman there with my arse covered.

Girls tripping round in tiny skirts, cut off shorts that show off both cheeks, gstring bikinis.

It wasn't even warm. I'm too old for that nonsense, but perhaps slightly jealous they had the thighs and confidence for it.

But there is nothing wrong with a woman “showing herself” in bra and pants, if she chooses to do that. It doesn’t sound as though she’s doing an OnlyFans style video.

If parents have a problem with their children seeing that, then it is up to them to make sure the kids don’t see anything the parents don’t want them to. Unless it’s a specific child-centred space, you can’t expect the world to be PG.

sugarbyebye · 27/08/2024 20:20

It's just attention seeking. This is the internet now.

This. I agree with you op. Why the need to show your underwear first. Just show the outfit

Pantaloons99 · 27/08/2024 20:37

@Garlicfest just on your point. I'd need to see this video to make a firm statement/ position.

Most of us, probably all of us can determine the intent of another woman's vid. Seeing a woman walk down beach in a bikini with a fab body does not have the same intent as bringing an outfit more sexualised into your living room and space, often against your will! Emg, I stick on YouTube and have to see crap like this I don't want to see. I just want to enjoy YouTube

If in this video, said lady has gigantic skiddy undies up past naval and a bra with holes that covers every single thing and she bends over and farts as she puts the clothes on - I'd feel different about the intent and less bothered 🤣.

Winrus · 27/08/2024 20:38

But it is none of your business what that woman chooses to upload as long as it’s not breaking any rules / laws so yabu. If you don’t like what you see, move on.

Apollo365 · 27/08/2024 20:38

I watched something on insta earlier - a couple on their page (suggestions for me) frolicking on their sofa. Her wearing nothing but a thong. It was a bit much, even for me and I feel a bit meh but it all these days 🤣

pasturesgreen · 27/08/2024 20:38

It's very, very unusual that anything good comes from commenting a TikTok video. I'd have left well alone.

Edenmum2 · 27/08/2024 20:38

I mean....don't comment on TikTok videos. Your world will be a better place

yesmen · 27/08/2024 20:39

The wide eyed people accusing you of pearl clutching remind me of my ex friend.

She used to walk around my flat in front of dh and me, clad only in a thong. When challenged she claimed with wide eyes that it is all she wears on a beech so it was fine!

A modern progressive person or a total boundary pusher?

By frolicking I mean simulating sex btw, sorry might be a regional word

Owning people did not break the law at one point.

Raping your wife did not break the law at one point.

There are many more examples.

The law often needs a reset for the good of society.

Pantaloons99 · 27/08/2024 20:42

I'm with you @yesmen . Your example is a good one. This crap is being THRUST upon us at a terrifying rate.

I have a son. He has a phone ( young teen). We have no social media apps because they are hideous bombarding non stop with half dressed ladies. Then you have to try manage the friends who have free access who are bombarded and showing them. It's getting ridiculous and many of us are sick of it.

OP, you probably hoped you might make a difference. No good ever comes of it. Gone too far. But I totally understand why you wanted to comment.

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 27/08/2024 20:44

That's fairly standard on accounts where people show their outfits.

It's not sexual.

You probably came off pretty weird tbh.

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 27/08/2024 20:45

Do you honestly think 13 year old boys are wanking over women in their 40s pulling on a pair of jeans over their sensible pants?!

Get a grip 😁
