For hating the new bottle tops

What is going on?
Why were we not told that from now on we will never drink from a bottle without the half-cocked still-attached top spraying water/ milk/ juice all over our fronts?

LOL I have noticed this! On mineral water bottles AND orange juice ones too.

I just snap them off. I HATE this. Makes it so awkward to drink from them!

What numpty thought of THIS?! The same tit who decided to change the Carte Noir/L'or coffee jars, from normal easy open jars with normal lids, to stupid jars with sweet-jar type lids that are almost impossible to open?!!!

Yes! Those coffee jar lids. I don’t even drink it but we have them at work. What an absolute pain 😂

Yet you seemingly didn’t know what you were doing when you repeatedly ignored what you believed to be a disabled person wrote, while suggesting both you and others would know better than the person experiencing the problem.

No, you knew what you were doing and it was very transparent. You also didn’t acknowledge parts of my responses but I didn’t try to use ‘learning difficulties’ as an insult against you. I have tried to help but you’ve been very insulting and I’m out.

Secretslimmer · 26/08/2024 10:28

Sirzy · 25/08/2024 21:56

Because they are harder to get back on the bottle they aren’t as easy to use which makes it harder for those with issues impacting dexterity

Yes my elderly parents can’t manage them at all. I was out for drinks with them and a load of older relatives and scenes of confusion all round. I guess they don’t test them on the over 80s or indeed on those who aren’t that dexterous for any reason

I acknowledged all of your responses and explained what wouldn’t be possible, you chose to ignore the content of my responses. A learning difficulty isn’t a bad thing, therefore unless you think it is a bad thing it can’t be an insult.

Ignoring a persons responses isn’t helping them at all, its just showing you think you know best.

Mumwithapub · 26/08/2024 10:31

Mum to an ASD 6 yr old who won't drink from them at all. It's different so it's not right in her mind.

I’m baffled. There was even a programme on BBC about this hatred of the new bottle tops. What age are these people who struggle and hate them? They’re just new. Humans can adapt to them very quickly, they are simple and just need common sense. One step forward for recycling and the seas. Come on people you can do this!

“just need common sense “

and hands that aren’t riddled with arthritis!

the patronising comments towards disabled people on this thread are maddening 😡

BurnerName1 · 26/08/2024 10:34

NeverDropYourMooncup · 25/08/2024 22:22

I hate them because with the change, they are all much shallower and you have to apply greater force (and grip) on a far smaller area, which is utterly shit if you've got any form of arthritis affecting your hands or wrists. I wasn't impressed having a random 12 year old seeing me struggle and say 'I'll do that for you, Miss - my Dad and Nan can't do them either'.

Guess nobody's bothered about anyone disabled being able to access water or a sugary drink to treat a hypo.

Yes they really are much harder to open and I think you're right, it's because the bottle cap is much more shallow. I have neurological disease and I really struggle with them now,

No, you didn’t acknowledge all the content of my responses. Just like you, I’m not obliged to acknowledge every single point you write. And don’t try and flip this onto me. I’m offended that you used ‘learning difficulties’ as an insult, not that it was directed towards me. Nice try though. You’re not fooling anyone, it’s clear what you were trying to do.

longdistanceclaraclara · 25/08/2024 21:32

Hate them. Snap them off they leak. Don't snap them off poke you in the nose.

They don't poke you on the nose if you put the lid to the side of your mouth and use our index finger to keep the lid pressed down.

SauviGone · 25/08/2024 21:34

My hatred for these is on a par with paper straws.

Same. Drives me insane

SauviGone · 25/08/2024 21:34

My hatred for these is on a par with paper straws.

Me to! I will also add the awful cardboard knife and fork I got in McDonalds when I was in holiday and ordered the pancakes and syrup breakfast meal, it was comical at first trying to saw through them and then it just got really annoying!

Jellybeansweets · 26/08/2024 10:49

I recently came back to the UK after being in NZ for years and years, and assumed every bottled drink with those lids were faulty! Only after a few days did I realise they weren’t. Interesting as where I am in NZ you can’t recycle the lids, they have to be binned. In fact, if you put bottle caps in the recycling bin they can refuse to take your whole bin! (They do visual inspections now and again where they will quite literally pour out the whole recycling bin on the footpath, and go through it. I’ve known many people to not have their recycling emptied because of not following the rules)

It’s great the caps can be recycled in the UK though!

BettyBardMacDonald · 26/08/2024 10:49

A little inconvenience to help the planet isn't a big ask.

SaintHonoria · 26/08/2024 10:54

I remove the lids by pulling or snipping off. It's a stupid idea to attach the lid.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 26/08/2024 11:07

Gall10 · 26/08/2024 10:19

If everyone put the tops in a recycling bin then these tops wouldn’t exist….but people don’t put them in bins, they end up in oceans & on beaches.
But aren't you great recycling yours!
I didn’t vote for the shit that’s brexit but I have to put up with it.

WTF has Brexit got to do with it? Confused

ANOTHER ONE who doesn't get that some people find them difficult to use. Some people have disabilities and conditions that mean they really struggle with them. Have some compassion and understanding FGS! Hmm

Mrsdyna · 26/08/2024 11:10

Very annoying but just snap them off

cardibach · 26/08/2024 11:35

LongLiveTheLego · 26/08/2024 10:00

You are despite having being told missing the fact that some people have disabilities or other issues with their hands. Why can't you understand that , to quote your own words to understand not everyone has full use of their hands "is really not difficult ".

Not everyone saying this has disabilities. As I’m sure you are aware.

Sirzy · 26/08/2024 11:37

cardibach · 26/08/2024 11:35

But even if they don’t it still doesn’t mean they don’t have a right to dislike the change and how it makes it harder for them.

just because you don’t mind it doesn’t mean everyone has to agree!

KrisAkabusi · 26/08/2024 12:02

Sirzy · 26/08/2024 10:02

Does anyone really believe that screw caps on the bottle are the answer to fixing the issues with the environment? It’s not even the tip of the tip of the iceberg but it’s another thing that makes life harder for those with disabilities without having any real impact on anything.

It does though.

cyprus-mail.com/2023/04/17/bottle-caps-make-up-most-of-the-beach-rubbish-eu-sponsored-study-shows/

"Eighty-six per cent of the garbage is plastic, with plastic bottle caps making up the majority of that litter, Loizidou said."

Discarded bottle tops are clearly an issues in some places, beaches in particular, so it does make an impact.

Pinkywoo · 26/08/2024 13:48

I recently poured half a bottle of very cold water into my lap on a plane because of these bloody lids! I was trying to fill up DS's water bottle with one of those ridiculously flimsy bottles they sell on the plane, so only had one hand for each bottle. Every time I tried to pour, the lid and plastic ring bit would spin round and send water everywhere!

Hucklemuckle · 26/08/2024 15:22

Who can use the small plastic screw top bottles but can't use these ones?

hopsalong · 26/08/2024 19:48

A small thimble to protect the nose?! Carry a pair of scissors around to free the lid from the bottle?

OP here. I'm on holiday in Greece at the moment and the sea is full of plastic bottles. More than I've ever seen before. Couldn't work out why until I saw a group of teenagers walking along and two girls chucking a bottle in. Before I think they would have thrown the lids in and then sipped the rest. Now the bottle is so unpleasant to handle that the whole thing goes in the sea, skipping recycling entirely.

I'm old enough to remember ring pulls being replaced by the current generation of cans. Didn't feel the same way about that because the new cans weren't so horrible to drink from. But appreciate from this thread that a lot of people don't agree, which is interesting.

My kids had just learned to pour their own juice in the morning from a 1.75 litre bottle, but that's now a thing of the past....

Push them right back until they click. They don’t hit you 8n the face or spray you with anything then. Plus they stay attached so you don’t accidentally drop them and find yourself unable to resell the bottle.
And yes, the reasons for them are pretty obvious. The post criticised above wasn’t really snide.

Resell?

Barney16 · 26/08/2024 19:54

Poured what felt like half a bottle of coke over myself the other day. I was like have I lost all physical coordination? Nope, stupid attached bottle top thingy. Whoever invented it is laughing lots right now.
