For hating the new bottle tops

What is going on?
Why were we not told that from now on we will never drink from a bottle without the half-cocked still-attached top spraying water/ milk/ juice all over our fronts?

Does anyone know more about how they’re processed for recycling afterwards? It’s a different type of plastic so I assumed it would need to be separated anyway. I always take the soft plastic label off so it seems strange to me to have to put the bottle in with cap attached.

I would be interested about the data on how many more bottle caps are thrown away/littered than actual bottles, but I suppose it’s quite a minor change that could make a difference.

wrongthinker · 25/08/2024 21:47

I like them! What's wrong with them? If you pull it right back it doesn't get in the way of anything.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 25/08/2024 21:47

Sewannoying · 25/08/2024 21:43

Putting the lid in the recycling bin won’t help. It needs to be attached to the bottle, otherwise it will fall through the sorting grid and go to general waste. So while they are a pain, there’s a good reason and people shouldn’t snap them off.

Oh I didn't know this. Does that really happen? If that's true, then I will make more effort to keep it on/try to get used to it.

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 21:49

I can't open the innocent smoothie ones. I think it's my hands.

RainyDaysAndMondaysNeverGetMeDown · 25/08/2024 21:49

With most of these bottles, after you open them one way, say to the left, if you pull the cap over the other way it releases extra plastic "string" and make it more usable.

I appreciate that mightn't make sense, but try it or google it.

Oh this is interesting! Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I attended a talk by my work’s recycling company and they explained that was the reason. Anything too small drops through (which includes the bottle tops if not attached).

It was also eye opening about how much gets wrongly recycled, which contaminates the recycling and means that it all has to be thrown away.

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 21:51

StSwithinsDay · 25/08/2024 21:42

Millions of them are not being recycled and end up dumped, often in the sea. I think it's a small price to pay for any reduction in environmental damage and threats to sea creatures.

Fine. But they aren't very accessible so are those of us who already struggle with bottles just meant to lump it?

These blimmin new lids. I understand the environmental impact but I can't open the innocent smoothie ones. Are they all the same?

@violetsparkle
What are not very accessible?

Because they are harder to get back on the bottle they aren’t as easy to use which makes it harder for those with issues impacting dexterity

ScottishScouser · 25/08/2024 21:56

cardibach · 25/08/2024 21:35

Yes they do. You just have to line them up properly and check.

But the previous bottle tops did not have this annoying feature.

Changing the design because some people are too lazy and stupid to recycle the tops just penalises the rest of us.

TinySaltLick · 25/08/2024 22:00

Find it hard to get worked up about these, if people were better at recycling the lids it wouldn't be necessary - but they aren't, so they are

Just fold it over or wear a small thimble to protect the nose

TheLizardQueen · 25/08/2024 22:00

SauviGone · 25/08/2024 21:34

My hatred for these is on a par with paper straws.

Same here!! And I can never get the tops screwed back on properly!

ttcat37 · 25/08/2024 22:01

I’m not sure what the fuss is. You just open the lid and kind of pop it back and it stays there. You drink like normal. I have never had an issue and I can’t imagine how it could be an issue

HOW DO YOU OPEN THE LID?

FOJN · 25/08/2024 22:07

Everyday is a school day. I only buy sparkling mineral water occasionally and had noticed the bottle tops were a bit more awkward recently so I've been cutting them off with a pair of scissors! I've always put the cap back on the bottle before throwing it in the recycling though.

Okokokokokish · 25/08/2024 22:08

I genuinely thought it was me being dyspraxic! PITA trying to treat myself to an occasional rum and coke…I end up throwing the Coke away because it is flat after one day ! Not great for the environment TBH .

cardibach · 25/08/2024 22:10

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 22:03

HOW DO YOU OPEN THE LID?

Screw it open like you always have, then push the attached lid back until it clicks out of the way. It’s really not difficult.

Abigaillovesholidays · 25/08/2024 22:10

They are so annoying! They don't do up properly once opened. Have spilled so money drinks because of this! Awful design.

Why is it flat? Aren’t you putting the lid back properly? It’s not difficult. Just check it’s on straight.

I have the same problem with the Naked smoothies if I ever get a meal deal. If DH isn't about, I have to run a knife round the bits sealing the plastic top together so I can actually open it 🤦‍♀️

cardibach · 25/08/2024 22:12

I’m not getting the ‘don’t screw back on’ comments from so many. Have ihad to redo the fastening a few times because it hasn’t quite gone straight? Yes. Is it obvious that this has happened? Also yes, with a quick glance. Did I sometimes fail to screw on old school tops in the same way? Yes again.

Did you miss the part where she said she is dyspraxic therefore these things aren’t as easy as you would like to make out

I wonder whether people also got so upset when canned beverages switched from pull-off tops to stay-on tops for the same reason...

What an excellent point! I had forgotten all about this!
