For hating the new bottle tops

What is going on?
Why were we not told that from now on we will never drink from a bottle without the half-cocked still-attached top spraying water/ milk/ juice all over our fronts?

aside

Does anyone else share my hate for the tern "beverages". When did it become so common/take off as a term?? I don't
"offer someone a beverage" I offer a drink.

Beverage beverage beverage... Shudder.

I don't think I ever say that, or know anyone who does. It is jarring though! 😖

Nat6999 · 25/08/2024 23:26

Snap one of the two tags off, it makes it easier to put the top back on tight.

Litlgreyrabbit · 25/08/2024 23:37

can I have a photo please as I have absolutely no idea what lids you are all talking about?

DBSFstupid · 26/08/2024 00:17

loropianalover · 25/08/2024 21:34

They’re hard to twist close again. I had a bottle of 7UP while I was sick recently, I had twisted it but it must have not tightened, and spilled all over the bed. V annoying.

Same ... thought i had closed the lid. It leaked all over my laptop. Pissed off isnt the word for it!!
Some dickhead would have got a big fat bonus for designing these.

There's 'hatred on them' because they're annoying and confusing and difficult for some people. And my age is mid 50s ... What's your point?! I find them difficult to open and difficult to put the lid back on, and it's awkward to drink out of. I have quite painful joints in my hands/fingers, and am finding them a bit of a faff and a fiddle, and jarring for my joints.

Lots of people have got disabilities and conditions and things like dyspraxia and are struggling with them. It's really patronising, rather ableist, and quite rude to say 'what age of these people who are complaining?' Like suggesting they're a toddler or something!

Yes, I do think it's really good that they're trying to help the environment. and I do hope people get used to them, but they really, really need to make the lids easier to open and close, the strip holding the lid on needs to be longer, and it all needs to be more user friendly. So many people complaining cannot be wrong, so I don't think this patronising, snide, offensive attitude is helping anyone.

Whole segment on Radio 4 the other day. I'm not a buyer of drinks in plastic bottles so have yet to come across an attached one, but apparently once opened. you push the lid as far as you can and it 'clicks' so it stays away from your face.

ttcat37 · 25/08/2024 22:01

I’m not sure what the fuss is. You just open the lid and kind of pop it back and it stays there. You drink like normal. I have never had an issue and I can’t imagine how it could be an issue

Ah, yes, because people with certain disabilities either don’t need to drink in your world, or simply don’t exist.

Simonjt · 26/08/2024 06:10

Twicedaily · 25/08/2024 22:44

I’m baffled. There was even a programme on BBC about this hatred of the new bottle tops. What age are these people who struggle and hate them? They’re just new. Humans can adapt to them very quickly, they are simple and just need common sense. One step forward for recycling and the seas. Come on people you can do this!

Care to explain how someone with arthrogryposis can easily open and close these bottles? Can common sense now cure disabilities?

MultiplaLight · 26/08/2024 06:18

Those of you reusing plastic bottles, just buy an actual reusable water bottle. Don't get your attitude about that.

longlocks · 26/08/2024 06:30

Just snap cap off. The only time I probably leave the cap attached is on the plane as lost the cap before and Jet 2’s cup holders don’t hold bottles. Which was awkward.

Willoo · 26/08/2024 06:31

I hate it as well. I can never get it out back on properly. Now I immediately pull the cap off. Much better

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/08/2024 06:34

Am I in the only council area that says you cant recycle the lids so they must be removed?

Vettrianofan · 26/08/2024 07:13

Silly me 🙈 genuinely thought Lidl lemonade bottles had a manufacturing fault with their bottles all summer...now I know why! Thanks OP for starting this thread.

violetsparkle · 26/08/2024 07:55

What I find disappointing is the lack of thought how this would affect those of us who may ALREADY struggle with opening bottles.

violetsparkle · 26/08/2024 07:57

ttcat37 · 25/08/2024 22:43

I haven’t tried one of those sorry- I meant the generic bottle of pop/ water like you get with a meal deal

I'll see if I can manage one of them thank you

Simonjt · 26/08/2024 06:03

Ah, yes, because people with certain disabilities either don’t need to drink in your world, or simply don’t exist.

They’re no different to the old bottle tops though except the lid is attached?

And? We're telling you we struggle with them.

They’re completely different, they’re a third shallower, the mechanism to open them is completely different, the mechanism to drink from is completely different, the mechanism to close them is completely different. They’re too shallow to be used with a disability aid, they can’t be used by those with only one functioning arm/hand, they’re aren’t any devices that can keep them held open allowing you to drink from them, and there aren’t any devices available that can place the lid back on securely and then tighten it.

AnchorWHAT · 26/08/2024 08:33

I don't have a problem with them except the big lumpy bit on the side hurts my delicate hand when i try unscrewing it and sometimes i struggle getting it lined up right to screw back on, i test by squeezing the bottle a bit and if its solid i know its worked if it squeezes a bit of air out i know its not lined up so redo it. I was thrilled the day i discovered the bend lid back to snap in place though.

gannett · 26/08/2024 08:41

They are very irritating. They also make me retroactively irritated with all the idiots who weren't recycling the lids with the bottles in the first place and whose fault it is that we've been landed with inferior products.

(If you don't screw the lid back on when you put the bottle in the recycling, wouldn't the dregs of the drink make your bag/box/bin all sticky and unpleasant?)

tamade · 26/08/2024 08:43

BrutusMcDogface · 25/08/2024 22:12

What an excellent point! I had forgotten all about this!

This it is a false comparison, probably the best example I have read for a while.

The new cans were far easier to operate when they were introduced, the lever action is more efficient and comfortable. I go to countries which still use ring pulls and am always surprised how much harder they can be. So that example was a win win for both consumer and environment.

These days it seems like no-one cares if the consumer loses out. All means are justified by the end

jen337 · 26/08/2024 08:44

This is what’s known as ‘innovation’ in capitalist systems, now the lids get recycled with the bottles, yes thanks so much really saving the planet there, all those bottle tops were the things really destroying the environment. Makes virtually zero impact to the problem of plastic waste, a prime example of tokenistic greenwashing. We can all continue guzzling Fanta with a clear conscience, corporate pats on the back and dividends all round.

My hatred for these is on a par with paper straws.

Paper straws are another level of stupid. Lots of glue dissolved in my drink, no thanks
