This is awful, my thoughts are with the French and worldwide Jewish community.

@Sassy31 That is terrible. But Christians are not routinely attacked. You do not need massive security around Christian schools in the UK. It really si not comparable.

PurpleChrayn · 25/08/2024 19:08

It's terrifying.

I'm in the UK, and am afraid every Shabbat when I go to synagogue with my children. We're in a provincial northern city, and the synagogue regularly receives threatening phone calls. CCTV caught some guys lurking around last week.

It’s not comparable - however it’s the same sorts carrying out these attacks sadly . A lot of churches have been attacked in recent years and priests and nuns throughout European which is not being reported Which is completely unacceptable.
There should be zero tolerance Aggainst any who commit these awful crimes aggainst any religious establishments

Globally Christians are the most persecuted religious group.

But in the UK it’s Jews who are most often victims of such attacks. Yet this doesn’t seem to get that much media attention.

Below is a link to an article about attacks on churches in France in recent years.

I’m so sorry that this is happening.

This is exactly what I’m talking about, Jewish people seem to live under this cloud of threat. Security at places of worship, schools ffs why should any school have to get security!?

If any other group of people had to get security for their place of worship there would be a big fuss.

pigletinthewoods · 25/08/2024 19:22

I’m so sorry @PurpleChrayn 😢

Is there any chance of organising a self-defence group in the community? I’m not Jewish but would volunteer to keep an eye on the local synagogue and the people attending if I was asked to. I bet many other people would too.

Jewish people have been the most persecuted group and it hurts so much to see antisemitism on the rise again. Like we have learnt nothing.

I wish you and your family all the strength and peace.

The absolute cheek of this guy though

Left-wing politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon called it an "intolerable crime"

Mélenchon is the French version of Jeremy Corbyn.

Sassy31 · 25/08/2024 19:02

No, two church in North London and the priest was in bed whilst the church was set on fire . Will try and find the link.
Last week a priest was stabbed in Southern Ireland . This was classed as a Terrorist attack- due to what the suspect shouted out . So it’s all happening .

Where? 'Southern Ireland' is not a country.

i agree
Places of worship, regardless of religion, should be sacrosanct

I agree. However I also think that nobody should be killing anyone else, whatever their religious or other beliefs and sadly, it is an all too common occurrence, and has been going on a very long time.

EasternStandard · 25/08/2024 19:27

Yanbu

This is not being dealt with well by politicians and we are seeing volatility in western countries

I'm sorry for those who feel unsafe

I just wanted to say hanks for your support. It's very sweet and much appreciated.

Our (Jewish state primary) school has added extra paid guards in recent months as well as a handful of parent volunteers to stand guard on the route to school during drop off and pick up times to make sure the kids are safe and to report any dodgy-looking people to the real guards. We also have multiple bomb sweeps at school a day. With two kids at school we now pay over £3000 a year for security. Again, this is a state school so should be free but needs must.

Believeitornot · 25/08/2024 19:34

YANBU, surely that is the obvious answer. And anyone who says otherwise, needs their head examined.

I would also hope that people don’t end up thinking everyone who supports the Palestinian cause automatically hates Jewish people (which is invariably what I think a lot of people think and then we end up in an even worse place). Terrible terror incidents like this help no one and do not help any cause.

Agree with this.

Although my opinion is that the conflict in the ME is about land and who has the right to it.

"Places of worship, regardless of religion, should be sacrosanct"

No more so than shops, concerts or railway stations. Or houses.

I was pondering today how we don’t see militant Jews attacking Muslims or mosques or schools in Europe.

Yes

The Jewish people have always tried to fit in and keep their heads down in the Uk

Sorry the Republic of Ireland - as Northern Ireland is part of the Uk
so it is commonly referred to as southern Ireland by the Irish people of the south .

californiaisdreaming · 25/08/2024 19:44

Incredibly sad.

It's really obvious which schools are Jewish. Any school that has security guards, large concrete walls all around it - it's a Jewish school.

They're the only schools that need this level of security from terrorist attacks.

TonTonMacoute · 25/08/2024 19:45

Absolutely appalling, but no longer surprising unfortunately.

Violence by extreme Islamists in France has been getting worse for some years, against Christians as well as Jews.

During the Second World War Algerian Muslims in France helped shelter Jews from the holocaust, now we are here.

The fact that some people on Mumsnet are okay with synagogues being bombed is a depressing sign of the times.

ASongOfRiceAndPeas · 25/08/2024 19:50

It’s absolutely awful what happened. Please let’s not equate ‘pro Palestinian’ with antisemitic, the vast vast majority of people who support Palestinian freedom do not think that way. It hurts to see that people might think I hate Jews just because I disagree with Israel’s actions.

MumsTheWordFact · 25/08/2024 19:57

Most people who are "pro Palestine" want to see that area and Israel merged together into one state. The result of that would be absolutely murderous so it is understandable why people equate Pro-Palestinian when anti-semitic.

Absolutely. Many, many Jews disagree with the actions of the Israeli government too.

When incidents like this happen, however, it does reinforce the need for Jewish people to have somewhere they feel safe.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 25/08/2024 19:58

It's sad that Synagogues have needed security for years and years, I remember back in the 80's that a synagogue in / around Hampstead Garden Suburb had their men on duty.

I saw a couple of months ago that a Synagogue off the Finchley Road had security, at the entrance to the road and at the building itself.

It's not right that British people do not feel safe at their places of worship.

I am 100% sure that the Church of Scotland where I grew up does not have security before / during / after their weekly services.

Nope, as an Irish person 'of the South' neither I, nor anyone I've ever met, including my rather large extended family, has ever referred to Ireland as 'Southern Ireland'. If that's what you call our country, go for it. But don't tell me what 'people of the South' call it, as you clearly haven't a clue.

And yes, I'm well aware that Northern Ireland (an actual country) is part of the UK. But go raibh maith agat for the education.

I agree. Hamas don’t want to co-exist peacefully. They want to erase all Jews, not only Israeli ones. Given that, a one state solution is never going to be accepted by Netanyahu. That’s understandable. It feels pretty personal to all Jews and it is more than land.

Ah for goodness sake, stop being an eejit and leave her alone. She meant Ireland as opposed to Northern Ireland, that's plain to see. (I'm a person of the South myself)
