Dh went to the toilet whilst Dd was in the paddling pool

I didn’t feel well the other day so went upstairs for a lie down when Dh got back from
work. Dd was asking to go in the pool-large blow up one, deep enough for me to sit in and move around, deep enough for Dd to swim. I said I wasn’t feeling well and was going to go for a lie down when daddy was back and she could go in then with him (he sometimes goes in or with him sat outside watching obviously)
I went upstairs, heard her in the pool chatting away to Dh. After a bit I realised I couldn’t hear her (she’s very chatty) but didn’t think much of it, a while later I heard her calling to Dh and him calling back from the downstairs loo.
Dh had gone to the toilet and left her, when he went to the toilet it wasn’t for a quick wee, but number two and for those he can be in there for up to an hour, no joke.
Aibu to think this is completely irresponsible to leave her in the pool unattended?

Same as an adult who slips, bangs their head, ends up unconscious and drowns.

You do know you can drown in a puddle if you’re facing down and breath in water don’t you? It’s not unheard of.

Yes, but when do you stop supervising your child every minute in the bath/ paddling pool in case something like that happens? We'd all obviously.habe a different answer wouldn't we?

Swimming pools don't allow unaccompanied under 8s.

A non-swimming 6yo shouldn't be left in that deep pool.

Franjipanl8r · 24/08/2024 23:10

There was no need for her to be in the pool alone, it wasn’t a risk that needed to be taken. I’d be furious.

No, I misread your post, but thanks for being extremely rude for no reason.

I'm on a parallel chat about a 6 year old left in a paddling pool, as was stated by the op in her opening post.

I haven't commented on her oh's decision since she posted a pic of what is clearly not a paddling pool!

ZippyDenimBear · 24/08/2024 23:15

I wasn't with any of mine for every second of their baths at 6. But a swimming pool, yes obviously I would be.

It’s a large, deep inflatable pool, when she stands up it’s up to just below her shoulders
Its unlikely anything would happen, but I still never leave her

In that depth of water, no.
I tend to be cautious and think a child could slip, hurt themself so I’d not leave a child alone in water.
And if he could have been gone for up to an hour ( an hour???) he should have taken her indoors.

InevitableNameChanger · 24/08/2024 23:19

I agree with you, but I find a lot of people are incredibly ignorant about water safety.

CellophaneFlower · 24/08/2024 23:21

I don't think he should have left her whilst he was out of earshot and otherwise distracted, but I'm interested there's been a few posts about her banging her head. In an inflatable pool in that depth of water, I'm not actually sure that's possible 🤷‍♀️

I'm sorry, I was a bit rude, I didn't realise you'd misunderstood my post . I'd asked for any stories of nt 6 year olds drowning in a paddling pool and you posted a story of a one year old drowning, which did seem a bit misjudged to say the least.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2024 23:25

Nip to the loo at 6 is fine I think.

This. One slip. Dead.

It's not hard to tell a 6 year old to get out for 5 mins while you have a wee

It's about risk and reward isn't it

Unless special needs what 6 year old would just lay there with their head underwater and drown and not, you know, stand up?

If they slipped on a wet plastic paddling pool base, and banged their head, they might not.

BlackShuck3 · 24/08/2024 23:34

Leaving his 6 y/o daughter alone in a pool that deep for an extended 'bathroom spa session' is neglect imo.

If they slip and they're in water up to their shoulders, they're not going to be banging their head on the bottom of the pool.

Well no, because it’s up to her shoulders, so she can’t slip and fall as she could in a paddling pool, it’s an inflatable plunge pool thing.

I’d still get her out personally, but assuming she can swim, she’d be pretty hard pressed to do herself any damage

It’s not a paddling pool, it’s a plunge pool - up to her shoulders

cadburyegg · 24/08/2024 23:40

I thought you were going to say it was a pool with 3 inches of water in. I have a 6 year old and I would definitely not leave him unattended in a pool that is up to his shoulders. YANBU

TellTaleHeart14 · 24/08/2024 23:45

Well now I understand why there is so many children drowning in the UK each year 🙄

CellophaneFlower · 24/08/2024 23:47

I think up to her shoulders might be a bit of an exaggeration anyway. Our pool is much deeper than the one shown, you need a ladder to get in/out. My son is 7 and the water comes up to his shoulders. Perhaps he's a giant 🤔

pinkyredrose · 24/08/2024 23:51

Why the fuck does he take up to an hour for a shit?

Does he need a Dr's appt or is he opting out of family life?
