Is DH thick as mince?

maftin · 24/08/2024 20:51

We are abroad on hol atm, 6th floor room.
DH took DD,4, back for a snack and play in our room at hottest part of day.
Over dinner tonight he told me he left DD playing on the balcony while he had a shower. It's a glass wall shorter than she is with a little wall she could also climb up.
He says she is very sensible, sees no issue at all, I am fucking livid he did this. AIBU?

I'm a pretty chilled parent.

But no. Fuck that. A million times over.

YANBU

CuttySarcasm · 24/08/2024 21:12

That’s so neglectful and I’m pretty laid back. Shocking actually.

legalseagull · 24/08/2024 21:12

Sod 'thick as mince', he's an absolute fucking idiot

ByCupidStunt · 24/08/2024 21:12

I'd have fucking killed him.

Calling him thick is mild in comparison.

maftin · 24/08/2024 21:14

I am 100% not making this up.
He is normally a great dad and DD adores him.
I'm fucking LIVID tho. For anyone that thinks I'm being mean saying he's thick, well I just made him read my post and all these responses so he gets a good reality check that it was NOT OK. Asides me telling him how unbelievably colossally FUCKING stupid that was obviously.
He feels awful. I have zero sympathy for him right now.

The glass wall is about an inch taller than her, I just double checked, no way is that safe tho

Mumistiredzzzz · 24/08/2024 21:15

Holy shit. What an utter moron.

ByCupidStunt · 24/08/2024 21:16

Had he been drinking? I'm just trying to work out whether he's got any excuse?

Fundays12 · 24/08/2024 21:18

Omg as a mum of 5,7 and 12 year old this absolutely terrifies me. He really is not fit to care for her.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 24/08/2024 21:18

I'm currently in a hotel with a much higher balcony railing than that and there are actually signs up saying do not let children on or near the balcony unattended.
I did think who would be so stupid that they'd need a sign but I guess now I know - OP's husband, Mr Mincehead.

Disturbia81 · 24/08/2024 21:19

Could you take a pic OP, I'm having trouble picturing it? Or diagram.
Stuff like this makes me feel sick though, the lack of awareness.. it means you will never really get a proper break as whenever she's just with him you'll worry.

No nothing, neither of us drink.
The house keepers (make and female) were doing the rounds so he was worried someone would come in while he was in shower apparently so he kept the shower door open with one eye on the door. But not DD. I just don't get it.

Cheesecakelunch · 24/08/2024 21:19

Thick and too arrogant to admit he is wrong. The worst combo.

tolerable · 24/08/2024 21:22

@violetsparkle sorry but your response is funny.
@maftin as he is genuinely hit with the realisation he was incredibly ....thick...
unless its a 24/7 incapability you gony need to count your blessings n move on.
he fucked up and got lucky.theres that

Mumandcarer80 · 24/08/2024 21:22

YANBU it was only last month an 11 year old Irish girl fell from a hotel balcony.

So the balcony is shorter than a 4 year old? Or its, a wall bit with glass top half?
But obviously shouldn't leave a 4 year old on a balcony alone.

I think its pretty clear, the wall is an easy climb height for a 4 year old, the glass barrier atop this wall is lower than the childs full height, so if she stepped up onto the wall she could topple over the glass barrier.

I don't see how you can read it any other way, no other way makes sense.

I'd not leave a 4 year old with access to ANY balcony though whilst parent was in another room, unable to hear or easily see whats going on.

Beth216 · 24/08/2024 21:24

Thick as mince doesn't even begin to cover it IMO. What would he have if she'd fallen off the balcony? Blamed her for not being sensible?

SantasRubiksCube · 24/08/2024 21:24

Wow 😲 I can think of only a few things:

  1. He's a bit of a shit dad to not consider that leaving a 4 year old on a balcony unsupervised is neglectfully risky
  2. As someone else said, he's done it so you don't think he's capable of caring for her then you'll take on all the childcare (still putting his DD at risk in the mean time)
  3. He's winding you up, but given your update it doesn't seem that is the case.
In conclusion, he's definitely thick as mince....mince that's out of date and been left in the summer sun

He is wrong, obviously but what a horrible thing to say about your husband.

Horrible but true. Don't most partners do utterly stupid things sometimes.

The kind of things that have you grinding your teeth but you keep to yourself out of sheer embarrassment (or rage).

AcrossthePond55 · 24/08/2024 21:25

Hmmm, by any chance did they leave you lounging by the pool or such? If so, possibly 'intentional incompetence' so you'll always be the one taking DD out of the heat whilst he lounges because 'he can't be trusted to look after her'. Otherwise, yes, he's thick as mince.

Funkyslippers · 24/08/2024 21:25

Did he get his parenting skills from Michael Jackson?

ohbiscuits1 · 24/08/2024 21:25

Reading that made my stomach flip! Thick as mince is being kind

maftin · 24/08/2024 21:26

@WiddlinDiddlin
Yes that, so the wall bit with a little ledge she can step up on is about 20cm and glass up to her height above that.

Leafcutterantsarecool · 24/08/2024 21:29

Imagine being that desperate for a middle of the day shower you left a preschooler unattended on a hot balcony in a foreign hotel. Surely any sane adult at least locks all the external doors, sits the kid on the bed with the TV on and has the bathroom door slightly open? Or you know, waits for the other adult to be available?!

And his concern was housekeeping walking in?!

I can well believe it though, I’ve seen some truly stupid safety decisions made by parents.
