How many bin bags-worth of clothes do you have?

I’m trying to massively declutter so we can move house.

I would love Stacey Solomon to hire a warehouse for us and do things that way but at the moment it’s just me!

I’ve realised that the big problem for everyone in the family is clothes. There are clothes EVERYWHERE

I’ve lost track of reality and I’m trying to gauge what is on the lower side of reasonable for us each to aim for.

If you put all the clothes you own (excluding coats and jackets) into bin bags how many do you think you would fill?

20

HelpMebeok · 23/08/2024 20:15

For just me or the whole family?

for just me probably 4

the whole family probably 10x that. Kids have way too much

trippily · 23/08/2024 20:15

5? Is that a lot?

Baglady44 · 23/08/2024 20:16

I was thinking per person

Loads, but I regularly take stuff to the charity shop

Solymoly · 23/08/2024 20:17

Too many

TeenToTwenties · 23/08/2024 20:18

Rather than measuring in bin bags, would it not be better to measure by hanging rail length, or even items?

Eg does anyone need more than 8 pairs of trousers, 8 dresses, 20 tops, 10 pairs of shoes?

Baglady44 · 23/08/2024 20:21

I’m sure it would, but I’m at the ‘pick everything up and sort into clear bin bags by owner’ as a first stage!

Me - 4
DH - 5
DS - 2

JumpinJellyfish · 23/08/2024 20:26

I think I probably have about 10 (eek). I have a wardrobe plus a chest of drawers and 2 under bed storage bags that I rotate by season.

Kids don’t have that much - maybe only 3 bin bags between them (they are 3 and 6). Dh no idea.

YarsidokaLoafer · 23/08/2024 20:27

I don't know, but I've just had a clear out and donated 10 full sacks of my clothes to the charity shop.

Baglady44 · 23/08/2024 20:28

I bet that felt great!

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 23/08/2024 20:29

Probably 5 that I wear and 3 that I hope I will get back into one day, but know in my heart I really should get rid of!

drunken · 23/08/2024 20:29

Me probably less than 1
Dh about 4
Eldest inc trainers about 25
Next child 2
Youngest 3

Lindjam · 23/08/2024 20:30

About 25 - 30

Kitkat1523 · 23/08/2024 20:30

Me probably 3

Werweisswohin · 23/08/2024 20:30

Less than I had because I did a good clean out recently. All of my clothes and shoes fit into a deep walk in cupboard, with a hanging rail and floor storage

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/08/2024 20:32

I would probably have 7 or 8 I reckon but I think I actually wear about 2...

We have a lot of clothes too and the problem is definitely too many of them..

Ds 2 has about 20 pairs of joggers/soft trousers for nursery. Absolutely ridiculous

Babyworriesreal · 23/08/2024 20:32

About 12? I'll be vacuum packing summer clothes shortly, and unpacking winter clobber.

Iheartmysmart · 23/08/2024 20:33

Probably one. I’ve done a huge declutter over the last few months and got rid of an awful lot of things that I either didn’t wear or didn’t like any more. I now have a very small wardrobe of decent quality clothes that work for my lifestyle.

Baglady44 · 23/08/2024 20:33

@meltedchocolateandstrawberries @trippily @HelpMebeok
I think your 4 or 5 per adult sounds like a good target.

I haven’t rounded all mine up yet but I think it must be well over 20. It’s overwhelming.

All of my clothes? Probably 30 bin bags. More. I've no idea. I have quite a lot of clothes!

DoublePeonies · 23/08/2024 20:38

Right now, I don't know. I'd guess 4?
At its absolute minimium, my entire wardrobe, including shoes and coats fitted in one suitcase and one of those big ikea bags. The kids had one (large) suitcase between them. HOWEVER we were moving from somewhere that winter meant 20C back to the UK. So none of us had more than a holidays worth of winter clothes, and I ditched all the kids school uniform. I did quite a bit of shopping when we returned!

On that basis, 2 (ie one suitcase and one ikea bag) isn't enough.

Vintagevixen · 23/08/2024 20:41

A lot less than I used to because I sold loads on Vinted. So now I'm nearly £1000 up and at least 10/15 bin bags down!

Ponoka7 · 23/08/2024 20:44

I like seasonal clothes and dressing up, even to go to local pubs, so I have around six and wouldn't want less. I store clothes in suitcases in the loft. I've got a thing for kurt geiger bags, so my bags would fill another bin bag. I do Marie Kondo when it comes to everything else.
