How many bin bags-worth of clothes do you have?

I’m trying to massively declutter so we can move house.

I would love Stacey Solomon to hire a warehouse for us and do things that way but at the moment it’s just me!

I’ve realised that the big problem for everyone in the family is clothes. There are clothes EVERYWHERE

I’ve lost track of reality and I’m trying to gauge what is on the lower side of reasonable for us each to aim for.

If you put all the clothes you own (excluding coats and jackets) into bin bags how many do you think you would fill?

Probably 3 max. I wear Uniform all week and lounge wear at home. I then have a capsule wardrobe that I mix up. I barely spend £500 a year on clothes.

8 is a clear out. Probably 40-50 ? I have waaaay to many clothes and shoes (although is that even possible to have to many shoes ? 😂) Photo of some overflow

There is another thread about capsule wardrobes and I’m not a capsule wardrobe type of person.
I have sold and donated a lot of clothes since moving to a much smaller house.
I sent several pairs of high heels to the charity shop, but I have bought 3 new pairs of heels this summer alone.
I try not to buy stuff but love dresses. I’d say I’ve bought 5 dresses this summer.
As a compromise I bought a 2 bags at Christmas and haven’t bought any others since. One I use for work everyday. The other is my going out bag and I use that all the time.

Just for me, 5 maybe.

I think the "right" amount is the amount you have space for. Maximise the clothes storage you have for each person, fill it up in order of priority (most important / indispensable items first) and lose the rest. Do it in such a way that the wardrobe / drawer / whatever is full but not so full it's hard to get things in and out or to organise properly. Do the Marie Kondo thing of folding tops / trousers and storing them on their edges. You end up having less but feeling like you have more because you see and use everything you have and everything you have, you like / need.

About 5 or 6 million 😓

Millions...

I've got a plan in my head ( for my stuff ) to get rid of most of it and get a much smaller amount of clothes that all go together for a capsule wardrobe .
However to do this I want to diet down to a decent size ( I'm talking of dropping 2/ 3 sizes at least )
Trouble is it's a plan I've had for around 5 years , so I'm clearly failing!
To get rid of it all would be approx 6/8 bags .

4 or 5

mathanxiety · 26/08/2024 01:41

I'd say 6, though it depends on the size of the bin bags.

I have four bags of cold weather clothes ready to be donated, sitting in my kitchen right now. I still have plenty left.
