How many bin bags-worth of clothes do you have?

Baglady44 · 23/08/2024 20:12

I’m trying to massively declutter so we can move house.

I would love Stacey Solomon to hire a warehouse for us and do things that way but at the moment it’s just me!

I’ve realised that the big problem for everyone in the family is clothes. There are clothes EVERYWHERE

I’ve lost track of reality and I’m trying to gauge what is on the lower side of reasonable for us each to aim for.

If you put all the clothes you own (excluding coats and jackets) into bin bags how many do you think you would fill?

Dh is about 16 bags. I would say I am more like 7 or 8. Kids have about 12 between them I think (4 kids)

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 23/08/2024 20:53

2 (max) each for everyone in the family.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 23/08/2024 20:55

30 to 40

JumpstartMondays · 23/08/2024 20:58

Kids - 1 each (toddler and pre-schooler).
Me - 3
DH - about 12 (plus a giant storage box of his sentimental clothes in the loft).

GymClassHeroes · 23/08/2024 21:04

I know the kids have too many. I’m slightly addicted to vinted & buy lots for them from there. Dd has about 20 jumpers, ds has about the same.
I have a clear out every so often and start replacing for the next size up. It’s on my to do list next week before school starts😵‍💫

I’m not too bad. I regularly get rid of stuff & don’t like having too much choice. I purposely create a kind of capsule wardrobe each season. I could still probably fill 4 bags though.

Dhs clothes would probably fill 7 bags but he has lots of heavy overshirts and jumpers.

LemongrassLollipop · 23/08/2024 21:05

Kids 1 each so 2
DH 1
Me 10-12 😳. Having been attempting to declutter for years

Onedaynotyet · 23/08/2024 21:07

Maybe 3. 4 with coats and jackets.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/08/2024 21:11

About 30

I got rid of 18 full bags when I lost 5 stone

GreenTeaLikesMe · 23/08/2024 21:15

About 4, including everything like coats and shoes and winter stuff.

AgileGreenSeal · 23/08/2024 21:18

one.

Oldermum84 · 23/08/2024 21:18

Probably one, maybe two. Not having space to store them helps to keep it down!

Toasted · 23/08/2024 21:18

2 or 3 at most, but I’ve just cleared out probably 2 bags of clothes that no longer fit and that feels so good! Sold some and donated some

BiddyPop · 23/08/2024 21:25

Dd has just done a clear out and filled 2 bin bags for donation.

I am living between 2 houses - my main wardrobe here needs to be booted and suited, dealing much hotter summer and much colder winter than at home. Quite a few events so formal dresses for evenings. And some downtime stuff. While I still need some work clothes "back home", it's mostly casual stuff there. And I have still got my size 18 wardrobe from pre-Covid, but gone up another stone again here so needed a second size up. So I'm really not the person to ask. As I probably have about 20 bags not counting the shoes or coats.

Auburngal · 23/08/2024 21:26

I cannot say how many bin bags - loads.

In my bedroom I have 8 double drawers full of clothes, then wardrobe have two rails in a double door wardrobe and another small wardrobe with goes into the corner which houses work uniform and hoodies.

Then in the loft I have two large vac bags full of Xmas jumpers. Which I wear at work - keeping a couple back for wearing at home. Which I put in the drawer which houses my shorts and put those up there.

Then a drawer (bed side cabinet size) each of socks and undies.

Being ruthless with clothes. If I buy something, I take two items to the charity shop or bin if they are beyond wear.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 23/08/2024 21:32

I don’t know, probably more than I think.

I have the least clothes definitely. DH probably next. Then DS and finally DD has the most.

The kids are always getting hand me downs, plus I like a browse in charity shops for bigger sizes to have ready. They have far more than they need and I’m forever sifting through and handing stuff on.

MotherWol · 23/08/2024 21:39

Not a huge amount, I have spring/summer and autumn/winter capsules and the out of season stuff is packed away in a cabin sized suitcase (a regular one, not a super tiny one). Allowing for the stuff that I wear all year round (eg gym gear) I think I have 3 -4 cabin bags worth? At the end of the season I pack it away and weed out anything that doesn’t fit/has worn out or I just don’t get the use out of. I don’t like having lots of stuff.

exprecis · 23/08/2024 21:44

I think around 20 for me

I have a lot of formal wear for weddings and quite a few coats and swimwear and other seasonal items.. and then I hybrid work so I have office wear and also casual wear.

Gummybear23 · 23/08/2024 21:45

About 8 to 10.

Gummybear23 · 23/08/2024 21:45

Ok maybe 15

Baglady44 · 23/08/2024 21:55

The variations are interesting to see.

One or two bags of clothes is impressive! Is that in the UK? It must really simplify deciding what to wear.

OP posts:
elrider · 23/08/2024 21:57

Probably 2.5 each for me and DH including sports clothes, 1.5 for eldest (includes school uniform and sports/hobby clothes) and less than 1 for youngest.

Glitterybee · 23/08/2024 21:59

I’d say 3 or 4 for me, but you could fit what I actually wear into 1!

It would be more only I have the opposite problem of hoarding - I clear out constantly… It’s my way of de-stressing.

Watermelonsregularly · 23/08/2024 22:04

If counting big winter coats, I reckon 12. I swap out my winter and summer clothes.
In some ways seems obscene but on the other if you take into account, work stuff, home stuff, dressy stuff, stuff for exercise, wet suit etc makes sense.

eggandchip · 23/08/2024 22:06

I could put all my clothes in a large back pack.

exprecis · 23/08/2024 22:08

I am really interested by the people saying 1-2

I somehow have loads...

workout gear - for summer and winter

winter coats and waterproofs

summer holiday type wear - beach cover ups and swimming costumes, floaty dresses

formal wear for weddings

summer casual wear, winter casual wear

Summer officewear, winter office wear

Tights, slips, camis..

PJs, lounge wear

Just goes on and on..
