How many bin bags-worth of clothes do you have?

I’m trying to massively declutter so we can move house.

I would love Stacey Solomon to hire a warehouse for us and do things that way but at the moment it’s just me!

I’ve realised that the big problem for everyone in the family is clothes. There are clothes EVERYWHERE

I’ve lost track of reality and I’m trying to gauge what is on the lower side of reasonable for us each to aim for.

If you put all the clothes you own (excluding coats and jackets) into bin bags how many do you think you would fill?

Probably 30 to 40.

I need a clear out because I bet what I actually wear would fit into 3.

Isseywith3witchycats · 23/08/2024 22:10

Me 4 OH about ten hes the clothes hoarder in our house

FountainsOfPens · 23/08/2024 22:11
  1. Maybe even 15. Probably 15 with coats included.

Where do you keep it all?

domesticgodmess · 23/08/2024 22:13

Too many, at a guess 25 or 30 - I have 3 wardrobes then drawers and some clothes in the loft. DC also have a ridiculous amount (huge family, lots and lots of really lovely clothes gifted to us). DH is far from minimalist but I guess he is compared to the rest of us.

I have cleared a lot to the charity shop, would like to discover Vinted (for selling, not buying!)

heartsinvisiblefury · 23/08/2024 22:17

Me - 2

MotherWol · 23/08/2024 22:24

I am really interested by the people saying 1-2

I somehow have loads...

workout gear - for summer and winter

winter coats and waterproofs

summer holiday type wear - beach cover ups and swimming costumes, floaty dresses

formal wear for weddings

summer casual wear, winter casual wear

Summer officewear, winter office wear

Tights, slips, camis..

PJs, lounge wear

Just goes on and on..

For me, at least, I don’t need as much because I don’t do some of those things - don’t tend to go on foreign beach holidays so I’ve got swimwear but don’t need a week’s worth. Haven’t needed formal wear/wedding attire in years so don’t own any. Workout gear is all year round, so is office wear. Mostly it’s the same clothes, just with extra layers in winter!

Daisypopp88 · 23/08/2024 22:26

I got rid of 12 bin bags full recently to a charity shop and still could do with decluttering more! Need to stop buying clothes!

Notthatcatagain · 23/08/2024 22:29

6 or 7 not including shoes but don't ask me to measure the fabric stash waiting to be turned into clothes once I reach my target weight

InandOutlander · 23/08/2024 22:39

I suspect the 1-2 people don't realise how little. Fits into a binge bag. You'd not get more than maybe 5 outfits in one!

TheChosenTwo · 23/08/2024 22:44

Maybe 6? I’ve got a wardrobe and a half and 4 drawers.
Although I’m not including shoes and coats in that (because it would probably double).

Normallynumb · 23/08/2024 22:47

Probably 3 including coats and shoes

I must have far bigger bin bags than you! Ours are huge Costco sacks. Anyway I know I can get mine into 2 of our bin bags because I’ve done it very recently, when we had new fitted wardrobes.

It’s rather an ambiguous question in the first place though isn’t it? How big/strong are your binbags? What do you class as an outfit? What size are your clothes?

Dh just had a massive clear out at the weekend and donated about 80 T-shirts, 30 shirts and 20 pairs of jeans. Took up the space of 3 large sports bags.

i could fit way more than 5 of my dresses in a binbag but my clothes aren’t a very large size and aren’t all long/midi length with long sleeves - I would still consider them full outfits as I wouldn’t wear anything else with them.

aibutohavethisusername · 23/08/2024 22:49

Far too many

LimeFish · 23/08/2024 22:50

I'd say 7 including summer and winter clothes. DH probably 2. Kids 3

LimeFish · 23/08/2024 22:51

Actually DH 3 including winter jumpers as it"s MILs favourite Xmas present.

InandOutlander · 23/08/2024 22:52

Definitely depends on the bin bag size!! I current have 100 things on Vinted which are stored in 5 big storage bags in my spare room - I think it would be about 6 bin bags worth

Greengagesnfennel · 23/08/2024 23:11

About 3-4 for me.
1 for DH,
2 for DS (more based on enormous teen hoodies rather than number of items).
2 for DD.

based on big black binbags

angeldelite · 23/08/2024 23:20

I have a clothes hoarding issue so I’d say at least 70. Limited to spare room and attic. More in parents attic.

Peanutbuttercrumble · 23/08/2024 23:37

Me and DH have a matching wardrobe each with drawers at the bottom for underwear and DS has an ikea chest of drawers in his room. I have no idea how to measure in bin bags but we're in a 2 bed property so I don't have space for us all to have masses of clothes.

I declutter clothes by taking things to those big salvation army bins in the supermarket car park.

Barney16 · 24/08/2024 00:30

Too many. Somewhere between 15 and 20. Are you including coats? Because if you are I'm in 20+ territory. I love clothes. I keep saying I'm going to do a big clear out but keep putting it off.

Cobblersorchard · 24/08/2024 00:37

I would say it’s 3-4 for me. Most of that being pants. I seem to have far too many pairs.

I’m mid clear out of mine and DD’s as we speak. DD probably has 1 excluding school uniform of stuff she actually wears but I buy things ahead for her in sales as I see them,
so she has quite a lot that is in bigger sizes in a cupboard. I don’t think that counts though!

DH is a lost cause, he wears about half a bag worth but is clinging on to clothes I’ve not seen him wear since I met him. He must have 20 easily.

Wildywondrous · 24/08/2024 00:38

I can't picture how many bags I'd need but I have two double wardrobes and a large corner wardrobe plus 3 big drawers which I keep my trousers in.

Crystallizedring · 24/08/2024 00:39

We got rid of 20 bags of clothes when we moved house. So I'd say probably about 4 for me. 3 for DH, about 4 for each DD and 2 for DS.
I still think apart from DS we have too many clothes (DS probably does too but his clothes are small and don't take up much space).
