Bayesian tragedy over reported

AIBU to think that this tragedy is being vastly over reported simply because it involved very rich people? Why did it require live coverage or the effort to recover bodies on major news channels.

I agree OP. Yes, it's obviously very sad for the families but so many boats go down with migrants onboard off the coast of Sicily and those people are completely irrelevant apparently.

Interesting that the yacht owners co-defendant was also killed last week but i imagine a waterspout is hard to organise.

16 migrants have drowned in the channel this year, but nobody notices because a blow up dinghy isn’t a posh boat.

Everybody has noticed 🙄

Tragic though that is, an overloaded inflatable in the channel is much riskier than a mega yacht anchored in a harbour.

And that’s before taking into account either a truly bizarre coincidence or a conspiracy.

Sayingitstraight · 23/08/2024 18:30

It's no accident....

So I agree it's news worthy and will get more coverage because Mike Lynch was high profile. My point was whether it needed live coverage lasting hours of the efforts to recover bodies. I miss the old days I think when you took your news a midday, 6pm and 10pm with stories like this getting 5 minutes for human interest at the end of a 25 minute broadcast after dealing with war and politics.

It's not exactly comparable with the funny animal story they used to stick on at the end.People are interested and have compassion for human stories, they're still talking about the Titanic for example.
How old are you that you 'took' your news ?🥱

Silver777 · 23/08/2024 18:27

Who knows their names, ages, their relatives, how much they earned and every detail of their lives? The most coverage they’ll get will say “Three migrants drowned today in the Channel when their dinghy capsized”. That’s it. We don’t get hourly breaking news updates on the BBC for a week. There isn’t countless articles for days about the ins and outs of the situation. People will just say “That’s awful” to themselves and it’ll be forgotten.

Foul play is suspected. That's why.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/08/2024 18:47

It was big news. But it's been the lead story for days. Which is ridiculous.

malificent7 · 23/08/2024 18:48

Makes a change from people obsessing over the sinking of small boats in the channel.

On a more serious note, it is a sad story that has captured our interest. His poor wife and surviving dd.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/08/2024 17:31

Some of the victims are women.

According to the BBC TV News at 6 just now, if I remember correctly, after the tech entrepreneur and his daughter, the dead are {man’s name) (man’s job) and his wife (her name)(possibly her job, but I don’t think so)} x 2 or 3, and the boat’s chef (his name).

Online the men are still listed first.

I agree with previous posters who mention that this is August, and a slow news week/ month.

I do find it weird how his codefendant got killed on the same day in a different accident. Hmmm.

AyrshireTryer · 23/08/2024 18:51

Desperately over reported.
Agree with you OP.

BalloonSlayer · 23/08/2024 18:57

I thought it was perhaps reported so much because people hoped there could be an air pocket in the boat and maybe, just maybe, someone had survived. A bit like when the submarine looking at the Titanic disappeared, people were hoping it had got lost and would be found and the people saved although all the signs were always there that they had sadly perished. I think that until bodies are found people hope for a miracle and that keeps the story alive,

trippily · 23/08/2024 18:58

I agree.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/08/2024 19:01

The OP is quite right, I couldn't name one poor dead migrant refugee out of the hundreds that have died (including many tiny babies Sad) but I can name most of the boat of dead rich people

The poor are unnamed

sadabouti · 23/08/2024 19:03

@AugustDieSheMustTheAutumnWindsBlowChillyAndCold it's a different point you make / problem you spot, not unique to this story though. I'm not a follower of celebrity news but it always strikes me whenever I see stories about Louise Redknapp that she is always, and I mean always, described for explanatory purposes as a mother of two sons and ex-wife of Jamie Redknapp (ie defined principally and always subordinate to her relationship to three men irrespective of what she has done herself, is doing now, or may do in the future). Bit of thread derailer I guess and one for FWR.

localnotail · 23/08/2024 19:05

Ok, lets have a look.

Someone described as "English Bill Gates" who recently won a 12 years legal battle with Hewlett Packard dies while celebrating with his family and close friends. On a huge yacht that's described as "mega yacht" so obviously not some tiny dinghy, and the yacht went down in a space of a literal minutes. In a freak weather related accident that did not affect any other boats in the area. His wife is dead, and his daughter (I assume), as well as other people who were on the boat - not the crew, who mostly survived, but his rich friends. AND his co-defendant has recently been killed in some freaky jogging accident. AND another person connected with the trial also died (cant remember when or how).

Yep, everyday stuff, nothing to see here.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 23/08/2024 19:07

As a pp said, rich white men have more value than anyone else in this world though

Not all the victims were rich or white or men. For a time the BBC website was leading with an image of the Canadian-Antiguan chef, Recaldo Thomas.

And Mike Lynch, apparently, was one of the most important figures in British tech and as such his death is significant.

Nobody talks about the little girls in Southport anymore, I don't think it's because they don't care.

The BBC website is reporting on the funeral of one of the little girls currently.

People complaining about extended, 24/7 coverage of this or any other news story are presumably watching it round the clock, otherwise how would you know how much coverage it was getting? Why not just turn off?

Do you think there is a difference between reporting a death of, say, Freddie Mercury or, for example, Uncle Ted who lived next door? Both were lovely and adored by friends and family, but which one will get more interest in the press?

This is life, I'm afraid, and you will never be able to change this.
